Do we have a better side than last year? Considering who has improved, who has retired and who has regressed (or peaked), we should be able to work out the sum total of our regular playing group relative to last year. I know the team is more than the sum of the players, and depth also needs to be considered, but it's still a fun idea to play around with.
Here's how it works:
Assign negative point scores to retired players.
Replace each retired player with a new "regular" player, and assign positive scores.
Score each improving player.
Score each declining player.
Add up the total.
Losses: Kennelly (-4)
Gains: Rohan (+4)
Improvements: Reid (+2), Jetta (+2), Kennedy (+1), Malceski (+1), Parker (+2)
Declines: Bolton (-1), O'Keefe (-1)*, McGlynn (-1), Goodes (-1), Hannebery (-1)
*Injuries are a factor, I know
GRAND TOTAL: +3
That pretty much fits with my gut feeling so far this year.
