Why should adelaide be penalised for doing first free live trading of pick swaps with Carlton. That’s not fair and makes a mockery of live trading. End of story sorry but that’s my thoughts.

Yup it sucks for Adelaide.

Rory Sloan would be perfect for Gold Coast. 30 next season. I’m sure Gold Coast would be happy to trade their pick 15 for him.

Solves both problems.

Gold Coast get an experienced leader on the field.

Adelaide get another first round pick to speed up their rebuild, and pick 2 doesn’t get pushed back by a priority pick.

No one is saying high draft picks don't have value - but that clubs that get themselves into a position to qualify for them have had no shortage of high draft picks, having been crap for multiple years in a row. They self-evidently aren't the answer for those clubs, or those clubs wouldn't be in that position in the first place. Thus, the issue lies elsewhere.

Every club is out for themselves first, the rest of the competition well down the list.

There is no such thing as a level playing field in the AFL, and there never will be.

Some clubs have baked in advantages that are not going away any time soon. They should use those advantages wherever possible to attract players from other clubs and increase the cash available to the club to spend on whatever they want. And they do.

The AFL has rules already in place to help with equalisation, mainly because it is not a level playing field and never will be.

The whole point of equalisation is to take opportunities and resources from better clubs and give them to weaker clubs.

If you are a club without any baked in advantages, then you have to go to work on the AFL and the Commission to get extra equalisation measures. You have to go and ask.

The Suns don't have any baked in advantages yet.

Until we do, we are going to keep on hassling the AFL and Commission for extra help. At the moment that is pick 1, next year it might be fixturing and not having to go to Perth twice a year.

Brisbane had a full footy department overhaul, and didn't receive an early PP.

You're arguing against a strawman of your own creation here anyway. No one has said extra high picks don't have value. However, they come at a cost, diminishing the draft stocks of other clubs, most of all other poor clubs, introducing moral hazard through incentives to lose, and with less impact than they might otherwise have because the clubs receiving them have a track record of squandering elite youngsters.

If early PPs exist within your narrowly framed conception of them as an aid to garbage clubs, then obviously the two most garbage clubs would be the prime candidates. But they haven't existed in that form for a decade now, and for good reason - they cost more than they delivered.

I would rather give these clubs more home games rather than priority picks ..
Give GCS the first 12 games at home then revert to a regular Home and Away format ..
Do this for 3 or 4 yrs as I think it could possibly retain young
players and attract a few veterans to prolong their careers ..

Which seems absolutely bizarre really. Let’s put a bunch of 18 year olds on the Gold Coast with Gary Ablett with stuff all welfare support and see what happens. It kind of puts the prayer group thing we heard about into perspective though... if there aren’t any other resources available then it makes sense for the players to rely on each other more (in the end not necessarily for the best).

Temporary cap concessions is all I can think of to get a critical mass of decent players to the club. Give them the opportunity to offer half a dozen free agents double their normal contract worth. The clubs they leave get free agency comp picks. Maybe grant free agency status to those players before their required time or even if they're contracted so long as the compensation pick reflects this. Maybe cap at 1 player per club.

It's not fair on the clubs losing players, but I'm not sure what other solution would work

Keys for the short and long term success are development, retention and injury prevention although the same could be said of most sides but the amount of top end talent on the list is good it is just inexperienced and I think the ideal situation for the Suns would be keep the 1st pick for a midfield gun and try to trade the lions pick they hold for a mid age best 22 player with 100 + games to add some leadership to the club
They have the depth players like Miles/GHS to run around in the reserves and if the AFL give them 2 extra list spots and an increase in SC soft cap to spend more on development and injury prevention/recovery they will be ready for season 2021

Think Brown hit it on the head with hard ovals , I have seen people at Broadie break their hands taken catches in cricket when they hit the ground , numerous broken collarbones after being forced to the ground in tackles and so many soft tissue injuries in coast footy. Water down the grounds

Water is very expensive up here.

My suggestion;

For the next 5 years;

• give them an increased salary allowance for senior players in the capacity of on-field coaches. Something like; any player over the age of 27 years is eligible for an on-field coach allowance of 1) a fixed amount per game OR 2) a 20% loading on their match payment. No limit on the number of players in this category. Players must be enrolled in the AFL coaching program.
• give them an additional 2 list positions for senior players over the age of 27 years with a minimum 100 games of AFL.

I think they need on field leadership, not more young players.

The Lachie Weller deal is the sort of thing they should be doing. get some experienced players around. Why they traded Lyons is beyond me!
Hugh Greenwood should be on their radar, plus a few others who would be best 22 (not Miles, Murdoch types). I'm sure Port are shopping Ryder off to them, but they don't need another ruck, especially one who has proven he is no good playing in a position other than ruck

I disagree with that. The wrong 18 year old won't solve their problem. The likes of Bontempelli and Macrae led the club to a premiership. Get more kids with leadership qualities and you'll see the club turn around in no time. Rowell and Anderson are as good as you could ask for in this situation.

Leadership qualities are not limited to picks 1 and 2. This draft they could trade down pick 1 and end up with Robertson and Gould who will give them great leadership as well as quality.

Drafting for leadership is a decision you can make at any stage of the draft, and I agree it should be a focus for them, but the higher the pick the more likely it is a club prefers to select based on football talent.

Pick should be getting you one of the best best 3 players from an oppositions list, who is in that 24 to26 age bracket. I don't see clubs lining up to hand over such players to the Suns.

Who is Adelaides best player in that age bracket? Matt Crouch maybe. And he's not worth pick 1 by himself. Maybe both Crouch brothers together are worth pick 1. Gives you pick 1 and 2 in the draft to start your rebuild proper.

Rory Sloane would be a good get for the Suns. He's still got a few years left in him, and is that gun experienced player. He's probably worth that other first round pick the Suns currently have, pick 16, with some change going back the Suns way as well.
