I thought I would mention that there is a senior womens' league running here in Sydney.

It started in 1999 and ran independently of the AFL here in Sydney until 2012, when the girls voted to become part of the Sydney AFL administration.

It has gradually grown over the years and originally (from memory) comprised only inner city clubs.

In 2012 there will be 11 senior clubs, with a very good sign being that the comp is gradually branching out into the suburbs.

My local club, Penrith, is fielding a ladies' side for the first time this coming year, something I thought I would never see. :D

2012 sides:
Auburn, Balmain, Mac Uni, Newtown, UTS Shamrocks, Southern Power, Sydney Uni, Western Wolves, UNSW/ES, Wollongong and Penrith.

Unfortunately a few clubs have come and gone over the years from what I can tell (Bondi, Macarthur, St George and possibly others).

Round 1 action according to the AFL Women's Website saw 10 of the 11 clubs playing at Mahoney Oval, Marrickville on Super Saturday. The newest team of the competition the Penrith Ramettes had a bye and their first game will be in Round 2.

The website shows that the winning clubs were Auburn Tigers 5.4.34 over the UTS Shamrocks 2.4.16. Well done Tigers who seem to have a lot of enthusiasm. :) In the second game Wollongong Saints 6.6.42 defeated Macquarie University Warriors 2.2.14. Apparently a revup by the Saints coach in the 3/4 break had the desired effect. In the third game the UNSW Easts Stingrays leapt to the top of the table winning 5.5.35 to 1.4.10 over a gallant Southern Power. According to one of the spectators at the game Courtney Gum was like Gary Ablett pulling in about 40 possessions easy as you please. Newtown Breakaways renewed pleasant acquaintances over the Western Wolves winning 9.12.66 to 4.5.29. In the Grand Final replay. Balmain Dockers triumphed 10.4.64 to Sydney University 7.2.44.

Good luck to all the clubs in the 2012 AFL Sydney Women's Season.

Round 2 action in Sydney according to the AFL Women's Website was affected by rain with ground changes and a postponement.

The website shows that the winning clubs were the premiers Balmain Dockers 9.16.70 defeating UNSW Stingrays 3.6.24 out at the Village Green. Knowing the ground it probably was a decent mudpile in the middle.

In the second game Debut Club Penrith travelled to the wide expanses of Monarch Oval in Macquarie Fields to play Auburn. Penrith has a good writeup which is much better than mine at their website but here's what they wrote:

After a few days of heavy rain, football looked in grave doubt until the sun shone through on the Friday preceding round three.

The opening round of the "celebrity" team, the Ramettes, was scheduled for Mona Park against Auburn Tigers, but with the ground closure was transferred to Monarch Oval at Macquarie Fields. The team had a meeting on Wednesday, after training was cancelled due to the heavy rain and set a target of kicking four goals in their clash against Auburn, who were 1-0 after their opening win against UTS Shamrocks. Two trial matches against strong opposition had seen the girls unable to kick a goal, so it was a quite ambitious target.

A few late withdrawals saw the team reduced to 20 players as they arrived at a sodden Monarch Oval. Monarch is regarded as the biggest ground in Sydney AFL and the match looked likely to be a very low scoring affair. In the opening minutes, the ramettes got the better of play with Kate Easthope having first opportunity to goal but the shot went wide for a behind. Soon after, Nat Camilleri, one of many playing their first game, wrote herself into the history books with the teams first ever goal. The Tigers fought back and grabbed the next two, before Easthope went one better with her next kick to add the second six-pointer to the tally. A late Auburn goal saw them go to a narrow 6 point lead at the fisrt break.
Auburn started to open the game up in the second quarter with elite player Kirrily Boyd causing havoc and being the mastermind of their three goals scored in the quarter. Penrith however, were going hard into the contest and withstood the attack with Camilleri posting her second, the teams going to the sheds with Auburn extending their lead to 18.

Enthusiasm was high at the break with coaches John Rix and Jake Sultana full of praise at the commitment and endeavour under the tough conditions. The team was aware of the Tigers key players that needed to be controlles, Stephanie Kostic putting up her hand quickly to play on Boyd as the play resumed in the third session. It was an arm-wrestle for the next twenty minutes with Auburn collecting 1.1 whilst Kayla Badger put a nice kick between the big sticks in reply. Defence was the story as both teams went hard at the ball. A serious knee injury saw vice-captain Vanessa Geisler carried from the field in agony as her day ended after a sterling performance. Auburn took the quarter by a single point to lead by 19.

The final twenty minutes saw some sparkling moments from both teams with Auburn grabbing three goals and it was the young guns Lauren Bozic and Sarah Rowley who joined in the action with a goal apiece. The more experinced Tigers running out 25 point winners to keep their unbeaten record intact.

The club, supporters and support staff on the day were treated to a mighty effort by the new kids on the block who put on a magnificent performance. Natalie Camilleri was sensational in the mid-field, taking great grabs and running all game. Kate Easthope celebrated her recent birthday with a fine debut along with the dynamic "pocket rocket" Jess Noble who flung herself at her bigger opponents. Fran Fitting was excellent in the ruck, putting good hits on whilst Ashley Grosas and Sarah Rowley got better as the game progressed, Sarah, sister of Rams player Nathan, edging to the lead in the family goalkicking hall of fame. But it was indeed a real 20 "guy" team effort and not a single player left anything in the tank on the day.

Next week, the team hosts their first match at home at Dukes Oval to take on a strong side in Uni NSW on Sunday to continue their football journey

Penrith Ramettes 2.1 3.1 4.2 6.3-39 def by Auburn Tigers 3.1 6.2 7.3 10.4-64

Best Players: N. Camilleri, K. Easthope, J. Noble, A. Grosas, S. Rowley, Z. McDonagh

In the afternoon matches the Western Wolves 8.10.58 defeated an ever improving Macquarie University Warriors 3.1.19 at Picken Oval. In the final match Southern Power 9.14.68 won over a rebuilding UTS Shamrocks 0.0.0.

The final match of Sydney University playing Newtown has been shifted to the Queens Birthday Public Holiday.

So at the end of Round 2 Balmain and Auburn are the only undefeated teams with two wins.

CANBERRA FOOTY
As the website is not updated instantly unlike Sydney, there may be a timelag.

In Round 1 Ainslie thumped poor ANU to set a record which i haven't seen for some time - 31.17.203 to 0.1.1. Soccer star Grace Gill who plays for Canberra United in the W-League scoring 7 goals.

Riverina 14.3.87 defeated a surprising ADFA 0.0.0

Premiers Eastlake showing their premiership form 11.8.74 defeated Tuggeranong 1.0.6

Gungahlin 5.10.40 defeated Queanbeyan 1.1.7

In Round 2

It was Riverina's turn to thump ANU 23.22.160 to 0.1.1. Amy Coote with 8 goals.

Ainslie toughed it out over an always improving Gungahlin 10.19.79 to 0.0.0

Belconnen won narrowly in Katrina Gallaway's 100th match 4.3.27 over rivals Tuggeranong 3.5.23 with Katrina scoring a goal to wrap up an enjoyable day.

Eastlake 8.3.51 played Queanbeyan 1.1.7 with the Tigers on the verge of an upset with the score 1.1.7 to 0.1.1 at half time. A stiff talking to by premiership coach Goddard had the proverbial rocket up the Demons to record their second win.

So now there is a crowded leaderboard with undefeated teams (2 wins) are Ainslie, Riverina and Eastlake which are three of the four finalists of 2011.

Round 3 Sydney Action saw all the games where the victors were fairly decisive on the scoreboard.

At Mahoney Oval, Marrickville, the Western Wolves thumped the hapless UTS Shamrocks 22.19.151 to 0.1.1 with Nikki Furlong scoring the first double digit haul of the season with 12 goals.

In the second game Balmain Dockers decisive over Southern Power 15.16.106 to at Gwawley Oval in the shire. Belinda Pride with 10 goals.

In the third game held at Mona Park, Auburn - it was the visitors Wollongong Saints 10.16.76 triumphing over Auburn Tigers 1.6.12.

In the fourth game held at Macquarie University it was the visitors Newtown Breakaways 16.4.100 accurately decisive over the Mac Uni Warriors 4.4.28. Verna Iles with 8 goals.

In the first Sunday game of the season, the newest team in the competition Penrith Ramettes hosted their first home game of the season at Dukes Oval. Unfortunately for them it was a kicking masterclass from high flying UNSW Stingrays 22.14.146 to 5.0.30. Ciska Van Schalwyk with 7 goals.

Belinda Pride leads the Golden Boot Competition 16 goals with Verna Iles chasing hard on 13 goals.

The table as it now stands is Wollongong, Balmain and Newtown still undefeated (using the Match Ratio %).

In Canberra Women's Footy
Round 3 action saw Gungahlin host Premiers Eastlake at Amaroo with Eastlake victorious 6.9.45 to 1.0.6.

Tuggeranong hosted ADFA at Football Park and after a dominant first half, shut up the shop and coasted to win 8.15.63 to 0.0.0.

Belconnen travelled to Queanbeyan and took home the chocolates 12.7.79 to 3.0.18.

Match of the round was grand finalist Riverina Lions traveling to picturesque Ainslie Oval to take on the Ainslie Tricolours. What a game it ended up being for the casual spectator as there were plenty of heavy hits (no doubt a remedial physio is required for both sides) and no quarter asked and no quarter given. Coach Mick Barnes of the Lions pretty much asked for the girls to run until the tank was empty and the Lions really ran out of petrol in the fourth quarter unable to convert despite dominating field possession. Ainslie took their one chance and goaled to hit the lead by 3 points. Another late hit resulted in a 50m penalty for Ainslie to lead by 9 and although the Lions scored a miraculous bouncing goal by Courtney Horan it was all too late and it was Ainslie victorious by 3 points - 6.5.41 to 6.2.38.

In the golden boot contest Amy Coote (Riverina) and Canberra United soccer player Grace Gill (Ainslie) are tied on 8 goals.

In the ladder Eastlake and Belconnen lead (no Match ratios are used in Canberra - 4 points for the bye) with both sides undefeated.

A report on the Penrith website on the match between Penrith Ramettes and Uni NSW Stingrays, with the Stingrays showing plenty of class and experience with a good win over the newcomers. Good to see strong numbers in all games so far. Probably should have divisionalised to avoid the inevitable blowouts but something that should be looked at next year.

Sunday morning saw the club move to picturesque Dukes Oval at Emu Plains under threatening skies when a very strong and talented Uni NSW Stingrays headed to the foot of the mountains to take on the Ramettes. The Stingrays had recorded a solid win in round one against Southern Power before going down to premiership favourites Balmain last week in a strong effort.

Penrith had named a full squad of 24 as well as an emergency. With the non-show of a couple of players, Raelene Matthews came into the side that also contained three new recruits in Sharon Braddish, Claire Manuel and former Victorian Ivanka Olcowik.

The Ramettes started the match in fine style with good control and matched the visitor’s goal for goal early in the match, racking up two apiece. The Stingrays late goal saw them take a slender lead after the first 20 minutes. The was obviously some concern at the first break in the away camp with the commitment and effort by the Ramettes as Uni NSW made some vital changes that saw them accumulate six unanswered second quarter goals despite some good defence by their opponents.

The Stingrays got into full flight in the third term adding another seven majors but Penrith to their full credit, chimed in with two of their own. The experienced Uni side, who have been at the higher end of the ladder in recent years after being a foundation member of the Women’s league in 2000, showed superior pace and skill as they added another six goals in the final term but the Ramettes can hold their heads high and finished with another one of their own.

Kate Easthope had another outstanding day showing exceptional skill and hard hits in her second game with the Sherrin and added another goal to last week’s effort. Natalie Camilleri ran all day, delivered well and took some great grabs in another inspiring match. Youngsters Lauren Bozic, Sarah Rowley and Jess Noble (1 goal) all impressed and will be shining lights in the future whilst Claire Manuel had the daunting task of restricting Stingrays star forward, Ciska Van Schalkwyk and did a fine effort in her first game. Former London resident, Sharon Braddish showed the switch from Rugby to Australia’s national game an easy transition with some fine defence whist Ivanka Olchowik returned to AFL with a solid performance up front including a good goal. Other scorers were Zeaona McDonagh and captain Kirstie Burcher who both got into the action to score their first AFL six-pointers.

Next week the girls travel to the home of Womens AFL at Mahoney Park where they will be in the mix for their first win when they play Macquarie University Warriors. Penrith are just a few percentage points in front of the Warriors and a great tussle is expected.

Regarding rules - in VWFL the only different rule is the size of the ball - slightly smaller as women tend to have smaller hands.

Great updates, it's good to hear about the other state comps!

Yep size of the ball is 4.5 for womens and 4 for Youth Girls

In round four action of the Sydney Womens AFL, it was back to Mahoney Oval, Marrickville to host “Super Saturday”. In round 1, league leaders Balmain Dockers hosted the UTS Shamrocks and with a few injuries, it looked like a tough ask for the Shamrocks. And so it proved to be as the Dockers supplied full-forward Belinda Pride with enough ball for 18 goals which equaled the league record set by Belinda Pride in Round 15, 2010 (against Macquarie University). Balmain 34.24.228 Shamrocks 0.0.0 18 goals to Belinda Pride

In game 2 Sydney University faced a tough Western Wolves outfit showing some promise. The match was fairly even till ¾ time where the experience and skill of the Bombers got them home 7.5.47 Western Wolves 3.2.20. A couple of the rookie Bombers are showing some fantastic promise and mixed in with the experienced Bomber players seem set for Finals action.

In game 3, Macquarie University faced a competitive challenge in the Penrith Ramettes. However six goals from the rampant Warriors put any hopes of the Ramettes scoring their first win today winning 13.8.86 Penrith Ramettes 1.3.9. Emma McCelland and Yasmin Seyfarth with 3 goals each.

In game 4 Wollongong Saints travelled up to play the inform UNSW Stingrays. The Saints did the upset of the season to handily defeat the Stingrays 11.10.76 UNSW 3.2.20. The Saints led from the opening quarter and kept extending their lead. If this keeps going up, the 4th spot for finals looks very interesting indeed.

In the last game of the day an inaccurate Southern Power 5.12.42 blasted away the Auburn Tigers 0.2.2.

The table sees Balmain, Newtown and Wollongong still undefeated using the Match Ratio %.

In the AFL Canberra Womens League Round 4 action saw four games at 10am on Saturday. With one match yet to be plugged in, Gungahlin won back to back matches against Belconnen at Jamison Oval. The Gungahlin Jets proving to be a bogey side for a few teams this season 4.4.28 to 1.8.14 and no doubt might cause a headache to other teams before the season is out.

At ANU Oval, Tuggeranong won their second match of the season 15.5.95 over a competitive ANU 0.1.1. Kat Ghiradello the star with 8 goals at full-forward. For ANU to keep a team under 100 points shows excellent progress.

In the match of the round held at Reid Oval Ainslie took on Eastlake. Ainslie have seemed to get over last year’s coaching changes and after last weeks win over Riverina, were confident going into the match against the Premiers. It was a tight affair, with a footy being lodged in the barbed wire requiring a new footy. However it was the 3rd quarter where Ainslie were about to finish their opportunities with two goals whilst Eastlake didn’t take advantage of theirs. Best on Ground according to me was Holly Cogle (Ainslie) and Emily Diprose (Eastlake) who won all the non-contested rucks in an interesting Ainslie tactic although Emily could have caught the ball and then direct the ball for the next attack. Ainslie 4.5.29 Eastlake 2.7.19

In the three-game Interstate clash Game 1 between NSW and the ACT held in Mona Park, Auburn – ACT 9.4.58 NSW 7.12.54. Reports say the game was tight until the final quarter although it seems NSW sprayed the ball with their chances in their forward 50m.

Round 1 of AFL Canberra Youth Girls AFL saw all four clubs play at the same venue in the early hours of Sunday morning. In the first game Grand Finalists and favourites for the flag Ainslie taught an inexperienced footballing lesson to an inexperienced in Tuggeranong 19-17-131 to 0.0.0.

Ainslie had a blowout 1st and 4th quarter scoring 6 and 8 goals respectively. Best for Ainslie were Rachel Friend, Karina Koeck and Meg Haynes. Best for Tuggeranong were Rachel Gregory, Taylah Grady and Emily Nugent.

In the second game a short staffed Weston Creek Wildcats borrowed some spare players from Gungahlin Jets to even up the numbers. Gungahlin ran the Wildcats around the ground, and despite some valiant efforts it was the Jets who were the winners 9-8-62 to 4-4-28. Best on Ground for the Jets were Kaitlin Dobing, Erika Vredenbregt and Taylann Cahill-Savage.

Uh, sounds like they might need to sort out some divisions?
Agree Oneiros. Was voted on at planning meeting by the 11 clubs and one division won by a single vote. Surprisingly or not, it seemed that the top teams voted for a single comp and the lower teams for divisionalisation. Compare it to the mens comp and it would be something like 3 Premier Div teams, 2 div 1 teams, 3 div 3 teams and 3 div 5 sides. I am sure it will be revisited in 2013. But it's great to see all 11 teams fielding sides every week, mostly with near capacity numbers. UTS and Penrith are getting regular floggings but still fronting up in numbers every week. UTS got rolled by Balmain last week by almost 40 goals with 16 players but full credit on having 20 yesterday where they were competitive with Uni NSW. Auburn have improved a fair bit in their second year and some reports that Wollongong looking shakey for a team at the start of the season have proven unfounded with their good numbers.
Comp just needs some tweaking in the future. Would like to see more home/away games and not as many gala days at Mahoney. I wasn't there last week but heard it was a bit lacklustre, especially with no canteen operating. Would have been a good money spinner for someone. Would like to see next year, a full day at Blacktown #1, possible intertwined with a youth girls on #2.

As Eddie McGuire used to say "What a big weekend in football".

In Sydney Womens Round 5, 77 goals were scored on the weekend so obviously defence not a priority - Tiwi Islands style!

On Saturday there were 4 games spread throughout Sydney.

In Game 1 at Greygums Oval, the Western Wolves dealt a footy lesson to the Penrith Ramettes in bragging rights of the Inner West (Ashfield) vs Greater West (Penrith), the end score 19.14.128 to 0.1.1. The Western Wolves were pretty consistent scoring 4, 6, 4, 5 goals in each quarter with Andrea Pearce with 6 goals.

In Game 2 at Trumper Oval, Paddington - the UNSW Stingrays were triumphant over a plucky Shamrocks side who recovered from their 200 point loss last week 12.9.81 to 2.1.13. After a tight first quarter, the Stingrays scored 3 goals per quarter to extend their lead. Ciska Van Schalwyk with 4 goals.

In Game 3, Sydney University travelled down the F6 to North Dalton Park, Wollongong to take on the Inform Wollongong Saints. The Saints made the Bombers earn their money, with the Bombers scoring 3, 1, 3 and 2 goals per quarter. The Saints are showing some steely resolve and seem to be the big improvers this year and may threaten for the 4th spot in Finals. Shelley Mulhern was the leading goalscorer with 2 goals to show the spread of goal-kickers. End score 9.3.57 to 2.1.13.

In Game 4, Newtown Breakaways broke out their GPS Navmans to go to Gwawley Oval, Taren Point to take on Southern Power. The Power made the Breakaways earn their bread too for the four points 8.12.60 to 2.4.16. After a fast start by the Breakaways with 5 goals in the opening quarter, it two goals in the second quarter, no goals in the third quarter, and one goal in the opening quarter. Best goalscorer for the Breakaways were Brooke Atkins with 3 goals.

On the Sunday Game, the Balmain Dockers at Henson Park got over the century mark for two weeks in a row - this weeks victim playing Auburn Tigers. End score 23.22.160 to 0.1.1. The Dockers scored 5, 3, 9 and 6 goals in each of the quarters with Belinda Pride with 6 goals.

The table now sees Balmain and Newtown the only undefeated teams using the Match Ratio formula.

In AFL Canberra Womens Round 5, ANU hosted Gungahlin on Breast Cancer Charity Match combined with the GWS Fans day after their magnificent victory over the Gold Coast Suns had a healthy crowd at ANU South Oval. The Jets in their pink jerseys 11.12.78 over a valiant Griffins 0.0.0.

In the game of the round, Ainslie hosted Belconnen at Ainslie Oval. Belconnen had to get a win to get their season back in track and press for the fourth place whilst league leaders Ainslie were undefeated and looking comfortable for the top two position with Riverina. Belconnen started brightly winning the first quarter but that just woke up the angry giant as they slammed four goals in the second quarter and were never headed. The midfield clash was one to saviour but Ainslie's structures looked a bit more superior. Danielle Curico 4 goals for Ainslie and Elise O'Dea 3 goals for Belco.

Riverina had not updated its score with Queanbeyan as at publication.

ADFA with their defence maneuvers have shifted their game against Eastlake to 6 June Wed.

As ADFA's relocated games have skewered the table, it's safe to say Ainslie being undefeated and having beat their close rivals Riverina and Eastlake so far, are this seasons benchmarks. Coaches Dani and Stephen are doing a great job.

In AFL Canberra Youth Girls Round 2 both games were held at Ainslie Oval before the Belconnen vs Ainslie Womens Game. In the first game Tuggeranong took on an in-form Gungahlin Jets team. The Jets were too good for a still developing Hawks team, who kicked their first goal and points for the season. The end score Gungahlin 12.16.88 to Tuggeranong 1.2.8 with Natasha Pilipovic with 4 goals.

In the second game, a very full-strength Ainslie took on Weston Creek and it was the tricolours 12.10.88 to 0.4.4 with Meg Haynes with 4 goals to be the leading goalkicker on 11 for the season.

Next week at Amaroo, it's a top of the table clash between Ainslie and Gungahlin whilst simultaneously cellar-dwellers Weston Creek take on Tuggeranong. Someone could potentially win (or a draw!).

Will definitely need to be revisited before next season. Multiple scoreless or near-scoreless games per round should not be happening.

Personally would wait until the introduction of the 12th club before splitting into two divisions of 6 clubs each.

At this rate Premier Division would have Balmain, Sydney Uni, Newtown, Western Wolves, UNSW Stingrays and either Wollongong (potentially based on this years results) or Southern Power (based on last years results) as the last club.

Second division would look like Southern Power or Wollongong, Auburn, Macquarie University, Penrith, UTS Shamrocks and the new club.

In my fantasy competition, the 6th placed team in Premier Division would automatically go down and the Premiers in 2nd Division would go up automatically. The 5th placed team in Premier Division would have to take on the other Grand Finalist for the right to stay in the Premiership.

(Kind of like the Championship Playoff in the English Premier League, which is seen as the 40 million pound match).

Round 6 action

In game 1, Sydney University travelled to Mona Park to take on the Auburn Tigers. The Bombers hit the straps early with 5 goals from the opening quarter and were never headed from their to kick 18 goals overall winning 18.15.123 to 1.1.7. Top goal scorer Meredith Gray with 6 goals.

In game 2, Newtown also travelled the length of the M4 to go to Greygums Oval to play the Penrith Ramettes. The Breakaways kicked 4 goals from the opening quarter and persisted to kick also 18 goals overall with Krystle Thompson with the double digits with 10 goals. End score Newtown 18.11.119 to 1.0.6.

In game 3, Western Wolves gave the Balmain Dockers a run for their money at Picken Oval, Croydon Oval with the all-conquering Dockers prevailing 7.11.53 to 5.2.32. The Wolves looked to be on a verge of a boilover leading at half-time but the Dockers resolve to never give up meant that they got the head in the game to score 4 goals in the 3rd quarter.

In game 4, the upset of the round occurred with the Macquarie University Warriors 7.5.47 over the Southern Power 2.2.14 at Gwawley Oval, Taren Point. As this was the first win for the Warriors over the Power in three years of football - well done!

In game 5, the Wollongong Saints restored their winning ways over a brave UTS Shamrocks 14.14.98 to 0.0.0 which has been their biggest goal-scoring tally in the Women's Competition in three years. Yvette Lewis 5 goals.

In AFL Canberra Womens Footy
Scores were not fully entered in as per publication deadline but Riverina triumphed over Tuggeranong 7.7.49 over a somewhat disorganised Tuggeranong 2.3.15 (?) on the Saturday twilight game at Greenway.

Queanbeyan 8.17.65 over ANU 1.4.10

In the Youth Girls league - Gungahlin sprung one over league leaders Ainslie to win 6.4.40 to 0.2.2 whilst Weston Creek prevailed in the wooden spoon match over Tuggeranong 5.7.37 to 2.3.15.

Ahhh the beauty of sport. In life, it’s hard to measure progress quickly whereas in sport there is usually a winner or a loser each weekend. Sometimes the underdog gets to beat the topdog.

Round 7 in the Sydney AFL Women’s Competition saw in game 1, the Sydney University Bombers inflict a heavy defeat on the UTS Shamrocks showing academic rivalry in still at hand. Mel Khoury starred with 7 goals as the Bombers won 22.15.147 to 1.1.7 at Sydney University No. 1 Oval.

The Stingrays regained some form at the Village Green winning over the Auburn Tigers 9.13.67 to 3.2.20. Ciska Van Schalwyk slammed home 5 goals for the Stingrays.

Macquarie University Warriors hosted the Balmain Dockers at University Oval but it was a rampant Dockers outfit 17.9.111 to 2.1.13. Belinda Pride with 9 goals to extend her golden boot lead to 51 goals for the season, and will threaten her record of 102 goals in the regular season or 112 overall which was set in 2010.

At North Dalton Park, the Wollongong Saints boosted by Youth Girls coming back from the National Championships in Adelaide stunned the Newtown Breakaways 6.8.44 to 0.2.2. This is the first time the Saints have beaten the Breakaways in three years.

On Sunday the Southern Power hosted the Penrith Rams, it was to be a comprehensive comeback from the Power who had suffered a lost to the Warriors last week. The Power were too good for the Ramettes 15.9.99 to 0.2.2. The Power led from the beginning and five goals in the 3rd quarter sealed the game. Brittany Day was a standout with 7 goals.

Summary: the Saints win over the Breakaways show they are a force to be reckoned with and definitely will be pushing the Western Wolves and the UNSW Stingrays for the fourth spot. Lets see if they can sustain their remarkable progress. In the golden boot race Belinda Pride has scored 51 goals already and if she keeps this pace up, her record of 102 goals in 2010 in the regular season (112 overall) will easily be surpassed.

In AFL Canberra Womens Football Round 7 saw the Ainslie steam-train derailed amongst a windy freezing Greenway Oval at Tuggeranong. The Hawks came out firing from the opening siren and looked more hungrier than Ainslie. Previously the week before the Hawks looked really slow against Riverina but the girls resolved to improve on their efforts and it showed. Ainslie who were undefeated until tonight, didn’t seem to play with their usual fluency and playmakers Holly Cogle and Karina Demant weren’t imposing themselves on the situation as normal. Best of the Hawks was Angela Ballerini (League Best and Fairest, 2011) who was crucial at center half-back. End score Tuggeranong 5.5.35 to Ainslie 1.6.12.

On Sunday 2 matches were played with a postponement from ANU vs Eastlake later in the year.

Belconnen handily defeated ADFA 16.15.111 to 0.0.0 with Kate Chapman with 6 goals and All-Australian Elise O’Dea with 5 goals.

The biggest upset was at Amaroo where the ever-improving Gungahlin Jets defeated last year’s grand finalist Riverina Lions for the first time in five years 6.8.44 to 4.6.30. Susan Cadman with 3 goals. This now pushes Gungahlin into the top 4 spots this year and could definitely challenge for a finals spot based on their form.

In Canberra Youth Girls, Gungahlin continued to set the pace winning 6.14.50 to Weston Creek 3.3.21. In the other game a charitable Ainslie lent some players to Tuggeranong to ensure a game was played and won 16.10.106 to 6.4.40. It looks evident to me that Meg Haynes (Ainslie) looks likely to win her 2nd League Best and Fairest in a row carving up the midfield. I think the quality of Ainslie and Gungahlin will be fighting out for spots 1&2, whilst Weston Creek and Tuggeranong battle for the elimination final placing.

Round 8 of the Sydney Womens AFL saw the biggest upset in it's 12 year history when 8th placed Macquarie University Warriors knocked off the 3rd placed Sydney University on Saturday. With the Bombers only suffering one loss so far to the undefeated Balmain Dockers, the Bombers fielded a semi-experienced lineup and faced a very hungry Warriors side.

On a wet Saturday in Sydney at St Paul's, the Bombers led the first quarter but stalled after that as the Warriors gained confidence on playing at the same skill level and was able to record a famous victory 5.3.33 to 3.5.23.

In game 2, Newtown defeated UNSW.

In game 3, the Western Wolves 11.13.79 to Southern Power 2.4.16 with N.Furlong with 5 goals. Unfortunately it was all over at half time with the Wolves with a 6 goal lead.

In game 4, in the battle of the cellar dwellers between UTS Shamrocks vs newcomer rookies Penrith Ramettes, the desperation for the first 2012 win showed with the Shamrocks the winners today 4.7.31 to 1.3.9.

In game 5, the match of the round between 1st and 2nd place of Wollongong Saints hosting the Balmain Dockers - it was the Dockers who triumphed after trailing at quarter time. Laura Holdsworth and Belinda Pride each with 3 goals. End score 11.11.77 to 4.3.27

With the teams about to have the half year break, it looks like Balmain will be minor premiers and Wollongong with their easier draw looks well placed to come 2nd. Sydney University and Newtown should battle each other for places 3 and 4 although the Wolves could threaten.

In AFL Canberra, it was the Grand Final rematch in Wagga between Eastlake travelling to play Riverina Lions. With Mel Hyland playing her 250th game in NSW/ACT including representative games, the Lions were pumped and triumphed 4.4.28 to 0.3.3. Riverina hit the front at half time and although only scored one point in the second half, it was enough to get over the line.

Ainslie easily defeated 13.14.92 to ADFA 0.0.0. Dani Curico with 5 goals at Ainslie Oval. Tuggeranong also easily defeated Queanbeyan 12.14.86 to 0.0.0 with Kat Ghiradello and Wendy Bennett each with 4 goals. Finally Belconnen also thumped ANU 19.18.132 to 1.5.11. Kate Chapman with 6 goals.

In AFL Youth Girls Canberra, Gungahlin easily accounted for Tuggeranong to lead the competition 18.10.118 to 1.3.9. Ainslie also easily accounted for Weston Creek 11.19.85 to 1.2.8.

Big news in Sydney Womens Footy: Rumours abound that divisionalisation will be introduced in 2013 as the Sydney AFL have accepted the Maroubra Saints into the women's competition as the 12th team. This will be fairly interesting to have another inner-city club and probably make the UNSW-Stingrays's job just a little bit harder.

I think the Saints depending on their numbers may have enough to come mid-table of Division 2. Probably some initial pains getting used to football but i'm sure they'll do okay. I have big wraps on the Ramettes but let's see. In Division 1 depending on retirements, I think Balmain will go three in a row.

Now with divisionalisation, I wonder if there is going to be a flood of some of the more skillful players from Div 2 to Div 1 clubs, searching for greater opportunity representative-wise especially with nationals on again in 2013.

Divisionalization is a must. It's not the perfect answer, but it would improve things considerably.

New clubs like the Ramettes will take years to be competitive with the top line clubs in the competition. And the girls won't hang around that long. So there has to be an effort to get competitive football happening to both keep girls playing and attract new ones.

Once new clubs enter the competition, you don't want them dropping out.

Good on ya's!!
Moorebank have nominated a team for the 2014 season. It will be their first team in the womens comp and it will the the only womens team in the South West region in Sydney. Strong possibility of a well know female athlete from the region playing the odd game.
