Finally got around to reading The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch. Its a good read kinda Oceans Eleven if it happened in Middle Earth.

Normally after enjoying book one of a series I'm keen to move straight onto the next one but I'm not sure with the Gentleman Bastards series though I'm sure I'll read them at some point.
Like Oceans Eleven Locke Lamora does a bit of replaying a scene from a different angle to show the 'twist'. It works really well in the book and its not overplayed but it'll be interesting to see if the next two books have their own story or if they're just another heist.

Finished the Mistborn series (minus Secret History which I can't find anywhere) and have started on Stormborn. I'm really liking it so far although I was surprised with the length of the books after reading Mistborn.

I haven't read Secret History because I read somewhere that there's some spoilers for the second Mistborn series. Some of his novellas are great though. I particularly liked The Emperor's Soul, the accompanying novella to Elantris.

I've been putting it off for some reason, probably just because of the scope of it and how long it will take me to read, but I've finally taken the plunge into the world of Malazan Book of the Fallen. About 100-odd pages into Gardens of the Moon, and while I have very little clue what's going on, I'm enjoying it so far.

One of the most confusing entries into a series I've ever read, especially for Fantasy, but also currently 'the best series I never finished'. I think I read 7, maybe 8 and much of it is fantastic imo. They weren't finished at the time and they're not the easiest books to read years apart but one I definitely want to go back and read the whole series start to finish.

Yeah, I'm only 130 or so pages in, but I can already see that it would be something very difficult to return to. But yeah, I've seen so many people say that it's such a rewarding, satisfying read. Most of the negative reviews I've seen seem to come from people who stopped after GotM and complained about the lack of explanation, the complexity and the sheer density of, well, everything.

I was the same after I read the Lies of Locke Lamora. I went and read a couple of books after it but didn't want to forget too much of the story so have just started Red Seas Under Red Skies and I'm really enjoying it so far. I feel it has a stronger start to it than the first book.

I read the first and second era Mistborn. Do the second as it is good as well.

I haven't read Elantris yet but it is on my list.

Malazan is amazing but Gardens of the Moon is the worst in the series and the hardest to read. If you get stuck at any point, plough through and you will be rewarded.

Use this guide if you get a bit stuck.

Just finished the first fiction book I have read in years “A gentleman in Moscow”, by Amor Towles.

Not sure why but I have avoided works of fiction over the last number of years, preferring bios or science related subjects.
This one caught my eye as I read the jacket, intriguing I thought (plus it was a New York Times bestseller, which is always something I rate).

Beautiful piece of historical fiction, set in Russia after the revolution.
The lead character is an aristocrat, a count, forced to live under house arrest in the Metropol hotel in Moscow for the rest of his life.
How he deals with this situation and and his ability to find joy and humour in the simplest things is a joy to behold.

Might read more fiction after reading this.
Highly recommended.

i'm about half way through The Wych Elm by Tana French. its not as good as her Dublin Murder Squad stuff but i just love the way she writes and can't help but get dragged in even if the plot itself isn't that fantastic.

i've binged everything she's written and this is the last book...not sure what i'm supposed to do when its finished.
i'm completed addicted to her writing. its not the murder/mystery/detective aspect, that stuff is dime a dozen, but she is a master of mood, relationships and character the likes of which i've never encountered before and i don't know where to go for my fix once i'm done.

Just started A Book of Bones by John Connolly.
Charlie Parker is a ******* great character.
His 2 collections of short stories are good too.
never heard of him before but he looks like a good author to explore.
think i'll give him a go next. it keeps with my current Irish crime fiction theme, plus his surname reminds me of Michael Connelly whose main character Bosch is a big jazz fan and probably would dig Charlie Parker who was a ****ing great saxophonist.

thanks Neese.

Love Bosch too.
I love a great character driven book series, it's like catching up with old friends.

Just finished Boy swallows universe by Trent Dalton.

About a boy with a heroin dealer step dad trying that wants a better life. Has a mute by choice brother who may or may not have some sort of mystical powers.

Was a fantastic read. The first chapter or 2 I wasn't sure but became hooked soon after.

I’m into the first chapter or two as well.
Also finding it difficult to get into, I’m finding it at this stage a mass of words and dense paragraphs.
I have had to reread a few pages already.
I’ll stick it through though, the reviews have been superb.

I had a bit of a drive recently and so did a couple of audiobooks, Robert A Heinlein's Have Spacesuit Will Travel was ok even if it's more for younger readers. The audiobook had different voices for each character which works well, though their decision to have an alien character speak over a theremin got old real quick. It again gave me the urge to try to figure out a slide rule, something I'm prone to when reading 50's sci-fi.

Other than that it was mainly some science texts, popular and otherwise, with Seven Quick Lessons on Physics by Carlo Rovelli the pick of the bunch.

Really feel like reading a good book though struggling to decide on anything, might try something completely different after reading a few science fiction stories lately, or it might be time to finally dust of my copy of Gardens of the Moon and read the Malazan series now that its completed.
