With the season now over, its time to look at possible trade targets that AFC might be aiming at. I thinks its fair to say that we are in great need of a marking ruckman. Question is, do we draft one or trade for one????? I think we also need to look at Drafting a young CHF. Trade up in the draft and get a crack at one of 3-4 possibilities. With Bickley gone, Edwards needs to spend more time on the ball, but we need someone of similar style to take his place in defence. My choice is Brent Guerra from Port.

List what you think we need most and who could be recruited to address those needs.

Will be a very interesting trade time.

Like you Stiffy, the area that concerns me most still is the rucks. Biglands is coming along OK, but Clarke just doesn't do enough around the ground. Should be kept as a backup ruckman to Biglands & a targeted player. I would still go after Ottens, but it would probably cost us a bit (perhaps too much). This would allow us to play Biglands in the ruck & us Ottens as a backup who starts in the foward line. We could then also afford to trade Perrie. Also, need to look at drafting a young ruckman, or putting one on the rookie list for the future.

Reckon our midfield is OK, but we need to fast track some of our young talent in Reilly & Schuback. Also, Stiffy may become part of the midfield rotation. Roo, Edwards, Birdman & Shirley had good years, but we need Goody & Macca to be damaging players again. Stinger also had an average year. To make room for the likes of Reilly, we will need to make some tough decisions about trading away some (not all!) of our non-gun midfielders like Bode, Ladhams, Gallagher, Doughty, Mattner.

Reasonably happy with our defence, as hopefully Rutten &/or Parker can fill the big man position we need (particularly with Smart going). Kenny, Benny, Hound, Massie & Torney are all very reliable. Mattner is probably best suited to becoming a HB flanker. What do we do with Crowell?

For the forward line, we probably need to look at recruiting a young KPP, considering Carey & Stevo won't be around for too much longer. We can't bank totally on Hentschel & need other options. This would be our 2nd priority.

Bode & Ladhams - I would have hoped that both these players would've cemented their spots this year, both are good enough but they tend to have their downers. Both were dropped from the side every now and again. Hopefully next year their form will stay at that consistently high level needed.

Gallagher & Doughty - Out of the side a lot more than they were in. Trade bait. But what trade value will they have? If we can't ship them off they may get the chop.

Mattner - I don't think he has much trade value. Still has time on his side to develop as a player.

Even though I dont want him to go, could the trade of Ladhams be worth what were looking for? Out of Mattner, Gallagher and Dogga, he's the one that would have the most value, and may help us bring in the players that we need.

These guys have both lacked consistency & I would throw in Stenglein too. Would be of some trade value. I would lean towards trading Bode, as Ladhams is a better user of the ball.

These guys probably don't have much trade value, but in both their own & club's best interest, one or both should be moved on.

I agree that Mattner would be worth keeping for another year, unless we got a better than expected trade deal.

Didn't Ladhams leave Essendon because he was home sick? I think that would be enough to make 14 clubs hesitant to trade for him.
True.

1 hopefully 2 young ruckmen. Jamar or Brooks could be handy.

Another Key defender or 2. Elevate Parker to take Smarts spot on the flank. Rutten should be groomed for a full back/CHB role.

Midfielders - Reilly and Schuback will be fast tracked. Guerra would be great. What about Chris Hall?

Heard that too. Does the coach want him to go on?

The coach had no problems saying goodbye to old Geelong golden boys, will he do it here? Or will the Football Manager have to do it?

I can't see any reason to get rid of Smart whilst he's in form and only on the veterans list anyway.

Einstein Ayres said tonight on the telly that it's up to Nigel and they're happy for him to continue if he is.

I think you said Dave that Hart is eligible to go on the veterans' list after 31 October, which would give us the old Hart/Smart combo on that list, and free up quite a few dollars on the main list.

Enough room for a KPP or marking ruckman. Excuse me Mr. Ottens, can we talk to you for a moment please???

Yeah, Hart is eligible to go on the vets list for 2004 & from memory Roo can go on it in 2005.

I have no problems with Smart going on, as if anything, he got stronger as the year went on. However, we still need to develop a Rutten or Parker during 2004.

I've been thinking about ruckmen for the AFC.

Glenelg has Clint Dubenicki and Mick Griffiths who are both 200 cm. Granted, neither one has set the world on fire with the Bays but they are both under 21.

I dont think Griffo has been given a fair go by the Bays. He can be inconsistant but they havent got the best out of him. The last Dogs V Tiges match was a good exapmle - Glenelg behind all day and Griffo is on the pine while the bays have no big targets. In the last quarter they throw Griff up forward and hey, they start kicking goals. why wasnt he there sooner?

What does everyone else think of these two? at the very least they should be invited down to pre season training.

New players aside, we have enough non-blooded or little-blooded players on the list that need to be given a chance to "step up" as they say in the classics. The likes of Mattner, Reilly, Schuback, Hentscell, Rutten and even Bock need to be used more. Pqarker needs to be promoted and they need to decide what they will do with Skipworth.

It will be nice to see some young Crows stars getting Norwich Rising Star nominations, like other teams, and even fighting for rookie votes on this board!

The only younger untried player to look at delisting is Smith, we should keep the rest.

TO me Griffiths is a lumbering ruckman that doesn't have the best of coordinations. He is 207 cm from memory but doesn't offer much around the ground. His tapwork also needs some work. Not a very good mark either. Having said that, desperate times call for desperat measures and I would definetly invite him to the pre-season training and have him rookie listed if he is not snatched up before hand.

Clint Dubieniecki was our ruckman at the under 18 championships this year. He was used sparingly with Whitehead. Similar to what we do with Doc and Biglands. He is a good tap ruckman but again doesn't offer a lot around the ground. He is still a bit raw and has plenty of development in him. For me 2nd round pick is the way to go if he is still available. He is only 18 and is a nice size (201 cm / 95 kg). I think he should be worth picking up with our 2nd round pick. Giving a 1st round pick is a bit rich considering its pick 14. However, he might not be available when our next pick comes around (pick 29)

How about rookie listing Matt Illman former 36er who is currently playing reserves with Westies?????

There is one bloke I would move heaven and earth to get and no his name is not Brad Ottens (as great as that would be it is mission impossible) His name is Mark Seaby from the West Coast Eagles. West Coast have about 5 ruckman on their list and with Gardiner and Cox dominating game time and McDougall also pinch hitting in the ruck, some of those youngsters might be up for trade. Mark Seaby is probably the pick of the bunch with Paul Johnson 2nd best.

Seaby will only be 20 next year. Is a potential star ruckman and is a good mark. He offers a lot around the ground and would be a great get for us. WA kids don't often get homesick so we might have a bloke will provide us with 10 years of football. Might cost us a 1st round pick but what the hell, we are throwing it on a young ruckman who clearly has the ability.

I would love to get Guerra from Port but what do we give away as he probably won't come cheap. I don't want to give away draft picks this year unless we are getting a player 21 or under. From memory Guey is 23.

I see Jerome sees a great need for a key backman thats capable on playing on big fellas like Lynch. Personally, I feel that if we can get a good young ruckman who can play senior footy next year (and I believe Seaby is capable of that) then we can sacrfice Biglands to defence and have Clarke and Seaby take the rucking duels.

With the retirement of Bickley I see Johncock as part of our midfield rotation next year. This leaves a spot for a crumbing forward. Enter Jacob Schuback, who I think will be a 200 game player for the AFC. I really believe this kid will be a very good player and can play evrywhere. Will need to add a bit of muscle but doesn't lack mental toughness.

If Smart does decide to play on, I still believe we need to give Hentschel, Rutten and Parker a lot of game time next year.

Stiffy,

I'd like to see Biglands in defence, but he doesnt think like a backman. He is far too loose and gets lead to the ball.

We need to get genuine defenders with footy brains. Parker and Rutten look like they could fit the bill. With Clarke at 30, Biglands needs to take over as our lead ruckman or remain part of the ruck team.

Seaby sounds pretty good. If we could get him, I would be happy.

As for Dubieniecki and Griffiths, if we dont draft them then at least let them have a shot at a rookie list position.

Who is Whitehead? Is he any good?

Johncock in the middle is exactly what we need. I have no doubt he would do everything asked of him this preseason to make it happen.

What about swapping Perrie and Stenglein to Freo for Pavlich ?

Stenglein's form was down this year and Shirley progressed as a tagger. You have to give away some talent to get other talent.

Cheers,

a.j.
