No,no, just 'cause he kicked a goal doesn't mean he played well. Thornton:
  • missed five tackles,
  • did not complete a single tackle in the second half,
  • committed 3 clangers in the second half,
  • had a kicking efficiency of 21%,
  • spent large chunks of the game on the bench,
  • hung off his man like the Swans had something contagious,
  • was left to run by himself by the Swans because they wanted him to have the ball so he'd turn it over, and
  • didn't hurt us with his turnovers only because he was nin the forward line.
Bring in DeBoer, Walters, Clarke or even Hally. Thornthon is a hack.
Where do you get those efficiency stats from?

Well clearly you were watching for the negative... do you have any positive thoughts?? :)

Not about Thornton - hack of the highest order who should never play for Freo again. Rather play with 21 than have him in our side.

Well, after I somehow fell into the uneviable role of having to defend the inclusion of Scott Thornton, I took a keen interest in his game tonight.
He played ok. Set up at least 3 goals that I recall, and got one himself. And from a pass from Murph, no less!
Interesting to see him played in the forward half, too - a position I guess where his defensive deficiencies are less exposed...
Puts us in an awkward situation. He really didn't do anything to warrant being dropped next week.

No, he did not set up a single goal (watch the replay, goal by goal - he turned it over twice inside our 50m, and did nothing on three occasions with gift handballs from Haydos, which should have been at least scoring shots).

He also missed critical tackles, failed to chase out of our 50m, and refused to shepherd on 6 different attacks by Hayden, Ibbo and Hinkley. Time to go Thornton, never to return.

Sorry you are wrong there.

He set up at least one to Murph/

The Chapmpion data stats feed for one of the fantasy footbal sites I'm registered to - can't mention the game or I'll get carded, but rhymes with BlooperRoach. If you pay for the site membership & registration you get more stats I think. Basically all feeds into the different stats the AFL puts out each week, though I still can't find the 'official' list of AFL endorsed stats - every website seems to have slightly different extra stats. The TV commentators here in the NSW telecast (Pickering and Slapovich) were talking about Mundy's kicking efficiency from the game against the Sainters, so they must use the same stats for at least the kicking efficiency.

Sorry, I don't agree - if it is the one I'm thinking of, Haydos did the hard work to get it out of the pack, beat 3 defenders, flicked it to Thornton, who kicked it long - it went off hands and Murphys kicked it through off the ground. Happy to be proved wrong if someone can post the reference to the kick though. At most it was one, and IMHO all he did was kick the ball straight twice - hardly a praise worthy achievement.

The entire team played well tonight. We had an intensity which had been missing for the past 4 weeks.

So why the need to still be critical about 1 particular player?

After all the invective that the poor bloke got here over the last couple of days, I was really watching his game tonight, and I clearly recall 3 occasions where he had the last kick prior to a team mate goaling. Now sure, perhaps that team mate had to do a bit of work before goaling and maybe Thornton's pass may not have been rated as a statistical "goal assist" on some fantasy footy website, but seriously, Thornton was ok tonight. Not a blinder, but he certainly wasn't a hindrance to the team.

Chill out. We just had a win. We played proper Aussie Rules footy and won an entertaining high scoring free-flowing game. :thumbsu:

I really do hope Deboer and Walters and Clarke played well this weekend and force their way into the team real soon. And I hope it is at the expense of Thornton and Murph to be honest. If those kids can force their way into a team that played like it did tonight, then we'll know we're really heading in the right direction.

According to the AFL website, Thornton had 0 clangers for the match and had a disposal efficiency of 73%. Now I thought Thornton was quite good last night, so I'm going to trust those stats. You clearly have a preconceived opinion on Thornton to the point where you can't judge him objectively, so I doubt you will trust those stats. Thornton did enough to earn himself another match, the test will be how it backs up this performance though.

On a side note, Clayton Hinkley had 14 touches at 93%. Who said my buddy has disposal problems?
