I can't honestly say I ever imagined Ted being so damn important to our defence but he was a rock yesterday and he's definitely picked up where he left off in 2010.

It's just one game this season and you can't get too carried away, but if he can seriously maintain this form then the loss of Bolton wont be felt nearly as much as we expected. He plays smart and his defensive nouse certainly appears to be 2nd to none when he's on song, not to mention his courage.

He's had me shaking my head in disappointment (sometimes tossing my Sydney stubby holder at the TV) on numerous occasions since coming to Sydney but it really feels like he turned a corner last year and is continuing on with it.

It may be very early days in 2011 and I don't want to jinx him, but I can see him being one of our most important players and even more important if we don't get Tadhg or LRT back soon.

Dont underestimate the effects that serious knock would have had on him, it can take time to get right again, its a credit to him the way 'SuperTed' has comeback.

Super Ted was putting in great performances in the back end of 2009 until he went down in rnd 22. It was just extremely unfortunate timing for the guy cause we had a whole bunch of new recruits over the 09 off season, he was on the back foot coming into 2010, he had a slow start due to the disruption caused by the injury, but to his credit, he worked at it and has held his spot ever since.

I'm really proud of how he's gone about it and his determination to get to the point he's at. Granted injuries helped his cause. But he had everything going against him, his form up until 09 had been inconsistent, and he'd been frustrating at times. He didn't have a set role/position, suffered a serious injury at an inopportune time. And on top of that the Swans had their greatest recruitment period under Roos. A mentally weak person would've fell away, it wouldn't have been easy to come back with the same courage that saw him out in the first place, but he not only overcame the mental aspect, but has continued where he left of in terms of his development.

Make no mistake about it, what we saw from Richards in round 1 is what we'll get from him week in week out. He's a champ.

Plod Grundy is hopefully in trouble when LRT gets back to full fitness. Ted is far more versatile and adaptable than Plod. The only thing that makes Plod look good is his stats - he stays back and gets the easy uncontested possessions when we rebound (and opponents have already started flooding). But he nearly stuffs them up with slow hands and unreliable kicking.

Are you seriously suggesting Grundy's spot could be in doubt? That is the single most ridiculous thing I've read on this board this year.
 
If LRT came back, I'd prefer Grundy to make way over Richards as of this moment. His fumbles cost us too much for my liking. Hopefully it is just a confidence issue and he gets over it soon. But if not...

Ted's spot is the one more in question.

If he plays like this every week it wont be, we know he can achieve this standard but for a big part of the last couple of years it has been absent.

In fact the good news is with Richards doing this the pressure to rush LRT back before he is right for this level of football is off.
 
Grundy won't be making way for anyone. He's copping a bit too much criticism on here IMO. Probably because he's made a few more mistakes in the last 2 seniors games (EF vs Dogs and on Sunday) than we usually see from him. Against Hall he was just beaten by a better forward on the night and good delivery by the Dogs midfield and on Sunday he was fine defensively but made a few bad decisions (or was too slow to make a decision).

Grundy is still our best defender and will be back to his best this year, I have no doubt. Give him a break.
 
Holy shit. Are people really turning on Grundy on the basis of one game? **** me, is this the Richmond board?

HardenUp - I realise you've been sticking the boots into Grundy for a while. I'm just alarmed to see people joining you on the lunatic fringe.
 
Totally agree with OP. I haven't been Ted's biggest fan since he's been at the Swans, but right now he's in the best form of his career IMO and is our most vital player down back. Should be picked every week, no questions asked.

youre kidding arent you? he is staying back getting cheap possies when we rebound? would you prefer he just leaves it? he reads it well.
 
If anyones position in defence would be vunerable due to last weeks games it would have to be Rohan so even if LRT came back in the next few weeks I feel Rohan would make way and be used elsewhere or in a different role.

He wasn't quite up to the job as a defender but will get better but it's a cut throat game and they can't afford to groom as easily as say Richmond who would settle for x amount of wins where as surely the Swans have their eyes on winning enough for finals which means getting your best team out on the paddock not running youth policies.

Ted was fantastic against a very dangerous opponent and the way he backed into that Melbourne dog who decided to give him some forearm candy to the back of the head was a timely reminder of his natural gutsy instinct. Paul Kelly was the model but there have been some really good goers when it's time to put there body on the line they will without question, B Kirk, J Bolton, T Richards, W Chapman, P Bevan ...Not talking about skill but guys you can guarantee when it's their time to go they will go without hesitation can't help but love those kind of players and Ted has proven he is one of those.

Ted love from Sunday for sure hope he has a blinder of a season.

One of the great things about Ted is that when he arrived at the club he was nowhere like as tough and fearless as he is now. I would never accuse any AFL player of being soft, but he was prone to hold back from contests at times. By the end of his first season he had well and truly learned to play footy the Bloods way.

One of my enduring memories of his will be his final quarter in the 2006 GF. Yes, he made a couple of skill errors but he literally ran himself into the ground and could barely hold his feet by the end.
 
he was sensational in the 2006 GF, and brilliant on the weekend. I still get nervous when he gets the ball and has to make a quick decision but that goes for a lot of our defenders. Everitt and Rohan would both make way before Ted or Reg. Both have a big job coming up. Essendons forwards are a lot bigger than Melbourne's mosquitoes.
 
Always loved Ted's guts and determination (comparison with Chapman is a huge compliment). It seems he's taken his skills to a new level and appears to be in career best form. Against his old side I hope he has another blinder.

Great when someone steps up to fill a hole. I noted in another post that Everitt, Mattner & Ted played very good games on the weekend when there was some mighty quick ball coming in and we really needed good games from all of them. Pressure for spots seems to be a key factor and players are grabbing their chances when they can. Despite the heroics of Super Ted it was Everitt's game which pleased me the most on the weekend. He was a risk but he's shaping to be another discount star under the Bloods recycling influence. Loved his confidence to go forward for a freakish goal. Unless Vez turns superstar we appear to have won that trade.

I admit Grundy had an awkward start with a few fumbles but his track record says he'll click. Don't forget how he stepped up last year when LRT & Craig went down.

That said, having Tadgh & LRT back will be a huge boost.
 
I didn't see what he did that was so good, but I remember I saw the AFL.com.au match review article and it listed him as the Swans "Best" so he must have been good. I just didn't notice it. I only really noticed his mistakes.

He started so good when he came to the Swans but 2010 was terrible for him. He came back from that injury he got from Fevola I believe and he hardly had a good game. But if he can return to that 2007/8 form, I'll be happy.

I reallllllyyyyy do not like having Grundy as our only stopper. I am dying for LRT to come back and Everitt and Spangher to lift.

??? The back half of his season, when he came in to replace LRT, was really good. He was ordinary at the start of the year, but totally solid during that run up to finals.
 
Would be nice if Ted could be our Craig Bolton replacement capable of playing on talls and smalls

Certainly has the pace size and athleticism to take on that role
