The SUNS will open the 2024 Sir Doug Nicholls Round with TIO Stadium to host the round’s opening fixture for the first time. Gold Coast will wear its Darwin/Larrakia Indigenous Guernsey, designed by Larrakia artist Trent Lee, which was also worn in last Saturday’s match against North Melbourne.

Three Indigenous players will take the field for the SUNS tonight - Joel Jeffrey (Wulwulam/Kukatj), Ben Long (Anmatjerre) and Lloyd Johnston (Garrawa/Yanyula).

An official Welcome to Country featuring the Youth Mill Performing Arts Company and Larrakia People Edwin Fejo and Liam Stansfield will take place pre-match with both sides also to exchange gifts before the opening bounce.

Gold Coast SUNS Game Facts
  • The Gold Coast SUNS have played seven matches at TIO Stadium in its history, winning its last five games by an average of 46 points.
  • Gold Coast’s 68-point win over North Melbourne in Round 9 is the third-largest winning margin at TIO Stadium in AFL history.
  • The SUNS won the last meeting between the two teams by 19 points in Round 3, 2023. The two sides have never previously met at TIO Stadium.
  • Three Northern Territory products have been named in the SUNS team to face Geelong - Ben Long (St Mary’s), Joel Jeffrey (Wanderers) and Lloyd Johnston (Wanderers).
  • Vice-captain Sam Collins will play his 100th club game at the Gold Coast SUNS. It will be Collins’ 114th career match in total.
  • Jack Lukosius holds the record for most goals kicked in a match at TIO Stadium (5), which he has achieved twice. He holds that record alongside Jack Darling, Paul Stewart, Brendan Fevola, Brad Johnson and SUNS Assistant Coach Brad Miller.
  • Only Brad Johnson (17 goals) has kicked more career goals at TIO Stadium than Jack Lukosius (10 goals). Ben King is also equal-fourth for most goals at the venue (8).

MASSIVE game for the Suns. A win would secure a third consecutive DarWIN Double and more importantly a spot in the top 8.

No Dangerfield. No Hawkins. No Cameron. We're not going to get a much better chance to take down a top 2 side than this game and all eyes will be watching as it's a prime time slot on Thursday night. The humid conditions should favour us but Geelong are a class outfit (even with outs) so I'm expecting it to require our very best to get the job done in this one. My only concern at this point in time is our five day break hurting us late in the game, but I still think we're a good chance.

Suns by 10 points. Let's go!

Suns midfield should slaughter us if they're serious this year.
Hardwick usually sets up his team well against Geelong. Key to the game will be Tom Stewart. Did not like the attention he received and for the first time in his career, was retaliating and lost all focus.

If Bruhn and Conway are in, it will go a long way to keeping us in this. Stanley is in terrible form. 20 hitouts, 1 mark, 2 clearances and 7 touches is not going to cut it against Witts or Moyle.

Suns by 14 points.

Honestly reckon most will write the Cats off with Hawkins, Jez and Danger out.

There's plenty of opportunity with Conway, Bruhn, Bowes, Neale and potentially Mannagh all in.
A young, quick Cats could be wild in variance but could also give Suns a massive shock.

Especially as Suns are coming off 5 day break. This game could be anything

Didn't he bust his ankle?
Watched the game and it looked like a serious injury.

He was named emergency for AFL game, by the sounds of it he was all good.

Well that changes things because Hawkins looks completely devoid of confidence and will need another big body to help draw away defenders. Helps the small forwards too who can do a bit of crumbing.
Maybe Ollie Henry will miss as I would prefer a 203cm tall to compete in the air given Collins, Ballard, Andrew and Lukosius are all over 6ft'4.

Cats missing the big fellas up front could just be the opening the Suns need. Gunna be a little hot and humid on Thursday too. Suns by 8.

If the Suns get within 4 goals I’ll be impressed. Backing up in 5 days in those conditions again is going to be a massive effort, with a number of younger players going down with bad cramp already after the first game. Will be a fair few outs you’d think.

Not to mention the Sun’s inability to show up against top opposition, in prime time, or when they have something to play for, all of which are relevant here. Geelong should get up pretty easy even with Cameron out (can’t imagine current Hawkins would have much of an impact in these conditions anyway).

What would you prefer?

A 5 day break with no travel coming off a game in tough conditions that was over by 3/4 time.

Or a 6 day break after a really tough match played in 10 degrees and having to fly 5 hours and acclimatise to 30 degrees for the second match?

Massive question marks over how both teams handle the different challenges they face. I wouldn't be surprised if either team is a long way off it.

Fair point. Geelong won't be the freshest going into this game either and will have to deal with a long flight a day or two beforehand. It's like when the tennis players head to Australia in late December because they know the longer they spend here acclimatising, the better it will serve them at the Australian Open when it starts in mid-January because the heat is a real factor.

Both teams are facing separate challenges in this game and the Suns' biggest challenge may actually be the bright lights of a nationally televised game. It's not something our club tends to handle very well historically.

Only concern for the Suns is the manner in which Geelong came storming back against a genuine finalist in the second half. If they bring that in the opening quarter, they should get out to an early lead and they will then be hard to peg back.

Seems weird it's in Darwin. No issue to us. Probably an advantage if anything rather than a ground the Suns play at more. Are GC fans happy with it? I'd be pissed off.
They have been playing home games there for three years now and are 5-0 so far. Not sure how it is an advantage for Geelong. Ball is like a bar of soap up there.

Key for us is attitude.

Yes clearly there were other things that hurt us against Port, and Melbourne for that matter, but I’ve never seen us look so disinterested in doing the basics at the start of a game like we did last week. You can’t necessarily overcome the deficiencies in skill level in a midfield just with attitude but you can close the gap and that’s what we had been doing for seven weeks. We didn’t look anything like that with our approach for the first 40 minutes last week, it was dogshit. Cannot do that on Thursday
