Id rather be last with the group of boys we have now, then first with the turkeys we had for 10+ years before.

If our best 22 doesn't change dramatically over the next 3 years then we are just going to manufacture more of the same from the Laidley/Scott era.

We don't need "dramatic" changes to become a contender.

If the club gets in Kelly and Martin for example, you would need to make a significant change to the midfield structure, if you plan for Ahern, etc to come into the side where are all the current players going to go?

Ziebell would play utility and Dumont would make way. One of the flanker types would make way for Ziebell. Ahern won't be an issue until late next year.

The big question is, if Nick Blakey chooses Sydney, where will John Blakey move to once he is forced to quit his job due to conflict of interest?

Probably St Kilda, he's best mates with Phil Kelly's boy.

We have won 4 games and lost 7, to date, we need significant change.

Even the obvious changes would represent about 10 changes to the best 22. While there are some that are retirees that will make way, there are a fair few positions that wont be.

Lets assume we get Kelly and Martin at the end of the year, for example sake, because we know the club is chasing them and potentially others as well. Also, assume Ahern comes into the midfield next year. What is our midfield going to look like next year? Cunnington, Martin, Kelly, McDonald & Dumont would be our best 6. Would Jacobs or Gibson play in that kind of midfield? If so, who misses out? The next tier of midfielders would be utility/rotational mids like Ziebell, Higgins, Hrovat.

Where does that leave a whole host of players who currently play through the midfield but the club is chasing better options? Then we have a bunch of father/son academy players, we want to get Simpkin in through the middle... just one player in Dal Santo displaced Bastinac and tanked his output and eventually exited the club, we are talking about 4-6 possible displacements in the midfield alone, there will be significant change to our list if that happens.

So the players that make way are two/three big guys (Goldy/Hansen/Waite) plus smaller types in Dumont, Gibson, Atley.

That is not a 'dramatic' overhaul as such but it is a pretty material 'reset' -

- smaller backline with more run and class
- completely new midfield with more run and class
- smaller forward line loaded with class and grunt.
