We aren't going to get ripped off this week. I have complete faith in the football club at the trade table.

Magpies, Dons keen on Cat forward
Jake Niall, Stephen Rielly and Michael Gleeson
October 11, 2006

COLLINGWOOD and Essendon have expressed interest in Geelong's forward Steve Johnson, who is willing to entertain a move to either club.

Johnson, whose brilliance has been dimmed by chronic ankle injuries, is contracted for next year, but has told his management that he is amenable to being traded to the right club, with both the Magpies and Bombers having registered an interest in acquiring him.

Johnson's manager, Brad Lloyd, late yesterday confirmed the interest of Collingwood and Essendon and that his client was willing to consider a move.

"Collingwood and Essendon have expressed some interest in Steve," Lloyd said.

"Steve is happy to speak with those clubs. He is contracted for next year and where he plays next year will be his decision. In the end, it may well be (that he stays at) Geelong."

Should either the Bombers or Magpies become more serious about pursuing Johnson, who booted 30 goals in his 15 games this season, they can be counted on to conduct rigorous medical checks, particularly on the ankle problem that he has carried in the past couple of years.

Essendon is probably in a stronger position to trade, given that it holds picks 18 and 20 — the former an extra priority pick — compared with Collingwood's 10 and 28, although the Magpies could acquire another draft choice should they succeed in trading Chris Tarrant to West Coast.

Talks between Collingwood and the Eagles did not progress any further yesterday — the problem being the player the club would have to trade to satisfy the Magpies, in addition to pick 16 — while Fremantle remains the alternative suitor, albeit one Tarrant has not entertained.

Fremantle hopes to work forward Paul Medhurst into a deal also involving Johnson going to Collingwood and Tarrant heading to the Dockers.

The Dockers are considering the possibility of Richmond's Shane Tuck joining them as a part of a trade for the uncontracted Graham Polak. Tuck was one of a number of names raised by the Tigers, who say they need to lose a player — for money reasons — to get Polak. West Australian Mark Coughlan, however, was not one of the options.

Hrmm
Its good to see we are trying to offload Medhurst..

But it doesnt mention anything about NOT handing over two first round draft picks for Tarrant.
Neither does it suggest anything worth while for Polak.

So much for "He is a required player" mantra a day ago!

I'd be pretty happy with Shane Tuck for Polak. One area we really need to improve in is clearances and Tuck seems to be solid in that area. If the tarrant deal falls through I can see us going after Ash Mcgrath in a last minute deal.

Tuck...WTF get out of here, ya got to be kidding big time. Sheeeeeeeeesh where do you guys get off on, you absolutley have no idea.

Tuck is all right ....finds the footy and is a hard working mid field type.

Better than Polly going to the Blues in the PSD.

Rather he stayed but Tuck would suffice.

as a tiger fan, i really dont want tuck to go.

especially for polhack.

tuck plays every game is 190cm and 90kg, and leads the team in clearances and first possessions.

he should not be traded under any circumstances

I don't think Tuck would be too keen to head to Perth, and if he was we would probably have to give up Polak + pick 31 for him. Atleast he is fit unlike Coughlan, although at their peak Coughlan is the superior footballer.

The saints are after Polak too. Hopefully we can get picks 9 and 27 for Polak and pick 13. Then if we trade Medhurst for pick 25 we can either send picks 9 and 25 to the pies for Tarrant or have a shipload of draftpicks.

Gauci I hope you're right.... I do tend towards the "I have a real bad feeling about this" (Yes I have been watching Star Wars with my son ;) ); however with all the talk that's flying around it's hard not to be a bit concerned.

Tarrant in is good (I guess) - too much out and no early draft picks is bad, very bad.
Tuck in is good - straight swap for Polly works okay for me, but would be just as happy if Polly stayed.
Solomon in worries me - 26 year old who isn't rated by the club that missed the wooden spoon by a few "points for".... :(
Medhurst out is a shame, but if it's part of a deal that gets Tarrant, then I can live with it.

2 young players + good draft picks out.
3 older players in + low draft picks...

This makes our list pretty unbalanced, without quality youngsters coming in, plus we need to cut an extra player from the list.... Haines has gone, but Duff takes his place. That means 4 extra delistings so that we can fit Solomon in.

I don't feel entirely comfortbale, but I am hopeful that my misgivings are laid to rest by lunchtime Friday, and that rgauci and kenny prove to be the ones with all the foresight...

I prefer this, as we at least get to keep a couple of 2nd rounders. Also means fewer delistings.

I am taking a deep breath. It is hard work, isn't it?

A 'shipload' of draft picks isn't what we want, it is part of the problem with our trade week. If we trade a player for a late draft pick, we have to use it. Our list management with spots is still tight. I believe we would be aiming for a few players in for the same number of players out, and the three best draft picks we can muster in the washout.

I think the dockers are trying to do the right thing here in trading picks for established players. They realise, which alot of you seem not to, that our window has just opened and we have a chance at a premiership in the next 3-5 years. Young kids are not going to help us as much as guys in thier prime that will make our team stronger for the next couple of years.
Supporters need to notice this as this is trade week is not like any other for Freo as we have never been a contender before as we have always been looking towards the future, well guess what the FUTURE is here now and we need to grab it!!!

If they got Solomon it will make our backline harder, which sometimes it lacks, with him and Grover they all of a sudden get alot tougher. No offence to Johnno and Mundy but they are not tough.
In requiring Solomon getting Tarrant should be easier. If we have Tarrant running arround and in some games we start to struggle at clearances then you have a 190+ midfielder to come in and help that being Pav. The diff from him doin that this year is that you have a quality CHF still leading. So getting Tarrant opens up alot of oppurtunities for us and Pav wont be constantly doubled teamed cos with Tarrant, Murphy, JLo and the wizz running around who are they goin to leave?

Lets stop looking at the future and look to our window of oppotunity and cease it :D

The Medhurst thing is pure speculation I reckon.

I'd be happy to get Tuck, Solomon, lose Polak and keep Medhurst. And miss Tarrant.

Interesting to see the club passed on Coughlan. We're not trade dummies any more.

I tend to agree with those posts about Medhurst being coached out of the game. I've long thought he was better than Tarrant. I think Medhurst has a personality issue with CC, and CC needs to resolve it.

Your club didn't pass on Cogs, they wanted to trade Polak for him, Richmond passed and offered Tuck. As for trade dummies keep your day job, commiserations to your patients. :D

It was suggested over here that Coughlan was first offered for Polak. And we knocked him back. Then it was Tuck.

But I could be wrong. I'm not even a Doctor ... yet.
