Forgot about the Anchor raising ceremony, maybe cos I never saw it live, was too busy filling my boots with the free pre-game members beers.. Now that I'd like to see them bring back!

love it bring it back, didn't they used to pull/drive the anchor and rock all the way along stirling hwy, or am I embellishing the theatrics. just like family photos from the 80s, no matter how much they make you cringe you need to embrace them and even revisit them ever so often.

People are sticking up for that anchor ceremony? Really? That was shameful. And I don't see how calling that out for what it is is douchey. It's the truth.

What a surprise, you have no respect for something that happened nearly 2 decades ago that you weren't a part of.

It would be cheesy if they did it now but it was the mid nineties when Freo did it.

You were a baby.

Maybe I'm a bit weird but I went to probably nearly all the home games in the 90's and I really liked the Anchor raising before the start of the game... maybe my memory is hazy but I am pretty sure most of the crowd got into it at the time.

Come on people we are talking about the 90's... you know, when MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice were popular :D

I think I'd be genuinely embarrassed to take someone to a Fremantle game, tell them I'm a big fan, and then have that thing roll out.
Wow, it's all about ME ME ME, the shame of it, what will others think !!! Pretty egotistical I would think.

I thought it was silly as well especially looking back from 2013 but you do tend to come across as a bit of a pretentious git at times.

I don't think this is likely. I heard Steve Harris talk about the Dockers many times before he was involved with them and he was always very critical of the way they were marketed and thought the anchor and the pre game stuff was embarrassing

Good old nostalgia. To see the ceremony once again would be pretty rad - it was the 90s and the Club did what it had to do to "be different" - as was the AFL mandate at the time.

So - does anyone know if Freo are banned from using the anchor in a guernsey again??? The more I thought about it I think there was an agreement between the FFC and Levi's (owners of the Dockers brand)...? Can anyone shed any light on this?
I honestly don't know but I'd be surprised if there would be a major issue with using the original jerseys for one off events, I mean they were perfectly legal at the time and as much as we should respect Fremantle's footy history I really hope the club now uses their own past jerseys for the heritage rounds, 20th anniversary etc. We've a history now and my kids will grow up with Freo being the Purple and Chevrons so it'll be cool have them see the original uniforms.

They were doing it up until about 2006ish. Maybe 2003, 2004 at the latest. Even as a kid, it was pretty cringeworthy.

I don't think people stick up for acid wash "oh it was the 80s." Acid was is shit. Always will be. Just like the anchor 'ceremony.' It's era has nothing to do with it.

What a load of tosh, back then when there was probably 20,000 at the game and you had whole rows to yourself, watching Melbourne thrash us in the rain after leading at the 3 qtr break. The anchor was a part of that era, a ******* bleak one looking back.

Nonetheless it was enjoyable watching the wharfies drag it onto the ground.

If it came back now I would cringe, same as you will in 15 years time when you look at some old photos of the way you used to dress.

You pop your collar, don't you ?

I'd love to see them bring back the buff oiled guy who used to pull the anchor out of a rock :)

The anchor ceremony was awesome. As were the drums. As was the bloke who used to run up and down the railway side wing with a bloody huge anchor after each of our goals.

It was all awesome.

Come on Fred, I'm sure you have the cassingle of "Can't Touch This" tucked away somewhere :p

I've got Ice, Ice Baby somewhere on my iTunes. The true classics never die. ;)

Best karaoke performance I've ever heard was when I was hitch-hiking through NZ and this Pommie dude walks into the bar and spat out the whole song from memory while the big Maori bartender beat-boxed the beat for him. Smooth little playa had chicks coming up to him for the rest of the night after that.
