Took another big scalp today although the opposition handed us a comprehensive belting.

Can't ignore the fact he is now being given one of the hardest jobs in the team and containing the oppositions best midfielder.
Kept Dangerfield to 20 disposals and many of those touches were exactly where the coach would have wanted them to be.

Will be given another tough job next week and I expect him to get Dane Swan but he's helping to fill the Lingy void as well as finding the footy himself.

Great stuff Poodle :thumbsu:

Yep awesome little player, and was it just me or did Danger get a fair chunk of those touches late in the game? the first half he barely touched it....

Maybe harsh but think the good taggers offer something going the other way & he hasn't done that much yet.

that will come in time.

Would you want him to keep Swan to 28 disposals and 1 goal while gathering 16 himself or would you prefer him to gather 20 touches and allow Swan to get 34 + 2 goals?

The way we are at the moment we can't afford to be one short in the midfield because Hunt is sitting on someone especially as he's one of the quicker players, not really a criticism of him though.

no man am not criticizing your opinion but I just reckon he's better focusing entirely on the best player rather than trying to get the pill himself which leads to lapses in defensive pressure.

He is certainly quicker than he does look though...his acceleration once he breaks is exceptional now he needs to add the class required like most of the better players have in abundance.

Smedts, Hunt and Motlop are three fairly quick players we must play whenever we play the quicker teams.
Varcoe will also be huge when he's finally back.

Yeah he was really good again. Dangerfield still had enough touches to be useful for my SC team :p but he had very little impact on the contest considering Adelaide's dominance, Poodle managed to keep his line breaking stuff to a minimum.

One of the real shining lights of the year this kid, hopefully he can keep it up and play all the games from here on in and be in our finals side if we get there.

Well done Poodle.

I thought he was good THunt....great job on Dangerfield.

Oh...and no-one is a bigger fan of Varcoe than me...but I hope people aren't expecting too much of him early on.....he will take time.

Can add another victim to the Poodles doghouse welcome Paddy Dangerfield

Considering the game was a great effort from Taylor to limit Paddy as he did

Poodle is really starting to blossom in the role he's playing at the moment. It's a pity we have nobody else to do the tagging job because i think he would become an absolute asset streaming out of half back or off a wing, considering our apparent lack of pace at the moment.
I love the way this kid goes about his footy, particularly his attack on the ball.:)

Agree about TH. When does Hogan get a go at this tagging?

Maybe they bring him in to predominately play a negating role ala picken, Crowley. The added bonus would be an extra player capable of winning contested ball. I'm unsure as to his form at VFL level though but it may be a thought.

TBH, given that we are getting continually beaten in contested ball and he is the one player more than any other in our vfl side who could assist in that aspect, if we keep struggling in that area up to the bye and he still hasn't played by then, you would have to assume his papers have been stamped.

Not saying that bc of frustration, I'm happy with the kids we have chosen to play but it is unusual we have seen none of Hogan when we are struggling in the middle.

Does not get enough of it. And does not shut down players.
Crazy thread.

We have Guthrie, Hunt, and Smedts all doing ok.
But we are lacking about 30 possessions through those 3 guys alone.

If Hunt is that good why didn't they send him to stop Thompson?

^^

Great job poodle - big job for a kid and large shoes to fill... couple years and opponents won't get a touch...

Listen to Scott's press conference from yesterday, he disagrees with you.

More broadly, he does the job. Danger has had 69 possessions the last 2 weeks and he keeps him to 20 while we are getting routed, with very few of them being damaging? On what definition is that not doing the job? That's a damn sterling job.

Doing the job as well as Ling? No. But he's a kid. For a kid, he's doing a damn fine job at the role (and the more time he has in it, the more his disposal count will improve).

As for not being on Thompson, maybe he should have been, but that's a coaching decision, can't blame that on the player.

come on man........it's about Poodle and not just this past match but the other jobs he has been given throughout the year so far.
Remember the 2nd half on Sam Mitchell?
Simon Black?
Even his role on Cotchin as Cotchin could very well have had an extra 6 or 7 disposals in the 4th quarter which could have made the difference in the end result.

Geelong assigned him the role on Dangerfield because his disposals are a little more damaging than Thompson but as it turned out...Thompson and Adelaide in general could do no wrong.

You need to perhaps try and avoid my posts if you dislike em or take them personally because majority in here believe Hunt has been much improved and I thought another Toast thread was appropriate after such hype was placed on Patty over the week.
Still a terrific up and coming youngster is Dangerfield but I think we got our own underrated gun coming through the system at the moment and after reading Simon Black's opinion's on Poodle, that's not an overstatement.

just to add on what I typed above, Thompson is certainly a lovely user of the footy so not begrudging him or comparing him to Patty but they are two fairly different athletes as Thompson is like a quarterback who finds the wide receiver in Dangerfield ;)

IT was a tactical error not to put a player on Scott Thompson. The coaching staff made an error there imo....

I remember Bomber always put a tag on ST...he's such a general for them.

The criticism of THunt is churlish. He did a wonderful job on Dangerfield, most of whose possessions were not picked up till late in the game and even then weren't particularly damaging.

I was pleased to see Chris Scott acknowledge the excellent effort by Taylor Hunt. It was one of the few positives on the day.

Dont mistake it for criticism of Hunt. It's not.

Go back and find my comments about him last year.
I said something like. "he doesn't just try and play a role, he tries to make a difference".

I just think that he is not doing a good enough job, at the minute.
Sure he is a kid. But if he is in the middle chasing Dangerfield we are effectively down to 3 midfielders. Yes he did a fair job on Danger. But Thompson and Van Berlo went nuts.

As much as a tagger is important in todays footy I think the fact that we just can't win enough of the ball suggests that we need an additional player at the contest who's sole purpose is to win the ball and clear it.

I add in players like Smedts and Guthrie (you could probably add duncan and stringer) because we have far too many players who just aren't getting enough of it.

What can we do about it? Stuff all with regards to personnel. It's who we are for the time being.
Lets remember Ling was a ball winner before he became a tagger AND ball winner.

Maybe it's time to put on some soft tags. i.e. not a specific player. Just a group tag.
Let's work on getting 4 ball winners at the centre bounce.

Not 1 ruckman, 1 tagger, 2 clearing players.
In fact I'd stack the wings with ball winners too and play a 5 man forward line.

And Bobby, it has nothing to do with you making the thread. Relax.

Good post. Taylor is handling the role fairly well given it is really his first seaon doing it. He is still learning. Ling developed in the role over time as I am sure Taylor will.
