In the beginning of 2010 I bought a Freo flag and flag pole, but never got around to putting it up. Later on in the year, I bought a framed team poster. The day I put it up Barlow broke his leg. Ever since then I have always worried about putting up my Freo memorabilia.:(

When I put my team poster and signed jumper up this year, Pav got suspended.:(

I so want to put up the flag in celebration of this year, but I am so worried it might jinx the team just when it may all come together.

Stupidity or valid fear?

So, the past two finals against Geelong I have watched at my boyfriend's house with our Geelong-supporting mate present. Both times I've been the one to organise a small BBQ and get together at his place. Both times, I have bought the same blue cheese to have before the game. Fair to say I should be doing this for the rest of our games this season?

Well mate, for what it is worth, after I moved over here 15 odd years ago, I started going to Freo away games fully realising that it might be a slightly tougher gig being an East Coast fan. After twelve straight losses I changed the Freo jumper I was wearing to our live games to a newer version. We got closer but still didn't win.

After twenty-two straight losses live, I went for new game day socks and another new jumper. And I wore the socks inside out. We got within 1 point. But still lost.

By consecutive live loss #33, some 8 years since I had seen us win live, my "mates" were telling me to stay at home as we had more chance of winning when I wasn't around. So I started sitting by myself in amongst opposition fans every game Freo played over here. We kept losing...

When I didn't go, we won half the time. When I went, we lost 100% of the time. No matter what superstitious behaviours or mantras I engaged in.

Then, we went to the SCG in 2010. And we won. After 43 straight live losses, I finally got to see us win. Even though the SCG didn't play our song after the siren, it was still a bloody good feeling. As I watched the boys run to the cheer squad, I looked around and tried to find the special place I'd sat, the meal I'd eaten, or the special talismanic clothes I'd worn, that had made the day.

Then I realised...

While I deeply loved my team, it wasn't then, or ever, about me, or what I wore, where I sat, or what I chanted. It was about the players. And we finally had enough good ones playing well enough, long enough, to win away from Perth regularly. No matter what I did or didn't do, say or wear.

Hard as it is to say, it doesn't ever come down to superstitious things - just how well our players perform on the day.

Ultimately, we aren't the drivers, we are just along for the ride...

My son was born in the same day as that Sydney game. The wife and I watched the entire game and then he was born 20 minutes after the game finished. Great day that.

There is nothing you can do that would affect the result of the game, but just bloody well step away from the flag!!

Everything changed this year. I used to wear the lucky scarf and use the Freo mug and if we got in front I'd be afraid to move around at all but now I agree with BIPG. The boys just get it done. I was completely calm for the Geelong game (until Hill kicked that goal, then I went mental).

Should I mention that the team has never won an away game that I've been at and I have guaranteed grand final tickets?

It's okay, I haven't been to a loss this year (was at the Wildcats for our Essendon loss) so I'll be there to balance you out!

Funny this is brought up. My company had a policy that we had to change our password every 3 months. Somehow I decided to make it footy related so its easy to remember.

Earlier this year I changed my password to something suggesting how awesome Pav is....bam, he got the foot injury and is out for 4 weeks (yeah right).

This of course is loads of rubbish, but not wanting to risk the health of another of our fine players, the next change I wisely put in something along the line of West Coast tanking (this was when they were title contender) and bam bam...they kept losing matches they shouldn't.

Loved that password, so on the next change I suggested Essendon gets what they deserved for cheating. Ahem, semi effective I have to say.

Anyway, this superstition thing is all rubbish, so come Monday I'll change to what I always wanted which is how great freo is and how we'll win the flag. :p

At the start of the millennium, I had a lucky tie, and bought great magic to closing deals at work and the like. in the mid 2000's I wondered one day if this could extend to football, and when i thought the game important enough (Derby's, potential finals etc) it went in my pocket, and never lost. The last time I took to the footy, was the J-Lo after the siren goal game (after my mates commented sadly on the passing of the mythical ties brilliance in the 3rd quarter) and we wavedthat very average looking piece of silk post game. I took it home, placed in a drawer, and promised it wont be used again until one day, in a Grand Final. It has sat lonely, and in review, very ugly since then.

I have guaranteed GF tickets.

So rest easy one and all, the tie lives.

Superstition and karma is a load of crap. But I am at the stage where I would happily stand naked and on one leg in the Hay St Mall whistling Dixie if it meant we would win a flag. So stay away from that flag!!
