BTW, I did some research and this thread should be renamed.
Should be "Great news, 15,750 children lived today who wouldn't have in 1990".
Seems CountryRace neglected to mention something in trying to make everyone seem evil by pretending that nobody is doing anything.
The press release that announced 18,000 children dying made a big point about the progress that has been made and using that to urge people to keep making progress.
Since 1990, the under-5 mortality rate has dropped from 90 per 1000 to 48 per 1000.
True, it seems the target set in 1990 will be missed (a 2/3 drop by 2015), but such targets are generally pretty optimistic anyway.
"Yes, we should celebrate the progress," Anthony Lake, UNICEF executive director, said in a press release. "But how can we celebrate when there is so much more to do before we reach the goal? And we can speed up the progress -- we know how, but we need to act with a renewed sense of urgency."
