Sydney sometimes plays a resting ruckman up forward and Kenny can take on one of those. If not chuck him forward as their backline is not very tall.

Absolutely.

Thats why I would give youngsters big jobs starting with Rutten on Hall. I am pretty sure Truck would be itchig for the challenge. Its bigger test than Neitz was last week but knowing a bit out Ben, he would take it head on.

Stiffy, I'm all for giving our younger players a challenge and testing whether they have it to play at AFL level, but that match up just wouldn't work.

Barry Hall is probably one of the fastest tall forwards currently playing. His pace at times can match that of a midfielder. Hence the reason many of his goals come from leading marks.

I think everyone has now realised Rutten has worked on his pace, but it just wouldn't work on Hall. If this was the matchup, I'm predicting Hall would get 4+ goals, and that's not going to help Rutten's confidence.

I'm all for Rutten in defence though, just not on Hall.

Check my post in the "Talking Tactics: Barry Hall" thread. Thats how Bassett has stopped him in the past and thats how Rutten can also stop him ;)

You do make a fair point Stiff, but playing in front of those faster than you requires genuine experience in order to achieve success.

Do you feel the need to play Ruts on Hall, at the risk of him getting carved up and feeling like a stray dog at the end of the game?

Pretty happy with that lineup, we play well at the small SCG and am expecting us to play with the same intesisty as we did against the Demons;) I would give Rutten first crack at Hall, he played well on Neitz, my only concern on this matchup would be Halls pace, and hope Rutten and keep up with him, if it doesnt go well I would stick McGregor on Hall. I have a good feeling about this game..............Crows by 22 pts:D :D :D :D :D

Enjoy the game DaveW:D :D :D :D :D

Every defender gets carved up from time to time. It's a learning experience.

At least we have up to 3 options for Hall (Rutten, Biglands, Bassett). Compare that to last year's semi-final when we played Perrie on Lynch for 3.5 quarters.

Rutten is a confident kid that doesn't drop the ball. Tell me how is he going to get the experience if he is not given the job?????? Playing on a 3rd tall or something like that will not give him the experience to play on someone like Hall.

Rutten has a footy brain and he is smart enough to play Hall that way. I think he can do it if he approaches it in the right manner. Shows character than Ben didn't let down after he had 2 quick goals kicked on him.

What happened to "never going to make it because he's too slow";)

I agree with your comments though, however IMO Hall has a big motor and is quite agile. The concern I have with Rutten is his agility and motor (not his pace which I have never had a real concern over;) )

Do you think he can compete in these areas?
Personally I would go with Mcgregor, has the motor, agility and experience to go with who I think is their most important player.

Exactly. Its how they learn. You learn more from playing on someone and gatting spanked than playing and winning your position.

Good to hear that Craigy is planning to give Rutten the job. There are players that you have to nurse through and bring them in slowly. Those are the confidence players (ie Hentschel, Perrie etc) and then there are players that take the challenge and if they get spanked they don't drop thier head, they just move on. One of those players is Rutten.

We have to find out if he is up to it or not and there is no better way to find that out than throwing him ti the deep end.

After 2 wins its becoming very obvious that people have forgotten what the next 8 weeks are all about. They all want to win at all costs. I don't. I want to find out more about our list and if we win doing that then GREAT. Now that we have won 2 in a row everyone is coming up with the match ups that they would have if they were playing off in the grand final. This is the sort of attitude that got us in deep **** to start of with.

If we are playing where the sole objective is to win THEN I would play Bassett on Hall as he has a fantastic record on him. However we are NOT. So its in clubs best interest for the long term anyway to give big jobs to youngsters to see what they are made of. No point playing Rutten on a 3rd tall so he gets cheap kicks and we rave on about how good he was because he got X amount of kicks and used them well.

Give Rutten the job and if he can't keep up with Hall then make the move. Don't be conservative.

Remember the objective of last 8 games is to find out more about our list not if we can beat teams when we come out with best match ups and tactics. This is a prolonged pre-season for us and if we approach it in any other manner we will struggle for longer than neccessary.

Couldn't agree more - this is not the time to nurse these players through.

Find out - can they? can't they?

Rutten to stand Hall: Craig

Adelaide youngster Ben Rutten will be entrusted with the initial responsibility of standing Sydney full forward Barry Hall in Saturday night's match at the SCG.

In just his fourth AFL appearance, including his second this year, Rutten, 21 and a formidable 190 centimetres, kept Melbourne captain/full forward David Neitz to only two goals at AAMI Stadium last Sunday.

Nathan Bassett has had reasonable success on Hall in previous matches, but Adelaide's decision to use Rutten, with Bassett alongside him, is in keeping with its experimental and development policy for next season.

When asked who would stand Hall, Craig said: "It gets back to a bit of the agenda the club conveyed to me a couple of weeks ago.

"The obvious choice there (at full back) is Nathan Bassett, just as probably the obvious choice last week (on Neitz) was Nathan Bassett, and we went with Ben Rutten.

"Now you don't have to be a rocket science to know that we'll go with Ben Rutten again. We're happy to declare that, and I think that's good for Ben to have to experience a very, very good player in the AFL - a slightly different player to David Neitz in the way he goes about it.

"Plus, we have an obligation to Nathan to find this big defender we're talking about, so Nathan can go about his business in a different area and play some very good footy.

"We know Nathan has got a pretty good record on Hall, so we're not saying we won't play him there (at some stage), but I think we have an obligation to find other people to do that job."

On midfielder James Gallagher playing his eighth match for the season (as a replacement for the injured Matthew Bode), Craig said: "He's played in Sydney before. He's played some good footy up there. So I see it as an opportunity for James Gallagher to demonstrate quite clearly that's he's good enough to play AFL footy.

"That doesn't mean he has to be best on ground. It just means the way he goes about his footy and his preparation. For those guys (including tall forward Scott Stevens, who has replaced the injured Trent Hentschel), it's their responsibility to show the match committee and the management of the club that they have the capacity to prepare and perform."

Craig described the Swans as 'a huge test' for the Crows.

"Sydney have played some good footy," he said. "They've won some close games, which suggests they've got some real competitive spirit as a footy club and some resilience in their playing group.

"And they play a style of footy where they're always on the march and trying to score. Obviously their position (seventh) on the table now reflects the way they play. So it's a huge test for us to go up there and try to win."

Does Adelaide try to shut down the Swans or engage in a shootout?

"I think it's a bit of both," Craig said. "I think there are always going to be those ebbs and flows in a game. We certainly don't want to be seen as a side that's always looking for shootouts or just looking to shut people down.

"In terms of your competition, it's got to be about an attacking competition, a one-on-one competition and a defensive-type competition. Playing the game is all about that, so hopefully our club can develop in all those areas."

Asked how the Crows could replicate the same spirit as they had in beating the Demons by 12 goals, Craig said: "I haven't gone about that at all. I've said recently and I'll continue to say it - our playing group over this year, for a whole range of reasons, have demonstrated to our footy club and to me that they've got some fibre and character.

"I know we all aim for what we saw last week against Melbourne. They're not robots but I know they understand that's the type of intensity we always want to try to play at. There'll be quarters and games where we do reach that and others where we don't achieve that. So that's not an issue for me. I know it's there in the players."

In hindsight, that's correct.

I just realised what two rare consecutive wins can do to us supporters. ;)

It's all about 2005, and looking at the article above I'm very glad that Craig has put his future job on the line to develop our kids for the years ahead.

It'll be interesting to see how Ruts goes on Hall, but in the end it's all about giving him experience at the top level and on a top opponent.

Neil Craig has taken your advice, Stiffy.

We know that Michaelangelo Rucci reads this board.

The burning question now is, does Neil Craig?? :p
