Just read that Suma kicked 111 goals and 89 behinds in 1991:eek: I was only 6 years old at the time so I dont remember the season, actually my first memory of watching footy was the 1991 grand final with my cousin who was a few years older than me. The eagles lost and I couldnt understand why he went and ripped down all his posters and put up hawks posters. He later told me that the eagles broke his heart and he couldnt bare to look at all his eagles stuff. I finally understood what he meant in 05, although I didnt chuck a tanty and put up swans posters but anyway.

Does anyone on here remember 91 and could suma have kicked 150 plus, he must have dominated!

At the risk of appearing like an old fart :p the midfield and half back lines were dominant. I don't remember thinking that he could've kicked 150, he had Heady, Evans, White, Pyke, Lewis, Wilson to take goals off him. This was the year they won 11/13?? in a row, but you somehow knew that coming up against the Hawks in the GF we would be rolled. Great GF at Waverley though, I enjoyed it. :thumbsu::thumbsu:

I well and truly remember those early 90's sides. I tremble at the thought of what Suma's career total could have been if he'd managed the massive hook he generated on his kicks. Perhaps the greatest thing I remember about Suma was how damn quick he was to accelerate off the mark.

Super footballer.

And now Buddy has much the same problem with pretty much the exact same results.

1991 I was 7, and remember the family gathering in the lounge room for the grandy. In the last quarter me, mum and my brother went for a walk around the block crying. Was like a family member died. My dad went out the back afterwards and hit a gas pipe digging something up, so couldnt go near the house for a couple of days. I remember Sumich well.

1994 I remember well. We won, then the old man took me to the newly opended Galleria Morley!

Wouldn't have kicked 150. I always thought a 135-140 tally would have been his limit that year.

Suma wasn't a "mark 30m in front and miss kind of guy". Well, he was, but he's also have plenty of shots from outside 50 or on acute angles.

I think it was 11, then Carlton of all sides stopped the run at Princes Park the buggers.
I was 11 that year, and it wasn't a case of if we would win most games it was by how much. We gave some sides a good pasting back then.

Yeah, remember it well we were just bloody good, even the pricktorian flogs had to admit it. Suma was more frustrating to watch than Lynch or Kennedy, but he was responsible for 2 flags.

Sumich was insanely good with freak snaps. He could do massive snaps around the body from 50 out, yet would miss some sitters.

I remember more of his 1992 than his 1991, and he put in some massive efforts that year which helped us to the flag.

Got a few memories of Suma in 91 as a young kid.

Did he change jumpers after each quarter in the GF? Short sleeves to long?

I remember him being on 13 at 3 quarter time, listening to the fourth quarter urging him on for more.

Remember crying after we lost to north, listening on the radio.

Like many astute commentators, I referred to him as Peter 'suridge'-pipe (actually meaning sewage).

Of course I remember the famous banner in the crowd: 'Suma Magic'. Wish there was a photo of it.

I remember around '03/04, McDougall kicked 3 or 4 goals at the GABBA. When asked if he impressed with the effort, Suma responded that in his day he wouldn't be receiving praise for 3/4 goals, that it was expected.

Was maligned and judged way too harshly by Eagles fans, as he said it was just expected he kick 3/4 a game and little appreciation when he did.

A story to show you how fickle the fans were:
Remember in his last year with the club we were playing the Hawks I think it was on a Sat night and still being young and underage had been dragged to my aunt's place for a dinner party. As the game way delayed on TV we heard the live scores on the radio and Sumich went nuts that night and kicked a bag so we knew what the score was before we arrived at my Aunt's place. Anyway there was this couple, both expressed themselves as diehard Eagles fans but both said how they hated Sumich with a passion and wanted him out of the team. So me and my dad exchanged knowing looks and waited for the delayed telecast of the game to begin on TV to see what would unfold next. Soon as the game starts they started heckling Sumich, but sure enough as soon as he was kicking goals again they started cheering him everytime he got near the ball (He kicked 7 for the game). Was a good social experiment and shows just how quickly he could polarize our fans back, sometimes in the same game.

Sumich was a more traditional/leading full forward. I think that he would have struggled in most other positions.

There was certainly a lot more room in the forward line in those days. Man, he could kick the footy a mile. He had the raking left foot, with a nice draw left to right. He was a star, but he was able to frustrate the fans because he simply missed too many shots for goal that we thought he should he could have converted.

He'd miss a 25 metre dead in front shot lucky to kick a point yet kick it from the boundary 50 metres out splitting the middle the very next shot. One of my all time favourite Eagles.

Super player with freakish ability. Booming kick as well.
Under rated in a period with some dominant full fowards.

Suma was my favourite player of the early 90's. He was an absolute star. I remember when he kicked 12 or 14 against Essendon at the MCG. My brother was at the game and rang me to say the Bombers supporters were chanting "Sumich is a W..ker" and he pointed out that Suma had in fact kicked more than the entire Essendon team!
I also remember the Subi crowd chanting "Suma, Suma". Made the hairs on the neck stand up.
I feel sad that he is now down the road with the hapless purple pretenders.

He was my Favourite player. Probably still my favourite Eagle to watch.

He dominated 1991 - Could have kicked anything really.

Wish I was old enough at the time to go to Melbourne/Perth and see more of him.

My first ever Eagles game was in 1991 v Adelaide @ Football Park and I just remember seeing the blue and gold and that big no.4 in the goal square and was like "**** yeah!!"

That 13 goals v Footscray (In the wet mind you) was sensational! As was his 12.8 v Essendon at the MCG the following year. (12 goals 8 FFS hahaha - LEGEND!)

Agree on the freakish snaps he could kick and his helicopter style helped when he had shots from crazy angles.

*we wont mention the Collingwood final in 1990 but at least he probably saved Essendon winning another flag hehe*

I wouldn't say the same results. Sumich kicked 111 goals in 1991 (to go with his 89 behinds).

Buddy will be lucky to kick 65 this year.

Hardly a fair comparison. The game has changed so much over the years.

65 this year would probably be the equivalent of 90 those days.

In 2008 Buddy kicked 113.88 Almost identical to his idol Suma. (Except he won the Coleman and they won the GF )
