Autopsy Swans Vs Dees Rnd 4

I really like this post mikey_san and think you have it exactly right, except perhaps Blakey.

McInerney did do some very nice stuff, and will improve with every run he gets I think.

Ollie is picking up as the season progresses. Can't remember if he had a full pre-season or not, but I'll be looking for him to double down against the Tigers.

And Blakey has had at least one stand up moment in every game he has played, and not let us down. He looks like he's made of sticks, but MUST be tougher than he looks. Also, I think he's kicked a goal in every game he has played so far, so if we're dropping him for a stint with Hayward out, we need to make sure we bring in a solid goal kicker.

Nope, Blakey didn’t hit the scoreboard on Thursday night. I like Blakey but players have been dropped for better form than what he has shown. He’s showing the quintessential young star traits. Like Florent in his first few games, just teasing us with glimpses of his talent but otherwise being a passenger. We have to remember that we’re a team first and foremost, not a platform for youngsters to press their cases. If they’re not pressing their cases by contributing to the team in more than small glimpses, then realistically they probably shouldn’t be playing.

More likely just is a bit lost with his leading patterns with Reid, Franklin, Sinclair and McCartin alongside him.

Harsh. Dropping him now would leave the kid in parlous shape and do the team a disservice. I think he should get a least another game and be encouraged to get some cheapie handpasses and show how he can use his pace to the team's advantage.
No.
Dropping him would simple be an acknowledgement that he is not ready for seniors.

Dropping Cor and Mellican did the team a disservice.

Good point about Hayward being out. I'd put McCartin forward and bring Reg back. Though McCartin might be our best option on Lynch size and athletically tbh so....

The only reason I advocate resting Blakey is to manage that body. Travel away next week v a home NEAFL game (?) - allows him to concentrate on eating and putting in a gym session during the week, 3 to 4 games on, one game off I think is a good mix for him this year. Horse has a tendency to run players into the ground, maybe through lack of options, but still.

Ollie didn't have much of a preseason due to injury, is picking it up now - that was his best half of footy. Lets see if he can hit 3/4s next week.
Agreed on all points, except I say we need to bring in a solid goal kicker and you're talking McCartin??? I mean seriously??? I love McCartin, and I think he's going to be brilliant, but right now?? He can't hit the side of a barn! 100% effort every minute of the game, but a solid goal kicker he is not!

Horse running players into the ground is a handy throw away line and you know it. With the medical staff and the AFLPA, it's just not going to happen. But let's not side-track this conversation... Sooner or later Blakey is going to need a rest, who is going to replace him in our kicking line up?

Thought Ollie must have been short on the pre-season... he and Buddy will probably be hitting full fitness at about the same time! Should be good to watch!!! :)

Please don't take this the wrong way, but that bolded bit is hysterical coming from you!

And contributing or not, if they are better than any of the replacements, then they stay in the team!

How is it bullshit? they beat Melbourne by 13 goals their playing list didnt have as many off-season surgeries as ours therefor they are better equipped to handle a 5 day break than us.

Another one ! Great ! Is there anybody else on the Board who can come up with another one ??? So we go through this year putting inept after inept performance and there will always be reasoning for it right ? Don't bother replying I get It. It's Bullshit that's why we are on our way to excepting mediocrity again that's if we haven't already got there.

You along with a few are vastly overrating this list Thursday night was not a inept performance it was better than what we have produced so far.

Not having a go at you mate by the way :)

Me neither so apologies if I'm sounding abrasive but my rating of the list is very conservative I can tell you.

No need to apologize mate we are paying the price for continued success from 2012 made a few questionable list decisions let go of the wrong players and kept the players we should of let go.

Longmire contrary to belief is not dumb he knows very well of our list position so does the club.

So that makes them more capable physically to handle a 5 day break and still win ???? Book of excuses and argument for them get more exaggerated by the day on this Board.

Agree. If it is not the umps (and believe me I am no fan), its the injuries, five day breaks, underdone players, young players or the coach and the strategies he uses (and believe me I am no fan). On Thursday we were beaten by a superior team.

Plenty, don't hold back.

I have said repeatedly said I am under no illusion that this list is top 4 material and possibly maybe not even top 8 but there is no way known the available talent on it are bottom 4 or anything near the rubbish they are dishing up. If you are being smart and trying to get me to critique every player on the list to respond and critique my appraisal or are wanting me to go into a full on rant about it you are going to be disappointed.

I'm not being smart. A lot of very strong opinions fly around here so it's always good to get context.

I think both are about 14th - which unsurprisingly is where we sit. I don't expect to be much higher come finals.
That Melbourne team are pretty awful with about 3 players excepted - and they beat us.
Saints, Suns, Carlton might be below us. After that....maybe Port rookies run out of steam or Freo get tired, Hawks injuries pile up...

Short of landing Coniglio in the offseason we might be down a while.
I'd also give English at the Dogs manager a call with a 5 year 750,000 offer and see if we could tempt him from the year after - looks to be the next good ruck, just needs a bit of strength - god knows we need one.

One thing that is noticable is that heeney has matured physically...while not massive he is carved out of stone and looks "hardened"...ready to take over not only the club but the league
I've noticed. He's become more Fyfe like in his stature.

How so? I give youngsters the benefit of the doubt if they have shown they can be best 22 players. I can cop down games from Hayward, Florent, Papley etc because there are times when they have stood up and been as important to the team as anyone. Where my tolerance runs out is when it’s clear some guys just aren’t meant to be in the senior team but are getting games because of a few teases of potential. That alone is not enough to earn the benefit of the doubt IMO, which is why Florent, Papley, Hayward etc have it, and Blakey, McInerney etc don’t.
