Test Surely the Cummins/McDonald captain/coach setup is the worst in Australian Test history

Hard to break up the nsw bowling quartet when it’s among the best in history and any member of it would be the best bowler in most other sides in the world.

Yeah, yeah you love Mitch. Wouldn’t get a game for England given his pies are completely ineffective in England.

In fact the only countries his pies are effective in are Sri Lanka and the Windies, but that’s probably more the fact they’re minnows and get out to shit anyway.

Except he would, wouldn’t he. He’d be at worst your second best bowler.
He averages 29 in England. The fact that Brydon Carse is likely to be your best for the foreseeable future speaks volumes. Has Shoaib Bashir brought his domestic average below 50 yet?

If that’s where he struggles, he must be doing something right.

Be stupider.

That’s actually his 3rd best country outside Australia. But hey celebrate his average hitting 30 in red ball cricket as he goes for over 5 an over. Such a superstar.

No, dig up stupid!

It’s hard for the coach when you can’t break up the NSW bowling quartet.

You see, instead of any relevant argument about the bowlers themselves, you have a pot shot at where they'e from.

Bowling isn't the reason for losing the final.

typical Australian cricket selectors, with their "drive the car until the wheels fall off" mentality

Marnus scored some runs in the Oz summer just when he needed too. The right decision would have been to drop him. Green at #3 an absolute head-scratcher.

But they'll head to the windies against average opposition and score runs. Selectors will pick them for the Ashes.

The captain plays so many roles, both off and on the field.

Off-field:
  • keeping morale high and the team cohesive in the dressing room.
  • speaking to the media and being the public face of the side.
  • preparing and enacting the side's strategy going into series/matches, including selection and batting order.

On-field:
  • putting the team on the back and fighting out of tough positions.
  • predicting where a match is heading and getting ahead of it, changing the team's strategy or approach on the fly.
  • In the field, making bowling changes and setting fields for the situation.

It's rare for a captain to excel in all facets. Cummins is excellent at all of the off-field stuff, although you could question whether selection wise he is a little too willing to move the order around to keep the boys together rather than making calls on poor performance and giving new guys a go.

He's also one of the best Australia has ever had in terms of dragging the team back into a match (with both bat and ball). I think in the field he is too defensive and reactive but sometimes the method works, and he does have a good instinct for bowling changes. But I think maybe his main weakness is that he lacks the ability to adapt the team approach during a match and anticipate where in the broader context the team needs to get to. He will often stick far too long at a plan or not convey to the batters the importance of just getting through a tough session for greener pastures. Maybe this is where the fact that he is not in the top 7 has an effect-- he is less able to influence the direction of a batting innings than a batting captain could.

So ineffective in England that he was adjudged Australia's player of the series in the 2023 Ashes.

So letting the opposition score nearly 300 batting last wasn’t a factor?

But the location is relevant when they can’t be broken up and they cry in the media every time someone dares to suggest a rotation policy.

You’re trolling is particularly lacking in nuance and wit lately…I don’t remember it always being this flaccid but maybe I’m giving you too much credit

Mostly, Cummins captains well. A good record to prove it. His main issue though is when sides come at us and score freely, he looks lost. Bazball in 2023 had him lost and he really struggled in the 2nd innings of this Tests when SA scored very freely. He just goes defensive and hence leak singles. He is really going to have to sort that issue over summer with bazball hitting or shores.

I have read literally nobody say this, and I am a very anti Australian poster.

Literally just took 5 wickets and make a 50 N/O in the WTC in England lol

Posted this in the match thread, but thought i'd post it here as well.

Trying again to ask the question of if McDonald ever does any actual technical coaching? Is he a team manager, a strategist? What does he do??????????

Khawaja out AGAIN playing his absolutely diabolically stupid "jump in the air" shot instead of a regulation forward or backward defence. Why is that I, as a coach who has coached only to U17 level, can see this - AND MCDONALD CAN'T!!???

Should have been in the nets post the WTC loss facing ball after ball trying to work on getting his feet and head steady and grounded.

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO obvious.......

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO frustrating........
