In the Herald -Sun this morning, Andrew Ireland says Good Friday footy is tradition in Sydney so why can't the Swans jump on board,
All for this and make it against Collingwood, any footy on this boring day would be good.
Why not? I would prefer we played Carlton.

Couldn't be against Pies. Sometimes ANZAC Day and Easter fall close together which could make it difficult for Pies if say ANZAC Day was the Wednesday just before/after ANZAC Day.

I'd prefer the Swans-Giants season opener to replace the Blues-Tigers - if the AFL are serious about the 'national code', I don't think the season opener should be a Melbourne-centric affair.

Not a big fan of loading the season with 'fixed' marquee games, you need to get the balance right.

I'd rather not make it against Collingwood. They have enough bragging rights for crowds and a incredibly biased and predictable fixture as it is.

I would say a better team to play would be Essendon. A team that isn't really seen as our big rivals but there's that undercurrent of hatred.

If we were to play against a team which is already known as our rivals (St Kilda, West Coke, etc), it would be torn apart as a 'gimmicky' kinda match by the RL media.

It would also be a waste, imo. You could put a West Coke match at any time of the year and it would naturally draw attention. Good Friday footy would be a good opportunity to build on unestablished rivalries rather than already established rivalries.

All for it. Out-dated tradition that has stayed way beyond its welcome.
Pretty much how I feel, would be great to kick back with a beer and bbq on a pretty boring day and the weather is usually still ok around easter. That goes for good crowds too.

First team I thought of was Essendon. I like the idea of us owning Goodes Friday.

It's true. The reason ANZAC day doesn't work for us is because it seems like we're just leeching off another games success. If we have Good Friday we could make it our own.

Essendon doesn't work for the same reason the Pies don't work.

Scheduling problems?

If it weren't for the schedule I'd say an Essendon game would be ideal.

If not Essendon or Collingwood, I'd say the next best (When I say 'next' best I mean a very distant 'next'), would be Carlton, since there's an underlying hatred there too.

Collingwood... I don't know. I think the hatred is a little too generic for my liking. People often say they 'hate' Collingwood just because it's what everyone else says.

If I was 100% honest, I would actually thank them (Collingwood) for coming to ANZ every year and increasing interest in the code and embracing their little annual trip to Sydney.

Edit: I can see a St Kilda match working seeing as there is heat between the two clubs. I'd like to see a Norf game too... but honestly they're such a pitiful club I can't see them drawing very well. Also... I don't want to give Norf any lifelines or generating interest in their shitty club. Both these clubs are fairly small though, so despite the hatred I have for them, they wouldn't create that much interest for neutrals.

How about the Demons, an apposite choice for Good Friday

I dislike the demons option for a number of reasons.

1) They just plain suck on field and swans supporters would want a competitive game. (Then again, I guess I would enjoy an annual thrashing)
2) The game was already trialled and proved to be a failure on ANZAC Day.
3) Despite bearing the name 'Melbourne' they really generate no interest or passion for most neutrals. They're a tiny club on the grand scheme of things and a slightly larger club would be better.
4) The match would be seen as rather gimmicky seeing as it's 'Melbourne v Sydney.'
5) Both clubs do not have a history of good matches and supporters generally do not dislike each other.

To be honest, I actually don't mind having no footy on Good Friday.
If there is footy it'll need to be a night game because plenty of people go to church at 3pm.
