"THE SUBSTITUTE will be removed and the interchange cap reduced from 120 to 90 rotations per game in 2016 under changes announced to clubs on Thursday.

The game will return to four interchange players with clubs allowed to also make changes at quarter breaks.

Forced changes such as the blood rule, concussion assessment and stretcher changes will not be counted as part of the rotations."

Be interesting to see how it goes and if it leads to more injuries (hammies etc.).

Might change how the season plays out also. Players will be knackered by the end of the season if the coaches don't back off the work load during games or training.

We've been very close to the cap all year. I think we all wanted the sub rule gone but not sure the reduction in interchanges is good news for Freo. We'll most likely adapt but it could also have a negative effect on our team.

Slow contested plodders that run all day are back in fashion.

If the AFL think this will create more flashy plays I think they might be disappointed.

Or;
AFL coaches decide to allow oppositions to have unmanned space.

Barlow and mz should have good years next year then?

Absolutely, so should Wingard and Gray because they can impact forward as well as in the middle.

I expect we will see an extra forward turn fwd/mid

So no more Kermit suit hey? Nice deflection AFL. :thumbsu:

Will be interesting to see how this affects our approach next year and beyond. Would expect it to affect the kamikaze game styles a la Port Adelaide 2014, Doggies, West Coast and Adelaide this year just as much as affect our "manic pressure", which we seem to have eased off on this year anyway.

I'm interested in how it impacts playing young players in teams that aren't in 'rebuilding' mode. I suspect first year players like our Blakley and Weller are going to struggle to get into games of any significance. If you play a player who can't run out a full AFL game with solid time on ground, you're handing a bit of advantage to the opposition. Couple that with the impact an injury can have on a team - the risk of playing very young players is hightened.

I'm sort of glad that the sub rule is going, but I'm not overjoyed about it. We'll still have something to complain about when we don't see an exciting 1st year player get a game at all, or a close game is impacted because we pick up an unlucky injury early.

Less interchanges= slower game.

This should help the older players I imagine.

The sub was good in keeping things more balanced if a team had a player going down early with an injury but was kind of annoying as a fan waiting for a player to get a go if that makes any sense.

What about for the players, you grow up wanting to be an AFL player, all the hard work and then the dream day of hearing your name called out come draft day....

And then your first 5 games end up being, 10minutes, a quarter, 15minutes, a quarter and a bit and the first half of your fifth game.

Which means you can't out sprint the opposition when they have an injury, hence removing the argument for the sub

Just means you wont see the player kicking a goal and running straight off finally!

If tabs can sort his hands out - he will thrive in this new rule change and dare I say become elite
