I still think we are in the mix for finals this year, but should we tank the year by playing the kids getting game time into them and set up for next year.

Knowing we will get a good draft pick by tanking we have ablett's pick up our sleave and can poach a good player from another club which will set us up for another 5 year run.

Or bit too early too think that way?

Tanking would not enter the minds of the admin/coaching at GFC. Only us BF posters.

I think it would disrespect the senior players greatly and THAT must be avoided at all costs. I have seen it happen before and it is not classy.

Pick sides on form. Allow senior champions to leave with grace once they lose their edge over youngsters challenging them.

We are in full transition right now and it is going well. Having pigged out on premierships lately I am willing to wait and embrace the different feel having to win every game brings to my barracking.

Horrible, terrible idea how could you even think that way,any how we haven't nominated the Ablett compo pick for this year, next year good Idea your just ahead of your time.By the way people around here can get a bit testy if you use the T word much better to go with list management:D

You say that beautifully. I love how every game is no longer crucial to my wellbeing. We lost to Collingwood. It was disappointing the amount of mistakes they made and the way we lost but meh.....we beat them in the grand final to complete the feast.

I can sit back, watch the games and feel well fed...its a great perspective to have.

And tanking is unnecessary. If we finish say 5 positions lower by throwing games then it doesnt mean you get the better player for doing that. Look at Melbourne. Geelong with their draft skill and club culture is able to pick up a quality player in the teen picks and make them more worthy than a top 5 possible dud pick in my opinion.

God no - we have gone over 25 years without a bottom four finish and over 50 years since we recorded less than the 5 wins necessary to earn a priority pick.

Tanking is not in our DNA

We know all that Jim Boy, but you can't tell me you wouldn't love pick 5 and 6 in Wells hot little hand in 2013.

It would be a 1-step process to ruining our club.

Teach players losing is ok, lose a year of real development alongside senior players, and show all players that they won't be looked after when they reach an arbitrary age limit.

We're rebuilding right now, and we're a fair chance to make the 8 and cause a splash. Let's be Sydney, not Melbourne.

Should red card the OP for even suggesting we consider tanking. :p

Like Jim Boy said, tanking simply isn't in our DNA. What's more, I could see members dropping off in droves if we do, and considering our current debt, that could be disastrous in the long term.

As for the argument of giving Wells picks 5 and 6 to work with, we all know that the guy can pick up gems anywhere in the draft. Just look at our 2011 premiership side - Ling was pick 38, Chappy pick 31, Christensen pick 40, Duncan pick 28, Enright pick 47, J.Hunt pick 44, SJ pick 24, Lonergan pick 23, Stokes pick 61, West pick 31, Wojo pick 24 and Pods in the rookie draft. Half the side was picked up outside the top 20.

Didn't ruin Collingwood (Thomas/Pendlebury 2005) 2010 premiers
Hawthorn (Franklin/Roughead 2004) 2008 premiers

And I'd expect one of them may pick up another this year.

Here here....There would be very few Cat posters who would clearly recall 1973, the last year Geelong had fewer than 28 premiership points in a completed season. Being just 5 y/o then, i have no memory of that, but even in our crappiest seasons of 1977, 1982-83, 86, 1990, 1998-9 and 2003, we'd still have something to cheer about as our side would win a few late season games, or upset a contender. That is Geelong's culture, and seeing how some sides that embraced tanking have come out of it, it will never be part of what Geelong represents.

And as Jim Boy alluded to, 1958 is the last time Geelong won fewer than 5 games.

Plus in Wells, we have a bloke who can pluck stars out of obscurity. The crop of 2009 in Duncan, Menzel, Christensen and Vardy (Cowan as well) is just a taste of his magic.

The draft is a lottery and if Hawthorn had of picked up Tambling instead of Franklin you would say that it was a waste of time doing all that tanking.

Just like when they got Mitch Thorpe instead of Selwood according to the dawks supporters.

Geelong never bottomed out before they won their stretch of Premierships. I cannot see the need to bottom out now.

Besides, Scott will be getting games into the young players anyway.

I am sure that Bundy would be playing if he was available.

Kersten may very well crack a game if he can string a few games together like his last performance in the VFL. Also young players such as Vardy and Cowan would be getting games if they were fit and available.

It is in Scott's plans to build for 2015 or there abouts. He will be looking very closely at the young players coming through.

Terrible terrible idea, just look at the Dees and see what damage it doe to their culture and the kids mindset

op should be carded.

Agreed. Not ever do I want us doing this. I mean yea if players are injured late in the year then you start to look at getting them right for the pre season but as a club I NEVER want us aiming to to get high draft picks. And for the record I never think we will. We have had some very ordinary years and copped some massive hidings while I have been following us but I am proud that we have never been bad enough to be bottom 4. No matter how good our list has been we have always been trying/striving to win every game we play.

No way while we are in it we can still win it.. Although unlikely I don't want to send our old guys off on such a low note..

We are going to drop anyway When our old guys go So we'll do it the natural way, get games into our young guys and have our crack again at 2015...

The club has said they do not believe in tanking and plan to remain around the eight for the rest of Scott's tenure, this was said as recently as last night. Geelong is the only side to never finish bottom under the draft system and this is how it will stay.

End thread.
