I'm pretty sure there are 2 spots left on the senior list and got told there was the other day also. So who do people think will take the last 2 senior spots? I would say Pettard and Lonergan. I would say Orren but unless Vickery or Maric go down with a LTI, Then I can't see him being upgraded. The other 2 played a fair bit of senior footy last year and could be a role player straight away.

oren and lonergan i think if your talking about rookie upgrades.

Agree Luke.
Think it will be Petterd and Lonergan.
Good replacements for King and Foley IMO, who are both extremely injury prone.
Petterd is a tackling machine and can play that role in our side. (Provided he can stay fit himself, of course)
Stephenson no chance.
Not with Maric and Vickery both fit.

OK for one for the experts. Is it compulsory we fill the 2 spots before the start of the season? Or can we hold one back and keep it up our sleeve?

If it is not compulsory, I know what I would be doing if I were in the brains trust.

its use it or lose them. If we don't promote, later promotions can only be due to injury

ok and i dont want to jinx anyone, if say one of the rookies in the race, goes down with a long term injury between now and the deadline, can we promote them and still have it up our sleeve?
And while you are it, what if the aliens take the car? ;)

I've seen this said a bit but I'm not sure it is the case actually.
His average tackles per game over the past few years are 2.8 in 2012, 3.9 in 2011 & 3.5 in 2010.
The 3.9 in 2011 also include one freak game (against us ) where he is credited with 14 tackles!

Get a proper group of coaches into him and he'll be right.

You would assume it would be 2 of Stephenson, Petterd or Lonergan - I think the best performed of the 3 in pre season will be a huge decider, as will if there are injuries to the players each of these guys are to provide cover for (Petterd for King/Knights/A.Edwards)(Lonergan for Foley/Jackson/Tuck) or (Stephenson for Maric/Vickery/Derickx/McBean) - whichever of these areas is lacking in depth or quality most will probably get strengthened by elevating a player in that position.

Coaches will assess the players and list over pre season and make the call on which 2 they will elevate.

In saying that though, I hope they keep an open mind and if one of the younger guys like Darrou, Verrier or Williams sets the track alight and shows some real talent in the NAB cup comp, that they are considered for elevation (if the coaches think they can make the step up).

Interesting point Roachy.

Maybe the fact he was averaging between 3-4 tackles a game playing for a bruise free footy team like Melbourne (under Bailey) is why people rate him as a good tackler? Certainly would stand out next to the 20 odd soft players out there. :thumbsu:

Yeah... good point!
Also, certainly early in his career there might have been some veiled implication that to tackle might lead to turnovers which might lead to Melbourne goals! ;)

Lonergan for me, clear cut as foley wont be ready until after round 1. (plus we need to smash carazzo)

the other pick isnt so certain, but i'd say RP (will depend on fitness) as he can play that lead up or defensive forward.

orren might only get a look in if one of ivvy or vicks goes down. (but apparently griff will be playing the fwd/ruck role).

I dont think cam will get a game this year but the kid looks promising. good height, weight, skills and he plays in a position which will soon need filling (midfield)

Maybe that means we can promote three? If Foley were to be placed on the LTI list in say mid Feb that means we could promote two rookies into the open spots spots and a third one for the two or three rounds Foley will miss at the start of the season? (I'm assuming the limit is 8 weeks not 8 H&A rounds?)

not sure if its 8 weeks or 8 home and away rounds. I do not think we can put him on the injury list prior to the season as that'd be a massive loop hole. logic says the 8 weeks have to be during the HA rounds, which would mean no foley til round 9:eek:

and that wont be happening

yep, when Foley went down again last year we really missed him as no1 else could cover him. Grimes & Vickery hurt us for the same reason as well.

Wondering if we promised Orren a nominated rookie spot onto the main list given his previous comments about rookie salary not being worth it for him. Either we are paying him more than the minimum or we will put him on the main list prior to the start of the season.

Would like it to be based of preseason form though, I'm sure it mostly will be as it will keep them all competitive.

not sure how it's going to work, maybe he accepted as it was take that or find something else to do? tho he has said that the job he could do outside footy would earn him more $

I believe this may be incorrect. I remember reading somewhere that clubs that choose to play two short on the senior list are entitled to promote one player prior to round one and the other at round eleven. This does not take into account players upgraded due to long term injuries. My apologies if I have got this wrong.

So if we can promote two players and replace any long term injured I can see possibly four players being upgraded, as unfortunately the odds are that a couple of players will most likely be injured during the season. We are all thinking of the more experienced players being promoted but I would love if it was the younger two on the list Verrier and William, as it would mean these kids were showing something. Much better for the future.
