It's been brewing all season. While we've clamoured for the dumping of Shaw, Richards has gone about his business in his typical unassuming way, mostly under the radar, and even his **** ups have been masked by the shocking utter incompetence of Shaw and Rampe at times.

This can't happen any more. We need a new CHB and we need one as soon as we can bloody well get one out on the park.

He's lost most of the pace he had circa 2012 that made him the best CHB in the league, a fair bit of his strength and his ability to read the ball at a basic football level. Throw in the pathetic body work he's shown all year and we've got one of the worst CHBs going around. How I'd love to see Patful instead of this spud playing for us.

The trade bans ****ed us, no doubt. We can't even get anyone half-decent either. Hopefully Alir Alir can come along and replace Richards for at least a year until we can upgrade.

I thought Shaw was bad, but Richards is just flat out shit.

Dw we'll just replace him at the end of the year with our brilliant trading and drafting skills! Oh wait...

He is being pushed away and out of a marking contest really easily. He is also very slow off the mark these days as well which makes marking on the lead really easy for his opponent.
Last 3 games when Richards has been diabolical they've shifted Rampe on to his man and Rampe has done really well.

Its same as Shaw we are asking great warriors of the club to do what they can no longer do

Richards could be a third tall defender type still, hes been ok

But diving for frees yuck

Reid should be a permanent key defender and it wouldnt hurt while people are injured to see what XR or Aliir can do or abe davis?

The worry is that he might not be diving for frees. He might just no longer have the strength to hold position in one on one contests.

Generally we currently go
Grundy, richards, rampe as our three talls imo

I think it needs to be

Grundy, reid, and either richards (less pressure may help) or a youngster

I think so as well. It is time Grundy steps up and takes the number 1 forward. I personally would rather go with a young player over Richards but I suspect Longmire won't be dropping Richards.

Grundy generally does take the best this year, but even super ideal world he is your number 2

Against some we can probably get away with laidler or rampe as third tall

But reid should stay there on an opponent he is such a nice mark

Mcveigh also must stay back

Defence was so much better with him there and shaw out of the way late

I'm glad he's ok, never like to see a player stretchered off. Great servant of the club, in decline now but we don't have anyone else. Pretty confident in Reid's ability to play in defence when required.

Reid is required to be the CHB right now imo

I don't think he dove in that contest. He just hadn't set himself so got toppled easily. He hadn't set himself because he's out of form and he knows it, so he's uncertain and feeling for body contact.

We wrote off Goodes at the start of the year, and look how that turned out. Don't get me wrong, Teddy's form is a worry, but saying he's cooked is premature.

What are peoples thoughts on Tayte Pears as a replacement in the off season? We clearly have to make some sort of move if we want to be in premiership contention next year.

With where the Essendon ASADA shit is right now, I wouldn't go near any Bombers players.

Ted was certainly out-pointed haplessly a number of times last night but his teammates did little to help him out. A couple of those really long, high kicks to enter our defensive 50 came after plenty of time for defenders/midfielders to flood into defence. And yet they ended up with only Ted and his opponent contesting the mark in isolation. A bunch of other teammates were present but stagnant and stuck on the ground. Not willing to go off their opponents and kill the ball, something they normally do automatically. Not sure how that happens and I'm sure Longmire will be getting into them for that.

Our defence has always worked as a greater whole than each defender as a one-on-one defender. We've never had a huge number of great one-on-one defenders and Ted needed help there.

As a replacement for Richards' role of being easily outmarked by key forwards? He could definitely fill that spot. He's neither big enough nor good enough to be our key position defender. Has been playing mostly as a forward in the VFL in any event.
