Just looking at the top 5's in the stats courtesy of the 2011 yearbook.

Perhaps not surprising is that Fyfe is in the top 5 for 22 of the 27 categories!
He is either first or second for:
Total disposals, Contested possessions, uncontested possessions, handballs, handballs received, effective handballs, total marks, contested marks, clearances, total kicks, hard ball gets, loose ball gets, smothers, running bounces, inside 50's, score assists and dream team points! What a year!

Given the level of general disappointment with Stephen Hill's year it is interesting to note he still finished top 5 in:
Total Disposals, Uncontested possessions, Handballs, Received handballs, effective handballs, total kicks, long kicks, loose ball gets, smothers, running bounces (1), inside 50's (3), score assists (2), and goals!

Despite our anger with Pav playing mid he still managed top 5 in:
Total disposals (2), Contested possessions (2), uncontested possessions, handballs, handballs received (1), effective handballs, contested marks, clearances (1), total kicks (1), long kicks (1), short kicks, effective kicks, hard ball gets (2), smothers, tackles, running bounces, inside 50's (1), score assists (1), Goals and dream team points.

Michael Johnson, to your scorn and amazement managed top 5 in:
Total marks (3), contested marks, uncontested marks, hitouts, short kicks, effective kicks, loose ball gets AND spoils!

Others that stood out for me were:
Groves being number 1 for spoils (shows he is still getting to the contest) as well as 3 for disposal efficiency!
Clarke 2 for disposal efficiency.
Duffield 2 in rebound 50's, equal 1 for effective kicks and 1 for short kicks.
Noted marshmallows Hill, Mundy and Mz all finished top 5 in smothers!

Make of that lot what you will!

Liking the summary and interesting enough, but sorry MJ hitouts is not a top 5 type stat when you have 16 for the season, and Ryan Crowley had 7.

Now how did I know the first couple of posts would seek to minimise any inference that MJ did anything useful? Surprised we haven't had a post running down Hill yet.

Yup! More negatives than a federal Liberal partyroom meeting chaired by Tony Abbott.

What is also unsurprising is that you're back on the drug-addled flaky loser's bandwagon after jumping off so often the season just gone. Like a battered wife.

My thoughts..

Goes to show that talk of Hill being dropped on this board was incredibly harsh and unwarranted, he had a down year but clearly still a contributor and highlights how unrealistically high some of our expectations where.

MJ still disapeared when it mattered though and consistently cleaned up when we were having a good run. I realize the same could be said for Hill but Hill has time on his side and isn't a big man who plays like a small guy.

Grover continues to surprise, considered done and dusted when we tried paying him in the forward line a few years ago. Yet continues to play a much required negating role, surely 2012 is his last though.

Talk of hill being dropped wasnt based on statistical output, but rather a tendency to attack the contest at less than 90%.

That still stands.

Can't say I noticed that Chimera. Maybe you've got video clips to back up your assessment. It's a pretty subjective thing anyway. Additionally there are a lot of factors involved relating to attack on the ball for a player like Hill, not the least of which is having confidence in those around you. With injury induced instability in the team, combined with below par performnce from many players I would suggest that confidence in team mates would likely have been low.

I think you're over complicating it.

Hill did not attack the ball as well as he should have in 2011, his decision or instincts not to attack the ball in the correct manner was and is not a teammate issue at all.

It's a fault Hill must work on, Dal Santo copped some weeks from Lyon for similar issues so hopefully Ross can straighten him out.

You're not going to attack the ball if you're not confident in your body, though. Courage is great in a player but not recklessness. Recklessness leads to things like breaking your team mates' legs, as we've done too often lately. Besides, I can only think of two or three times this year when hill seemed to check himself, other times I recall him going in head over the ball.

I suppose once is too often. Unless you're including your own stats in there BOTR. How many have you done?

63% of the time 48% of those stats won't be surprising to 71% of Fremantle supporters.
