A couple of years ago the AFL decided to extend pre-game ANZAC tributes from just the day April 25th itself to the entire round of fixtures, so that it would include all AFL clubs.
The clubs were in favour. I think at the time, a lot of people were in favour of this move. I myself, thought it seemed like a good idea. But I can tell you that I have now totally changed my mind.
I think it's become a shambles. ANZAC Day is the 25th of April. It is called ANZAC Day, not ANZAC Week. It has been and gone. The wider public has dealt with it and moved on. It's had the media coverage, it's had the parades.
For the AFL to be extending the tributes into the 27th, 28th and 29th of April, it just looks like an utter sham. They're not doing it for the diggers, it's being done for purely selfish reasons. The AFL is trying to cash in on the popularity of ANZAC Day, but they are way overdoing it.
For television viewers who like to watch eight games a round (like I do) having to sit through eight different ANZAC ceremonies before each game is a joke. It's boring and it loses its sense of occassion when it's repeated again and again like this.
I really think it's become a disgrace and I sincerely hope the AFL cans the whole ANZAC round thing and leaves the ceremonial stuff to just the April 25th game itself.
