This pearl from Baum, a now exposed 3rd rate journalist, desperately attempting to find a negative slant on Thomas and the Collingwood crowd's response to racial vilification of
Joel Wilkinson.

Thomas' tactic right on the blurry border between gamesmanship and provocation.
You grubby little man.

There are justifiable claims to stamp out this type of pathetic journalism.

The Age editor is less than piss poor letting this crap go to print.

A pox on their houses.

Without wishing to intrude, can I just say that Greg is a man of the highest integrity and a passionate Collingwood supporter. I'm not sure where he is coming from in this article but he certainly deserves the right of reply.

Hmm...

Can't see how going down his line of thinking benefits anyone.

That is the Biggest Piece of Crap I ever read/

We This Crap:

There is another aspect to this incident, less dwelled upon. It was the last quarter, Collingwood was all over Gold Coast and Thomas was rampant. Wilkinson, isolated on him in the Collingwood goal square, was niggling at him, as backmen do. Thomas, by way of retaliation, repeatedly led Wilkinson behind the goal line and into the maw of the Collingwood cheer squad, knowing that the crowd would deal summarily with Wilkinson in a way that he could not. QED.

So he is actually saying he wanted Wilkson to Cop It?

Read it yesterday, seemed a strange line of thinking in an article of weakly related events.

Was all in good fun (except the racist fan of course), Wilkinson pushed Daisy continually in the chest, with the obvious effect of Daisy backtracking. Yes he happily went back almost all the way to the fence and had a little more fun with the goal post.

Stop reading the AGE/SUN it's all a beat up bull$hit story to get you ALL angry over nothing.
No, it's not. It's a well written piece that has a very different take. I don't agree with what he has to say with regards to the Thomas incident, but it's not going to stop me reading his many great pieces for years to come.

I'll play Devils Advocate here a little bit, and just say I know where the writer is going with the comment in question.

Did Thomas drag Wilkinson back to the cheer squad because he knew it would rattle the kid? Probably. But there's no way Daisy could have expected one member to racially abuse the kid, so that's where I do disagree with the comment, but I do get why he has raised it as part of a review of the incident.

Well Most Players do that to get the Crowd Going and Then some Moron Ruined It.

It's the Way it was put made it sound like Daisy knew what would happen

I don't always agree with Baum, but I respect his work as a journalist and more often than not fall for his writing style. Just because I don't agree with him in this instance will not cause me to change my mind that he is a quality sports journalist.
As said above, it's a well written piece going down a path not walked by any other commentator so far.
Anyway, some of the other points in the article were right on the money.

Well Most Players do that to get the Crowd Going ...

Players don't indulge in crowd antics when they're supposed to be playing a game of footy.

Any coach would have their balls for breakfast.

...and Then some Moron Ruined It.

That person crossed the line.

It's the Way it was put made it sound like Daisy knew what would happen

That his man would be harassed? Sure, probably true.

But that his man would be racially vilified? That's a harsh thing to be suggesting of Daisy, particularly given the way things played out.

One thing though, it seems Greg likes to make up words;

Twitterly, they aired grievances about food, hygiene and charmlessness of their workplace.

Twitterly? WTF?

Whether or not he is a good journalist I do not know I do not read his articles But I think he is drawing a long bow with his insinuation that Thomas would have expected a response from that bloke like he received.Unlike others I do not see the point of the article unless it is to do with attacking Thomas which it does very well but unless he can read Thomas,s mind he has absolutely no basis to his insinuation, really poor form from any journalist let alone one who is supposedly a Pies man.

I understand his angle. This is a pretty abstract article that just happens to use sports related examples. The theme could just as easily be applied to the arts or business.

It's up to the reader to determine whether its content is valuable or just "self indulgent mental masturbation".

I didn't enjoy the read as I prefer sports writing to be about the game. There's weak links between the swimming, cricket, soccer, and AFL examples without any clear conclusion. What's his point? Too much grey, where I much prefer my sports content to be "black or white". :)

Firstly he is a big Collingwood man and one of the most respected journalists out there.

Secondly, reading the article, he uses the Thomas/Wilkinson incident as a segue to discuss his real point; athletes playing for crowds etc (didn't find the article that interesting too be honest), he's not defaming Thomas in any way

Jeez this board shoots down any journalist who even mentions Collingwood ;). Yeah most of them have no idea but you've got to respect some for their different opinions..

Not true. The criteria is "mention Collingwood" and "suggest anything less than them winning the 2012 Premiership" ;)

Spot on mate. People here are so damn sensitive. I've found Baum to be one of the best AFL writers out there, and as you mentioned, he is a pies supporter, so he's not just stirring the pot for the sake of it.

Just a question, do people on here like ANY journalists/ commentators? All I hear is that they're all 3rd rate hacks.

Good question.

Most of the current batch batch of prominent writers have written articles I've both liked and disliked...

Except Wilson.:)
