Not sure about you, but I've had this chat a few times. One of the Blueseum writers who lives on TC has raised the question and we're going to pick it up.....'Who is the best Blue to never win a Premiership'?

Of course some Clubs have had over 1000 players and only 18-22 premiership players. With Carlton it is a bit different, with 1 in 6 having won a flag. but there are some greats who werent as lucky:

Clover
James
Collis
Kerr (L)
Whitnall
Fevola
Carroll
Blackwell
Wells (J)
Comben
Davey
Warburton
Lappin

Any other nominations? Anyone that you've heard in the same discussion over the years?

The shell of an article is being formed on site with the nominations being worked through in parallel:

Sorry, Thy, for being a smarty-pants - Hicky is a good choice...

Players I have seen, for whom the gods didn't smile:

  1. Peter Motley. (87 and 95 teams)
  2. Andrew Phillips (95) - one of my favourites during our previous famine and would certainly still have been an integral senior player in 1995...
  3. Chris Bond (95) - A late bloomer and AFL captain whose kids may end up starring for Richmond.

Hick played 130 odd games, missed the 98 season and would have played 150 plus. Tough, skilled, played like he was born in Brunswick. Loved him. I reckon nominations would need a bit more than 1 or 2 seasons under their belts, Azul. :)

PS: Motley in the 95 team?

Nick Stevens would have to be included aswell

Stevens
Whitnall
Lappin
Hickmont

I wont say Fevola yet Because he could have had a chance to play in a flag with usm but he threw it away

Hickmott and Lappin were the first that came to mind as well. Loved the way they both went about it.

Saw Hickmott at the Metro nightclub one night in the mid 90s. Disappointing but I got over it.

I'm a little biased but as a huge fan of Whitnall, I cannot go past him as the Carlton player in recent years that deserved and never received a True Premiership. ..

Matty Lappin is another recent player deserving of a Premiership. ..

What a champ, I loved watching him play. Technically he did play in a blues premiership! I remember p dean wrestling him on the boundary line

Craig Davis was another like this - leading goalkicker with 4 in our 79 premiership year BUT for Collingwood. If not for a head injury he may still have been with us on that day

Ah well, at least he got to experience our last premiership first hand and wearing navy blue and white no less. :D

:D

Id like to say that he helped us win the 1995 flag but he was very good for the Cats that day. Some would say he was the only one who won his position (v Christou). Others would say bugger off we smashed them :thumbsu:

What's with Alec, AD?

Alex’s finest hour came in round 9 of 1927, in a vital match against Collingwood at Victoria Park. Carlton simply had to win to stay in finals contention. Apart from goals and behinds, few statistics were kept at that time, however Duncan’s glorious display from the first bounce of the game soon had the press stretching for superlatives. It was generally agreed afterward that he took at least 33 marks for the match, and was singularly responsible for Carlton’s upset victory by 12 points. One scribe wrote; ‘Never was there such a brilliant individual performance. Nothing could stop Duncan. He did not make one mistake for four quarters.’

Indeed, many Collingwood supporters were among the 30,000 spectators who gave Alex a standing ovation as he left the field that day on the shoulders of his Carlton team-mates. Because it featured one of the great individual VFL/AFL performances, the game has since gone down in history as Duncan’s Match.
