Bioshock is the spiritual successor to System Shock due to some developer cross overs. Early 2K Boston stuff before they were 2K. System Shock has a pretty strong cult following and reboots have been asked for years, and when Prey came out it was what everyone was calling System Shock 3.

SS 3 is by Otherside who is reformed from Looking Glass who made the the original System Shock games along with Irrational Games. Ken Levine worked at Irrational and later created Bioshock as a spiritual successor.
