Society/Culture : Terrible news: 18,000 children confirmed dead today

BTW, I did some research and this thread should be renamed.

Should be "Great news, 15,750 children lived today who wouldn't have in 1990".

Seems CountryRace neglected to mention something in trying to make everyone seem evil by pretending that nobody is doing anything.

The press release that announced 18,000 children dying made a big point about the progress that has been made and using that to urge people to keep making progress.

Since 1990, the under-5 mortality rate has dropped from 90 per 1000 to 48 per 1000.

True, it seems the target set in 1990 will be missed (a 2/3 drop by 2015), but such targets are generally pretty optimistic anyway.

"Yes, we should celebrate the progress," Anthony Lake, UNICEF executive director, said in a press release. "But how can we celebrate when there is so much more to do before we reach the goal? And we can speed up the progress -- we know how, but we need to act with a renewed sense of urgency."

What do you propose I do?

Give your money, dedicate your time to getting out and collecting more (either through a current charity or setup your own), find/support credible* lobby groups to get governments (here and elsewhere) to do more.

Posting on a web forum is as likely to actually make a difference as yelling at clouds.

* - Sorry, but nobody with any power/influence will listen to the Green Left, conspiracy nutters alliance (well, maybe the ABC, but you'd just be preaching to the choir there so it's unlikely to achieve anything).

Hi , thanks for reply

Are you serious or sarcastic?

Are you serious or sarcastic?

That you should actually do something rather than whining about how things aren't improving fast enough for you? (while completely leaving aside how they have improved markedly)

Yeah, that's serious.

Yeah, that's serious.

In what ways is the situation improving?

A) Last years 85 peoe owned half the wealth on wealth. It is now 80. (Oxfam)

B) http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threa...ven-though-total-wealth-is-20-higher.1084978/
The median human is 14% poorer today than they were in 2007, even though total wealth is 20% higher

C) I am unsure if the number of kids that die per day for preventable reasonis dropping. I doubt it. Last I reddit s 18000 p day.

For the sake of clairity of accept overpopulation is a real worry. However, as a species, I didn't know we had decided to deal with it in this manner

It is getting better. Even the leftist paper - Huffington post admits it.

Yes, it's just 20/000 kids dying p day.

Oh, what a bore. Pinko gobshyte

How bout those Muslims, right. Gee lets make some more threads on how naughty they are

and yet when I refer to the over 15,000 who are alive each day due to the measure we've already been taking, and how the trend is massively on the improve, you ignore it because it doesn't fit your "wont somebody think of the children"/"capitalists suck"/"Jews are the root of all evil" melodrama.

Just your typical Socialist Alliance youth uni student.

Move along.

nah, i think that does the socialist alliance a disservice (i also doubt he's a uni student). the SA kids i grew up with were at least well-read, and analysed things from a lefty perspective, not a conspiratard moronic i believe everything i read on the internet perspective. of course, this was before the net became the massive research tool it is now.
