The time has come here in hell to restart a tradition that has been culturally significant to generations of Australia's who had nothing but free to air television, Sunday night at the movies.

The premise: Each Sunday a poster who wants to be part of this will be selected on a rotational basis to select a movie for us to watch. We have a week to watch the movie if and when we can and discuss it in this thread. Preferably we would select a movie that is available on the free to air streaming services such as SBS on Demand, 7 Plus and so on. As most have Netflix or Prime so this is also an option.

There is no obligation, just an opportunity to perhaps have movies suggested to you you might never watch otherwise and do likewise for others. Also the opportunity to discuss the movie and you opinions on it. Anyone welcome to jump in at any time.

I enjoyed the covenant for the message it was trying to send. Great wide angle cinematography and some good reversed tight in shots that help give the idea of suspense.

It deliberately dialled the relationship between a US soldier and an interpreter up to 1000.

Will leave it at that so I don’t spoil.

Just finished the Covenant. Thought it was going to be some low rent no effort streaming movie. I was wrong. Well worth the watch. Thanks Mrs Crim.
I really like the movie, but I think they pushed the envelope as far as it could possibly go to make the point about the interpreters treatment for their service.

On the covenant I think that was a good movie but would have preferred if they used a real but less fantastical story of the work they did.

The way the US abandoned these people and the whole country stinks of Vietnam only with more extreme consequences for those who defied the Taliban.

Sorry I’ve had a tough week personally. Wasn’t able to watch this one.
Hope all is good mate and next week is a little brighter.

I probably have more negative things to say about this film than I do positive. The plot/story was very Hollywood. Two hyper-competent protagonists against the odds. I found much of it to be fantastical and hard to believe, especially in the final action movement.

The score throughout the film was heavy handed. As though the music was telling me what emotion I should be experiencing during a scene instead of the music enhancing that emotion. When Guy Ritchie makes a "Guy Ritchie" film, the music is always on point. So I am surprised that he missed the mark so much here.

Watched this one with Mrs Jatz. Enjoyed it although I suspect when someone asks me if I've seen it in a couple of years, I'll remember absolutely nothing about it.

Some fun cameos (Bjorn from Vikings, Homelander from The Boys) added to the experience for me.

Don't think it's one of Guy Ritchie's best by any stretch but an entertaining enough 2 hours.

Some quick thoughts on direction/cinematography. I think this film had nearly every war movie cliche shot in it.
  • Rotating helicopter blades in slow motion.
  • Overhead of soldier being carried on a stretcher.
  • Zoom in on sniper taking a shot.
  • Air support providing covering fire from the gunners point of view.
  • Montages.
I am sure there are others that I am not thinking of

None of it was done poorly (with the exception of the montages that I really did not like) but I have seen these shots before multiple times and as a result the film is a bit bland and forgetful.

Crimson Azure I will make my selection tomorrow evening some time. Or should I allow more time for discussion of the current film?
Great, looking forward to it mate.

Do you have a genre in mind?

Breathless (1960)

Available on SBS On Demand

A small-time thief steals a car and impulsively murders a motorcycle policeman. Wanted by the authorities, he attempts to persuade a girl to run away to Italy with him.

Directed by Jean-Luc Godard and based on a story by Francois Truffaut, Breathless is one of the most influential films of the "French New Wave"

What an interesting flick.

It’s just so different to what I’d normally watch. Wouldn’t say I loved it per se but I have no regrets having seen it. Just put together so differently to how we see movies now (or even 70’s onwards really).

Read that no one was credited on this film, found that to be interesting.

Also read up on Jean Seberg (the actor that played Patricia). Seeing the FBI caused her early demise was something I definitely wasn’t expecting to see!

That’s a great pick omit and I’d not heard of it. I watched it yesterday and it still had me thinking today!

I’ve got to go to a dinner now with family visiting but I’ll return tomorrow. I’d like to watch again this week sometime, lots of nuance that I’ve missed first time around.
