Is that a workout or what? I am serious. I played for an hour tonight at the place where I think they had the 2000 Olympics matches.

Mostly the excercise came from running after the ball though.

A wonderful game. If you're going to be serious, you'll get very fit. Unfortunately, also a game wherein you can quickly achieve the limits of your talents. You need to spend a lot of time to become better than average. If you do so, it's time well spent.

Good fun but how does everyone play?

Do you stand six feet from the table and lash at the ball like its real tennis or do you tiggy touch it right up close hanging over the table?

How do you hold your bat?

Sorry its just got me thinking. :D

Interesting points.

Well I do a bit of both, sometimes I hang back but other times I'm all over the table. I don't mind doing a smash every now and then but for some reason I hardly ever hit the table.

I hold my bat like a tennis raquet. I hate how people hold it with their thumb on one side and fingers on the other. That looks totally ******ed to me. hmmm maybe the pro's hold it like that.

Table Tennis is a great sport. Don't play it often but great for eye co-ordination. I like the ad on TV where the lady is playing against the wall

i've been playing the past year cos a couple mates at work got me to try it. they have training/coaching at MSAC Monday night and Saturday afternoon, and I play B Grade on Tuesday nights. I enjoy the game as it is cheap recreation, at least compared to squash which just gets more and more expensive.

my current bat cost $52, and i have a conventional grip. i never used to put my right index finger on the blade, but now i'm giving that a go because apparently that's what you should do.

i tend to hit mostly top spin, and may step back during a rally. i think a big help is to work on a killer serve.

F Grade champion, and I have a trophy to prove it! ;) A great pursuit, but to get better than average you have to play a lot.

The Hitman

To restrictive. Well it is if you used to (as I did as it happens) a tennis court.

Those piddly little dinky chip chip chip shots.

All wrist most of the time, if your used to swinging your shoulders through a shot it makes it hard to compact yourself down.

I have umpired some A-grade games down at the old South Melbourne tt centre and have to admit they really are very skilful to watch.

I'm your classic counter-puncher. I just hit the ball back, waiting for the other guy to get bored, go for a smash and stuff it up. My friends hate me for it.

Haha Totally the opposite here, I'm always looking for the big Knockout, complete wit the Andy Roddick style forehand.

I have a few choice serves
1.Cut across the ball with backhand = huge outswinger to righthander

2. Cut across the ball with forehand = medium inswinger to righthander

3. Look in one corner and serve a top spinner to the opposite side of the table

4. The drop shot serve where I stand back and rock forward to sneak one over the net.

So when are we going to have the BigFooty.com Table Tennis Championships?

Not much of a player, and haven't played in a while, but I'd love to play!

Perhaps a slightly safer alternative to our footy games? ;)

Who can accomodate us?

Sorry, but in Table Tennis I have everyone here beat

My Step-father, now deceased, was Phillip Anderssen.

3 times Australian singles champion

9 Australian & 30 State titles

11 International titles
Australian Jubilee Champion 1951

Playing coach of Qld, NSW, WA & SA

Player/Captain of 4 Australian teams to World Titles

World touring exhibition partner of Mikael Szabados (former World Champion) for 3 decades

The only Australian player to ever defeat a current World Champion, Victor Barna.

If you would like to see some of Phil's trophies & memorabilia they are displayed by the Southern Table Tennis Association Inc., Wilfred Taylor Reserve, States Road, Morphett Vale, SA 5162,

stta@senet.com.au

Phil would coach me for about 2 hours every night, for several years, I was never going to be anything special, but I did manage to represent South Australia in State competitions. Part of many premiership teams, the one I'm most proud of was part of the winning Australian Secondary Schools Champion team in 1975. We had a great team, John Pierce, Greg Horne, Shelley Horne & me, the first 3 were all Australian championship standard.

So come on, bring it on baby........(sic ;) :D )
