You team listed here also probably doesn't have enough midfield depth on the bench!

playaplaya, you have not mentioned Clinton Young, even in your outs. Clint was mentioned for his good game against the Tigers by Clarko in his post-match interview. Whenever Alastair mentions Youngie you can back it in he will be in the 22 for the next game .... deservedly so. I will write more about Clint's style in an upcoming post as he reminds me of a past player of one of our great eras.

Spot on Gary, and against the saints we need a good mix of body size, strength and speed. Tough job for the selectors and there is plenty in the 2's, including an improving Bailey. Not sure Vandenberg is the best option but he is Captain.
By the way has anyone noticed the good form of Rory Kirkby at Glenelg? I thought he had a bit to offer in the longer term.Would like to see him on the list to add to the pressure on the forwards.

Ins: Croad, Crawford, Everitt, Guerra, Vandenberg. All work up starts for mine.

Outs: McGlynn (unlucky),
Taylor (tried hard but no unlucky),
Ries (good game but that's where he stands),
Brennan (same again, kicking isn't good enough, someone has to go), Birchall/Murphy... I can't make the call here. I like Murphy but Birchall had a really good game. Too close to call

Harsh to drop the young guys, but if to be truthful we did lose 6 in a row before the Tigers game, we were horrible before then, and think we need to bring in experience after the break.

Goin on what Todd viney wrote in his weekly article I'd reckon Birch is a certainty to stay in the team. Youngy also. Murphy..yes.
I'd reckon Benny McGlynn, Ries, Taylor will get given some time at Box Hill.
I wouldn't be surprised to see Bateman omitted. Big call, but I think Murphy and Birch showed enough to keep there spots and Brennan probably needs to get another go just so Clarko can make a call on his future.

I think cschreuder61 is way off track, we lost 6 games in a row when the majority of those blokes played. Disagree with Brennan, we need other forwards to kick goals, Willo's efforts lately very ordinary (no second efforts) Brennan provides this, he belted J Bowden who is tipped again to win the Tigers F&B
I think Spida even against his old team should sit in Boxhill and seriously consider why he is even with us & Guerra should also sit in the McGoo's as his discipline was again in question - particularly when the so-called experience was required, I didn't see it...KEEP THE YOUNGSTERS WHO PROVIDE TICKER.....

With those big 5 coming back, are they all certainties? Is Croad 100%?

Also, any chance Hodge would get an extended break for his hand injury?

Breaks your heart to see kids who have been busting their guts get replaced just like that. Especially guys like Birchall and Murphy. I think McGlynn deserves a spot after having to fill the mammoth gap of Crawford and VDB with little support. He's provided some real spark and his skills are serviceable. Like to see Murphy get another run as well, hard to split him and Birch.

HaHa it is a tough job for the selectors next week! I dont envy them at all! However I love it that we are debating this because only a couple of weeks ago we wouldn't think twice about including those 5 players. Good to see that the kids have stepped up and making it hard to drop them! Wont hurt a few of the senior players to feel the pinch from these kids as well! Exciting times!

It may be harsh to have those kids sit out after such a performance last week, but nobody could seriously expect us to leave out Croad, Crawford, Everitt, Guerra, & Vandenberg, could they?
We were at full strength at the start of the year, and aside from Collingwood we were pretty much firing on all cylinders.

Think we could be a show for this one. I've got my ticket! :thumbsu:

I think McGlynn needs to go back to Box Hill and work on his kicking, two crucial misses on the weekend, and a couple of ground level fumbles where the opposition took the ball away too easily soured his game a little. I would expect him back though in another month or so
Taylor was serviceable but Spider should come back in.
Ries out, although he played well, it was nothing that Crawford or couldn't do on a very average day.
Guerra and Vandenberg (yes somewhat contiversial I know !) to play at Box Hill and earn their spots, 4-5 weeks out is a long time and would be unfair on Murphy and Birchall who did nothing wrong.
Williams to start on the bench until halfway through the second quarter, he needs a bit hunger in his game. Forward line of Croad Dixon Franklin and Brennan isn't the worst to start with ?

Good post, I agree with the most. Is it worth giving Crawf one more to make sure he is 100%?He came back to early last time.

Vanda and Guerra is a good call, They let the team down big time and missing another week would show undisiplined acts will not be accepted.
During the week off i would have Willo running at tackling bags and doing high intensity work.

Leave our captain in the reserves? Are you insane? Richie got a very, very rough deal from the tribunal and his record of discipline is pretty good. Bring him back!

Maybe harsh, but it would be as harsh to drop Birchall or Murphy after one game back and doing so well. Vandenberg hasn't played since the 19th of May, so its basically 6 weeks without match practice, and think how much it may steel all the others into working their buts off against the saints thinking that they are keeping the captain out of the side, even if it's only for a week. Don't get me wrong I am a fan of our skipper, but the overall message it would send could be of greater benefit in the long term:D

When we won 4 of our first 5 we had basically our full strength sides... its when we started losing players like Croad, Jacobs and Crawford that our depth was shown up.

Its great to get a win on the weekend, but the Tigers didn't turn up to play and was a good team effort on our part. Don't read too much into it, if we play a team of kids against the Saints we'll pay for it. Birchall, Brennan, McGlynn and Murphy all showed pretty good signs on the weekend, but having all in at once is still a liability IMO.

Everitt, Crawford, Croad, would strengthen our side dramatically. Vanders in by default whether you agree with it or not (think Vanders has actually been pretty good this year), and Guerra had some excellent games before getting injured. They still get preference and we were winning with those guys all in the side.

Impossible to go past CS's changes here.

* only thing could be changed is Barker out with hand injury. Certainly well bandaged the other day and did not train?

Vanders will definately play. Trained very well last Wednesday, looks to be in "hard nut" sort of mood..... put the body on the line type attitude.

Ries. Perfect situation for him. Comes in when the good players are injured, we bring an 80 game player with experience and he goes out when the good players return.

Shame about Taylor but I think Spida will be ready to show something, at least to his old club and coach, play him.

Out of Birchall & Murphy. For me, Murphy. We've seen a bit of Birchall and I think we all agree can play a bit and has a future. Wont hurt him playing BH for a game or 2 and as a rookie has a 2 year contract, plenty of time.

Murphy on the other hand is in make or break mode and we need to see if he can make it at the elite level. Must admit I was impressed with what I saw on the TV on the weekend especially after he left me "less than impressed" in his 1st AFL game in Rd 22 v Swans. His body looks stronger and harder than a Birchall and should/ could be able to fill the 3rd tall defender roll that Jacobs had.

I say to Hawks selectors, stay the course, we've done well so far this year with 5 wins, BUT are we seriously going to win the 2006 flag..... NO. So lets keep the development and drive for 2008-2012 going by playing Murphy.

Spyda In - Tailor Out
Crawf In - McGlynn Out
Vanders In - Ries Out
Guerra Maybe In - Maybe Birch Out
Croady In, Maybe Barks out injured, if not Murph may go.

The Sainters are not setting the world on fire and hopefully the rest will be of more value to us than them.

Nick Ries is not a running midfielder..
Shane Crawford is on his decline(probably wont be around in two years).
Tim Clarke while he can run and carry the ball is not the sort of player than can really hurt a team. I'll give you this one though. so thats one.
Chance Bateman has been slightly down on form, his kicking has been ordinary and at times hes been well beaten by his opponents this year. Daniel Wells for one. He is a running midfielder but once again not one that is hurting the opposition at the moment.
Clinton Young is a young wingman, runs and carries the ball and has a long penetrating kick.
So thats three out of five that you mentioned, we're hardly chock full of running midfielders, especially ones who can create pressure on backlines with hard running and penetrating kicks. Hodge obviously can do this, but he's not the quickest runner out there, same with Lewis and Mitchell.
We need some more quicks coming thru the guts and delivering with precision, so why shouldn't Kane get a go, why not see what he's got?

Agree RustyHawk about Murphy. Think he offers more in the air with Jacobs out than Birchall, even though no one can question his form from a first year player. If the rising star is about consistancy, then Birchall should be another half decent game away from a nomination, but still.. think Murphy should get given another go for team balance and because he deserves the opportunity.

Galon, think you are definately on the right track about our problem with outside running mids who can use the ball. There is no coinicidence that we struggle on Telstra Dome considering the problems we have with guys who can finish off good inside work. We play well at SS, York Park etc where we can scrap and create contests, but against the Saints it'll be more possesion and hitting targets sort of a game.

Bateman has been the biggest let down in that regard, I rated him really highly. I think he's struggling with the new rule changes and the stamina required to run out a game at the moment. I'm sure he'll come back hard for the second half of the season.

I disagree about crawf. Still reckon he could have up to three seasons left in him, especially if we start climbing the ladder over the next year or two, you'll see what he still has to offer.

Young is just what we needed and a great rookie selection, and we have Ellis, Muston, Birchall still to develop into that outside type player so at least we have them on our list developing... they come on quicker than the bigger lads too so we may see some improvement in this area as soon as next year.

On Kane..... think he should get given a couple more opportunities.... he's worked hard and has shown a few signs... just lacks the polish IMO at the moment... unsure on him, but happy for him to get another a go.. probably not this weekend though.
