As is always the case, the women’s tournament takes centre stage in Sydney whilst the men’s draw doesn’t look quite so appealing. If this doesn’t say it all I don’t know what will, Gael Monfils is the tournament’s top seed...

Lleyton Hewitt will be hoping his body holds up and he’ll probably be thankful his ranking was high enough to give him a bye through to the second round. It is likely he’ll then face Andreas Seppi who he should account for pretty comfortably, although nothing seems to be easy for Lleyton these days. I actually think Lleyton has a terrific draw here and if he’s playing near his best he should at the very least reach a Semi Final. Young Aussie Nick Lindahl faces a stern test first up when he runs into Marcos Baghdatis; how the Cypriot responds after an embarrassing loss to Berdych in Brisbane will be interesting to observe. Petre Luczak faces Jose Acasuso and I’ll give him a fair chance to progress and in doing so would set up an encounter with 2nd seed Tomas Berdych. Carsten Ball faces Mardy Fish, tough but certainly winnable if he plays his best.

Talented ball striking will be on offer when Gasquet faces Lopez, a nice first round match. The entire bracket from Wawrinka to Andreev is extremely weak and both should advance to face each other in the Quarters. I’m desperately hoping Sam Querrey can rebound after a tough first match back after a long layoff following a serious arm injury. The one thing he needs more than anything is match practice so he really needs to win at least one match to give him some momentum and confidence heading to Melbourne. He faces the dangerous Korolev first up who on his day can blast opponents off the court.

If Berdych can carry over his form from Brisbane it’s hard not to see him winning this title. In saying that, does he even want to make it deep? If so it would effectively mean 4 weeks straight if he intends to play in the second week of the Australian Open. I’ve got the feeling he’ll fall to Querrey in the QF’s. Hewitt’s draw should make him a real threat here but there’s always concerns over his health and now is no different. Monfils is a joke and entirely unpredictable (before his predictable dummy spit) so unsure what he’ll offer up this week. I’m going to be a bit bold and say Hewitt to defeat Gasquet in the final. Coverage starts tomorrow on Channel 7. Interesting to note that those with Foxtel, Eurosport will be showing at least one women’s SF live so keep an eye on their broadcasting of this tournament. :thumbsu:

Is this the best women’s field in the history of this tournament? I went last year and I don't remember it being this loaded! I'm pretty sure I read than Henin has withdrawn from this tournament citing a slight injury, more like she is a bit fatigued and doesn’t want to be playing 4 weeks straight, completely fair enough but disappointing for Sydney. Especially the case when she was drawn to face Serena in only the second round! Even the final round of qualifying which will be played tomorrow features some really talented players.

A bit shattered to be honest that Azarenka is playing Lisicki in the first round, I mean there aren’t many tournaments where the world #23 faces a top ten player in the first round; such is the quality of the field here. Kleybanova is the last direct acceptance and she is ranked 30! I’m intrigued to see the first round encounter between Kuznetsova and Kleybanova. The latter is an interesting one, certainly possess enough talent to be achieving good results but it appears consistency is her biggest issue. Rotten luck for Radwanska, she’s 10 in the world and yet just missed out on seeding which means she’ll face world #2 Safina in the second round. I’m starting to wish I was in Sydney again!

As for the Aussies, Dellacqua will face a qualifier first up but unsure of who it is yet. If she wins she’ll probably face Zvonareva but Vesnina has the potential to cause an upset. Samantha Stosur will be looking to regain some form and confidence after a pretty miserable week in Perth, she faces Flavia Pennetta first up in an incredibly tough match. To be honest I don’t like her chances in that one given the form Flavia displayed in the latter stages of 2009.

Quite a few players are making their first appearances of the year in Sydney which is reason for excitement and for a couple of players this will mark their first official matches after kicking off their years in exhibition events in Perth and Hong Kong. With such an intense draw it’s difficult to predict who’ll take the title. You’d normally like Serena to get up but you can never be sure how hard she’ll push herself this close to the Australian Open. To be honest I’ve got absolutely no clue as to who’ll win here; it’d be good to see a youngster like Azarenka taste success but I’ll go for Kuznetsova to beat Wozniacki in the final.

Pretty gentle draw here for Hewitt, and none of those players should cause him any trouble. Whether they will is another story.

Pennetta is a horrific draw for Stosur and I don't think she'll win either. She won their final in LA and made the final in Auckland last week so I think she's got too much for Stosur considering how she's playing at the moment.

Its a great draw for the womens

I was impressed with Martinez Sanchez with her hopman cup - watch out for her to be the bolter of the AO

as for the mens apart from Hewitt and Luczac have pretty good draws but Ball has Baghdatis & Lindahl has Marty Fish and both are going to be extreamly tough

was taking about this to Drummond in the Brisbane Internatioal thread but we just need ATP title win to give Berdych the confidence he is obviously lacking

Any news on the wildcards yet?

I know it's only an ATP 250 but Sydney should try and entice a few of the bigger names to play. This is the weakest draw I can remember, Brisbane had a superior field to this. A few years back Nadal played, just last year Djokovic played (thanks to bombing out in Brisbane), this year there's really no one that stands out. It's disappointing especially when you consider there are probably bigger names playing in Chennai and that's the same prize money. I would've thought being in Australia would've been more suitable preparation. Doha is loaded with cash so that explains why most of the top guys played there.

Typical Svetlana, probably going to lose despite being well in control. This is why I'd never put any money on her matches, she's unpredictable.

I started a post on this yesterday after the draw was released, but aborted halfway through. Good analysis Drummond, the one thing I would pick you up on is the weakness of the Wawrinka/Andreev section. Watch out for Dudi Sela, who is drawn to play Wawrinka in the 2nd round - these two had a very tight semi in Chennai overnight, with Wawrinka ultimately winning 7/5 in the 3rd. Overall though, probably the weakest section of the draw.

On the strength of the draw generally, it's a bit disappointing but I suppose to be expected the week before a slam - the top guys don't want to be playing too deep into this week, particularly given there's an option to have 3 high-quality hits at Kooyong (a tournament which I hate). Further, for the top 10 guys, only their best 2 ATP 250 results for the year count towards their ranking, so the ranking points available in Sydney is not really an incentive over Kooyong.

One last thing - Aussie Marinko Matosevic has just beaten 5th seed Daniel Gimeno-Traver in the final qualifying round, so it will be interesting to see where he ends up in the draw. I reckon Seppi would be ideal - then if he was to win it would set up an all-Aussie 2nd round clash with Hewitt.

Does anyone know how the qualifiers get allocated their spot in the main draw (out of the 4 qualifier slots?). Is it done by another draw, or some other procedure?

I agree with your point generally, that they need to entice some big names, but unless you count Soderling as a big name, I don't agree with this point. Chennai's field fell away pretty badly after Soderling, Cilic and Wawrinka. The seeding cutoff in Sydney is 40 (Chennai 79) and the 5th seed from Chennai is unseeded in Sydney (Sela). The Sydney draw has great depth, Llodra being the last acceptance at 68, but definitely needs one or 2 top 10 players to liven it up a bit.

Just randomly, there's also Starace he could draw as well which would be good considering how much of a mug he is on a hardcourt.

Looking at that men's draw, I'm actually thinking Lleyton has a good shot at doing decently here providing he is fit although sadly enough he's lost to Seppi here in Sydney before. Berdych would be my tip.

The women's field is always this strong and sadly Sam will probably lose horribly, I saw that final she lost to Pennetta in LA, if anything Sam is in worse form than that. As for the winner, who knows, i'll go Wozniacki but it could be a number of players

I don't like the idea of making the final on the Men's side in Sydney. When is the last time a finalist from the Sydney tournament has won the Aus Open on the mens side? I actually don't know, but I don't think the records are that good for it.

No idea about finalists, but Henin won both in 2004 and Sampras in 1995. Doesn't make for great reading, but that might be down to the fields more than anything else.

I'd imagine Auckland would make for horrific reading and Kooyong a lot better?

Gasquet has raced through the first set 6-1 against Lopez

Jankovic 4-4 against the hungarian quaifer Agnes Szavay

Seppi is playing an Aussie qualifer in Marinko Matosevic and just broke him for a 5-4 lead

oh dear and the italian isnt playing that well either

Gasquet was a easy winner agaisnt Lopez - look for him to be a bit of a bolter this week and the AO

Agnes Szavay has a break of serve agasisnt Jankovic in the final set

Seppi beat Marinko Matosevic in straight sets but the scoreline says Marinko pushed him

My tip for the womens, Martinez Sanchez is on serve aginst Lepchenko of USA in the first set

Gasquet was sublime this morning, totally controlled the match from start to finish. Of course assisting him was how useless Lopez was and the fact that it's a nightmare match up for Lopez. He was just camped in the forehand corner all match and Gasquet was picking off winners to the entire half of the court that was consistently open. Gasquet my tip to reach the final.

Stosur, no words. The way she's going unless she draws a spud in the first round I can't see her winning a match in Melbourne.

Everyone has a comfort zone. Successful people force themselves to step outside this comfort zone to achieve something they would otherwise be unable to achieve within the original anxiety-neutral comfort zone. As soon as Sam went back to David Taylor she returned to her comfort zone. This is Sam's level... it won't change, it will never change... this is it.

I still wonder how she won Osaka, her bad form started US Open and then carried through the Asian circuit until she suddenly won Osaka, then it went back to crap. Just harden up Sam, you're the world number 13 for god sakes.
