MacGill recalled for fourth Orange Test
Australian Cricket Board - 22 December 2002

Australian Cricket Board (ACB) Chief Executive Officer James Sutherland today announced that the National Selection Panel (NSP) has chosen a 12-man squad for the fourth Orange Test match against England, beginning in Melbourne on 26 December.

The squad is:

Stephen Waugh (captain)
Adam Gilchrist (vice-captain)
Andrew Bichel
Jason Gillespie
Matthew Hayden
Justin Langer
Brett Lee
Darren Lehmann
Stuart MacGill
Damien Martyn
Glenn McGrath
Ricky Ponting

The squad shows just one change from the one that secured a record eighth successive Ashes series in Perth in early December, with New South Wales leg-spinner Stuart MacGill being recalled in place of injured fellow leg-spinner Shane Warne.

If MacGill plays it will be his first Test since taking 7-174 against South Africa in Sydney in January, although he was part of the Travelex tour of South Africa in February and March 2002.

The 31 year-old has an outstanding Test record with 82 wickets from 17 matches at an average of 25.01 and with a strike-rate of a wicket every 50.4 balls.

His record against England is equally impressive with 27 wickets in four Tests in the corresponding series four years ago. That made him the leading wicket-taker on either side, and the haul included his best innings (7-50) and match figures (12-107) in the final Test of the series in Sydney.

MacGill played county cricket for Nottinghamshire during the winter of 2002 and took 40 wickets from only six first-class matches at a strike-rate of a wicket every 34.1 deliveries.

This summer he has 20 wickets from six first-class matches for the New South Wales Blues.

Commenting on MacGill's recall, NSP Chairman Trevor Hohns said: "Stuart is the logical replacement for Shane Warne.

"He is a high-class performer with a big-match temperament, something that is shown by his figures in Test matches, and he has an outstanding record against England.

"We are delighted to be able to call on someone of his ability as we look to continue our good form in this series."

Australia leads the series 3-0 after victories in Brisbane (384 runs), Adelaide (innings and 51 runs) and Perth (innings and 48 runs).

Following the match in Melbourne, the final Orange Test of the summer will be played at Sydney (2 – 6 January 2003).

Tickets for the fourth Orange Test match are still available and can be purchased through Ticketmaster7 on 1300 13 61 22 or at www.ticketmaster7.com.au

The Test squad will assemble in Adelaide on Monday 23 December.

Good to see The Forgotten Man getting a recall. I hope he bags a ton and frightens the hell out of Nasser Hussain. :D

So let me get this straight, they decided not to give Hogg the chance of playing in the ODI today. What if he takes a 5 fa? They should have waited until after today's game.

MacGill hasn't exactly been setting the world on fire anyway and Cam White couldn't impress the selectors with 3 overs for the match at the SCG.

2 spinners in Sydney an option?

Rubbish. Hogg is in the one-day side for his batting and fielding as much as his bowling. Test cricket requires a real bowler.

As for Cameron White. He hasn't impressed anyone.

The logical decision has been made.

First of all Hogg has been in the Test side before as the number 1 spinner.

He's impressed me.

Logical - because he's from NSW?? Look at the table, top of the table and we can't have anyone in the Test side. Logical.

Perhaps that is why you are top of the table? Queensland have dominated the competition in recent times with Hayden being the only Test regular.

MacGill is a proven Test performer - logical. In 1996, Warne was injured for the one-off Test in India, we needed spinners so Peter McIntyre and Brad Hogg played (we were desperate!), thats the only test Hogg has played. And looking at the scorecard I would say Hogg was most definately the number two spinner that match.

Hogg and White are bit part players, which is fine for one-dayers but you need proper players for Test cricket. (although White could develop into a Test cricketer he still has a long way to go)

pfft, enough of these NSW conspiracy theories.

same could be said of collingwood and the all australian side

Ok, now I make it 1982/83, unless I've made another oversight

Wessels, Dyson, G Chappell, K Hughes, Hookes, Border, Marsh, Yardley, Lawson, Hogg, J Thomson

Hogg played 8 shield matches for South Australia that season. And we won't count Hookes as a Victorian either. :D

(edit)
I've just looked at the scorecard rather than just the names that appear in it... yes its *that* match.

Really? So that's why I had only read the news on the Internet and in the papers and that is why the selectors didn't contact me. I could have sworn my name was Brad Hogg and I was playing at the WACA today.

I suppose I better put my kit back down.

Please SMS Brad Hogg for me and give him my kindest regards on his first international in Australia.

Don't be disrespectful Hoggy. SMS's are impersonal.

Suzi can call, after all Brad Hogg IS her cousin.

You insensitive twerp.

well done Dave, very impressive. i found it hard to find info about when Hogg was playing for Vic, so i just assumed for those 2 years that he was a victorian. im not old enough to remember.

it's astonishing how many of those matches there is only 1 victorian in the side, they always manage to scrape a player through:

here are the victorians that have played in the melbourne test (surprisingly few admittedly)
2001: SK Warne
2000: CR Miller
1999: SK Warne, DW Fleming
1998: DW Fleming
1997: MTG Elliott, PR Reiffel, SK Warne
1996: PR Reiffel, SK Warne
1995: PR Reiffel, SK Warne
1994: SK Warne, DW Fleming
1993: SK Warne, PR Reiffel
1992: MG Hughes, SK Warne
-----------------------------------------
in the last decade, 6 representatives, of which there are 5 bowlers and only the one batsman
-----------------------------------------
1991: DM Jones, MG Hughes
1990: DM Jones, MG Hughes
1989: DM Jones, MG Hughes
1988: DM Jones, MG Hughes
1987: DM Jones, AIC Dodemaide
1986: DM Jones, MG Hughes
1985: RJ Bright, RM Hogg
1984: RM Hogg
1983: GN Yallop
1982: -
1981: - (v WI)
1981: - (v Pak)
1981: JD Higgs (v Ind)
1980: RM Hogg??, JD Higgs (v NZ)
1980: - (v Eng)

Back to McGill - [other poeple are "Hogging" the limelight!!] - so do people think he is our 2nd best test spinner or not??

I say Yes!

In fact not sure if this has been said before - he was the last Aussie to take 5 wickets in each inings v England.

agree with you dezzmo, sometimes i even wonder if he is our best spinner, just never gets a chance (for understandable reasons though)

Hmm - No Warnie is the greatest!! - BUT McGill given enough opportunities could have been very close behind!
