IYO? I think its interesting to think clubs emerge continually with the help of the second-tier players.

If you had to give 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 (Highest is the most underrated) to the players in the AFL who seem to work so hard, as supporters we notice this. EG. Jason Blake. Brad Sewell possibly? Guys who aren't regarded as stars, but important in assuring a win?

Tough question, as it varies from person to person, but what do you think?
Lets see?

5. Roger Hayden - Purely because i understand how important he is to our set up but not many commentators or footy "experts" know this and he goes under the radar alot.
4. Joel Corey - Just goes about his business week after week without much recognition while the "stars" Ablett and Bartel take all the pressure.
3. Sam Fisher - Great Defender without much praise from the wider community in the fact that when you mention the saints "guns" its always Riewoldt, Dal Santo, Ball etc.
2. Bateman - Although most know he is a star i think he is underrated in the fact that without him in the side Hawthorn are atleast a 10% worse side.
1. Nathan Jones - From what i have seen of him he is a fair decent mid and because he is playing for Melbourne, who are currently re-building etc., he doesn't get as much attention off the field as he probably would on it (correct me if i'm wrong) being their #1 mid?

Yeah, fair enough-I'd go

5(votes)-Sammy Gilbert. Because I see him play every week-I really feel like he's in our top 6-8 players. An absoloute gun.
4-Cameron Bruce
3-Brad Sewell
2-Cameron Bruce (even better than credit gives)
1-Simon Presti'

my votes

5- Tyson Edwards (been on his underrated bandwagon for years;))
4- Matthew Boyd
3- Jude Bolton
2- Brad Sewell (starting to become really rated though)
1- Chance Bateman

really i think the hawks have so many underated players because when they win its all about buddy, roughead, rioli, mitchell or hodge but there are players like bateman and sewell who contributed massively to the flag last year

Posted this in the lists board a few days ago. It's sort of a mix of underrated over their career and underrated so far this year.

Top 10 Underrated Players:
1. Tyson Edwards - I think he's been a star for ages doesnt seem to get enough recognition
2. Daniel Bradshaw - Playing with Lynch and now Brown he has never seen the spotlight but he is a powerhouse.
3. Matthew Boyd - In all the AA team threads I don't see his name enough, seriously good this year.
4. Simon Prestigiacomo - Nearly the best 1-on-1 defender in the game.
5. Roger Hayden - When fit he is one of the best small defenders in the game.
6. Bernie Vince - Adelaide are building a good solid young midfield with Vince a key cog.
7. Steven Salopek - A very good player this season who isn't getting the plaudits.
8. Tarkyn Lockyer - Seems to get forgotten in all the Davis, Didak and Thomas euphoria.
9. Warren Tredrea - Best CHF since Carey. Would be thereabouts for top 10 players of the decade imo.
10. Daniel Jackson - With Deledio, Foley, Tuck and Tambling the bigger name draftees, Jackson has stood out this year.

For this thread I'll base it on underrated over their careers:
5. Tyson Edwards
4. Daniel Bradshaw
3. Simon Prestigiacomo
2. Tarkyn Lockyer
1. Warren Tredrea

Never thought I'd say two Collingwood players are underrated.

When I saw the title of this thread, I thought Jobe Watson. But then I thought nah, just like players such as Sewell, Boyd and Corey, he is now starting to get the recognition he deserves, so there is no point mentioning him.

But alas I was wrong. So here is the obvious nomination....

Jobe Watson.

Simon Black - Would be in the top 10 mids of the last 8-10 years. Yet he is often put in the shadow of Buckley, Voss, Hird, Judd, Ablett, etc. In my mind he is just as good as any of them (perhaps not Buckley)

And the kicker, Simon Black. Sure he is rated highly, but nowhere nearly high enough. The bloke is a genuine all-time great imo.

Agreed. Unfortunately for him he never had that alpha personality that a lot of superstars have (at least it seems that way), and so hasn't gotten the attention.

3. Matthew Boyd - In all the AA team threads I don't see his name enough, seriously good this year.

He'd definitely be up there. This year he's gotten more of a mention, but he's been genuinely good for a couple of years now. Very similar player to Scott Burns.

Never thought I'd say two Collingwood players are underrated.

From a Collingwood perspective, I think Lockyer is rated correctly by most. Solid player, but has only really been in our best handful that one year (2007).

Presti, definitely.

Thats because he is in the shadow of all of those players, except maybe Judd.

Dont forget Riccuito and R.Harvey as well. He wasnt much on them either.
