Listening to music is a simple, yet effective solution. Also agree with others that spending time with the girlfriend works really well.

My older brother is a lawyer, and he's got to deal with pretty much 7 cases everyday. He's running everywhere with stacks of papers, listening to everyone. It's clearly taking a toll on him, and most of his clients are dicks.

I've always admired his backbone, and being able to deal with sticky situations & his hard work ethic, it rubbed off on me.

But recently he's been thinking suicide thoughts, not kidding. That's how bad it is.

And it's taking a toll on his relationship with his girlfriend too. She always wants to go out, but he's too busy until the sun goes down and back up again.

It really does show how a job you rely on so much can effect your life dramatically, tbh.

:(

Yes, lawyers have often been voted the most depression-prone professionals, it's a combination of being expected to pull 70-hour weeks and the fact that many lawyers are perfectionists, but tell your brother to seek professional help - that's the only way!

I'd also encourage you to check out Survive Law, the brainchild of a handful of UTS Law Honours students, one of whom I know through a mutual friend, particularly the section 'Don't Get Me Down'.

It's not a substitute for professional help, but it's useful to understand what your brother is dealing with. Good luck!

There seems to be a few teachers on here, and I have just joined the bretheren.

It's the best job in the world, I've started as a relief teacher (and since I'm PE trained, I'm getting a lot of PE classes to do), therefore it's a piece of piss and I can ad-lib my classes straight away.

I actually had a girl last week (my third day since I was qualified) get taken to hospital in an ambulance, it didn't affect me at all, she went arse over tit running after a footy...accidents happen, I move on.

My Friday actually went like so...

Before school = home group, mark role, etc
Period 1 = Year 9 maths class, their teacher came in to tell them what Q's to do (he had to cover another class) and went mental at them, so they were quiet as a mouse. I read the paper.
Period 2 = Year 9 Boys Pathways class. This is basically a class for the troublemakers of the school. I joined with the class next door and we played poker.
Period 3 = Year 11 PE. Got given no role, or instructions. Kicked footy outside for a period.
Period 4 = Off
Period 5 & 6 = School assembly.

$250 later. Thanks for coming.

Relief teacher AND PE? No wonder you can strut around with an idiot grin :D

Of those who teach, what percentage of you work at home once you leave school gates? For those who don't (and don't teach PE), how do you pull it off?

A 8.5 - 9 hour day at school is one thing, but it's the 90 minutes-2hrs at home that screws you up. Plus 3-5 hours of your weekend.

Does it get any easier? yeah, if you're organised. Still haven't got that bit right after 6 years:(.

Managing after work? Exercise (or before work if you can); time with your partner/kids/pets/mates; Friday drinks; at least one day of the weekend to totally enjoy as you see fit.

For me personally, If I go out sometime on the weekend, probably get completely shit housed and have a great time, everything during the week seems to be easy, kinda like 'I will work hard for 5 days, then lose all my brain cells on Saturday night...**** YEAH'

To be honest I've only recently started doing this, I used to do little work and put in a minimal effort, but for some reason having a good weekend makes the weekdays better.

Ive changed my eating habits and it has paid dividends. Having a big lunch realy keeps you going and makes me full untill dinner time which is about 7-7:30. Before i was still hungry after lunch and i felt like crap and hungry by 3pm which makes you feel crap the rest of the night.

Having a big lunch helps me come home do some exercise for bout 30mins - which is a great way to loosen the body up and destress then i eat dinner, shower..relax unwind hang out with mates etc.. The exercise and full stomach also helps me sleep better and it makes waking up in the morning easier.

Have a huge lunch!

One thing that's always amazed me is the number of people who work really long hours without getting paid overtime... See a lot of my friends do this. WTF? Why bust your hump for someone else and have nothing to show for it. Working long hours obviously contributes to the stress.

I had a job in the financial planning industry about 3 years after I completed uni. The boss called me in once and asked me that given our work load why I never stayed back beyond 5:30pm. I told him straight: pay me and I will. He didnt pay me overtime so I didnt work overtime. I resigned about 2 weeks later.

As a first year teacher, my job definitely takes over all aspects of my life more than I would like. It's a case of getting home and then spending hours preparing for the next day, fine tuning lesson plans. Then there's all the bullshit admin work and assessment. I'm hoping it will get easier the longer I do it.

Aw, I've been stalking you from SRP and here's me thinking you are a real Kop when really you are a Kindergarten Kop. You sure its not a tumour? :p

Sorry, no harm meant, I'm not really stalking you

I am interminably bored and saw you as an active user on the Society, Religion & Politics board a few minutes ago, your name intrigued me so i searched your posts and found this thread, I was expecting a real, bona fide cop :D

ha ha ok. The Kop part of my name is a reference to the Liverpool "Kop"

I would get him some serious professional advice and help.

Lifeline or Beyond Blue is a start.

No job or money is worth your life.:thumbsd:

Suicide is a sad way to leave this world unfortunately for people that choose this path there lives are so very dark to them that they cannot think rationally.

I would strongly urge that you do whatever it takes to help him

Cutting down on a few of lifes luxuries may help him to choose a career path that is less stressful.

Please take my advice seriously.
