Do we have a better side than last year? Considering who has improved, who has retired and who has regressed (or peaked), we should be able to work out the sum total of our regular playing group relative to last year. I know the team is more than the sum of the players, and depth also needs to be considered, but it's still a fun idea to play around with.

Here's how it works:
Assign negative point scores to retired players.
Replace each retired player with a new "regular" player, and assign positive scores.
Score each improving player.
Score each declining player.

Add up the total.

Losses: Kennelly (-4)
Gains: Rohan (+4)
Improvements: Reid (+2), Jetta (+2), Kennedy (+1), Malceski (+1), Parker (+2)
Declines: Bolton (-1), O'Keefe (-1)*, McGlynn (-1), Goodes (-1), Hannebery (-1)
*Injuries are a factor, I know

GRAND TOTAL: +3

That pretty much fits with my gut feeling so far this year.

I don't think you can really measure improvement of a side quantitatively like that. Similarly, you can't look at a list and assess how good a team is. (e.g. 2005 Swans premiership, our list wasn't incredible).

In answer to your question, I do believe our list is better. How much difference that will make to our overall position and whether we can push for top four is an entirely different question.

List is better imo. The improvement in Kennedy, Parker, Jetta, Rohan, Reid, Johnson, Smith etc, is definitely greater than any decline (if any) in Goodes, O'Keefe, Bolton etc.

Hard to do a scoring system as you've done. It depends how we stand relative to the rest of the comp though. We might have improved but 10 other teams might have improved more. So we can only really judge the improvement as we come up against other teams rather than purely looking at the playing list.

And yet my gut tells me we've improved.

KENNELLY -4, LOL... MAYBE -2!!

KENNEDY is at least +2 improvement
i havent seen a drop off in goodes or bolton so far

probably best to wait til half way mark to assess the team properly, but i think we've improved lots.. with more to come

eski; +3 at least? getting more of the ball, might not ever be the player he could"ve been but admire the effort he"s most definitely in out top dozen.

hmm just as an exercise

kennedy
grundy
goodes
bird
smith
richards
hanners
reid
jude
mummy
mcveigh
mal
jetta
rok
jack
lrt

something like that (not ordered)

How can the whole list be improved when the Ressies are shit this year

who cares about the bottom dozen players on the list, its all about the best 22, then the next 8-10 and being injury free(as best can be)...

out of those bottom dozen im sure the club would be happy if only 2 came along in the next few years...

our firsts have improved definately, parker, jetta, kennedy, hanners malceski all playing there best ever footy....

reserves are just there to keep players match fit to an extent, its a joke of a league imo

Even if we had stood still we would be better off than we were last year due to the drop off in Collingwood and - potentially - Geelong, as well as the injuries to West Coast.

The playing field is the most even I've seen it in years.

hanners did have 36 on the weekend, and mal has been awesome for 3 weeks straight, yes he was great early in his career as well.. i think mal is back to his best to be honest, think kennelly retiring has been the catalyst...

Hannebery was awesome in 2010 when he won the Rising Star - to say he is now playing at his best is a pretty bold statement.

Eski was much much much better back in the day, his knees have buggered his career. His form early in the season has little to do with Tiger's retirement.

what a load of crap, kennelly stole his spot last year and killed mals confidence...i honestly think playing kennelly in the finals above mal affected the team.. this year we dont have to carry anyone on sentiment..

now kennelly isn't there, he's got his swagger back and is playing amazing footy... i think he's back to his best personally.. his knees havent stopped him one bit this season..

as for hanners, yes his rising star year was great, but if thats his best season ever i'll eat my hat.. his game on saturday was his best ever in my opinion... i know he had some rippers in 2010, but if they were any better then saturday, i'd be surprised.. thats my opinion anyways..

Might have had something do with doing his ACL in March last year, I dunno, that's just a guess on my part. Mal always goes in this cycle -> Does ACL, uses LARS, recovers to have an iffy year, then guns it the next year -> Does ACL and repeat cycle.

Not saying his Rising Star year was his best ever, that's rot. I'm saying that it's a big call to say that right now he is playing better than that. What about the Hawks game where he got the three votes? Wouldn't have thought he got any on the weekend.

who takes umpires votes seriously, lol judd won dane swans brownlow in 2010, and swan took it off several others last year.. they have no idea, watch kennedy not even go close this year..

lets hope mal stays healthy this year, he's the best kick out of defence by a mile..

Ok let me re-phrase. Hanners was BOG against the Hawks, and was not against Port.

hannebery was great on the weekend, but he has not kicked on as much as I would of liked so far. I think he had rising star hangover, he sometimes gets caught by trying to take a wet week to release his long kick and turns it over. Him and Bird both need to be more aware
