GEELONG WOLVES (Season 21)
12 wins 4 losses. Finished 1st of 12 teams
1737 points for. 1486 points against. 116.89%
FINALIST : Won Qualifying Final. Won Preliminary Final. Lost Grand Final.

The Gumbies Wolves of Season 21 were the form team from the outset, not dropping a game until the 6th week of that season and only dropping two of their first nine games. Despite the losses their forward line was still solid, scoring above 100 points in each loss. Three weeks later they had added three more wins and had secured a finals berth with 4 rounds remaining.
They coasted in to the finals, and minor premiership, by splitting their remaining four games. This Geelong team was very good at both ends of the ground and their back line and forward lines took turns shining in their finals victories.
In the Grand Final their forward line stood up, scoring 124 points, but their back line crumbled, allowing 143.

This is the highest ranked team from Season 21.

DRAGONS FFC (Season 19)
10 wins 5 losses. Finished 3rd of 12 teams
1611 points for. 1341 points against. 120.13%
:trophy: PREMIER :trophy:

Tying for the best record of Season 19, this Dragons side would have finished the season in 2nd place, if not for penalties.
The 3rd place finish undersold a team that was in the Top 2 for points scored, point allowed and percentage, however finishing 3rd obviously played out well as they converted that in to a premiership.
The Dragons handed out some spankings during the season with half of their victories being by more than 40 points with two more by 30 points, but they found it harder going in the finals:
They lost the qualifying final match by 12 points in a game they led at the 17 minute mark of the 4th quarter.
They won their semi final match by 27 points after overcoming a 16 point half time deficit.
They won their Preliminary Final by 14 points in a see sawing battle.
They won their Grand Final by 15 points after leading by as many as 39 points in the last quarter.

This is the highest ranked team from Season 19.

FIGHTING FURIES (Season 23)
12 wins 5 losses. Finished 1st of 12 teams
1812 points for. 1483 points against. 122.18%
FINALIST : Won Qualifying Final. Won Preliminary Final. Lost Grand Final.

The Furies opened the season in dominant fashion with a 90 point victory.
Those Round 1 indications didn't amount to much as the Furies went on to lose their next three games, only averaging 66 points scored in those games.
Their next 10 games however saw them average 124 points as they scored more than 100 points on eight occasions on their way to a club record 10 game winning streak. During this time they managed to clinch a finals berth with four rounds to go.
Their 10 game win streak ended with a low scoring loss and a win the following week ensured them the minor premiership.
A 10 goal loss in the last round didn't have any negative effect on them as the Furies put together some comfortable wins before their 2nd ranked back line gave up 136 points in a 48 point Grand Final loss.

This is the highest ranked team from Season 23.

#4

SIN CITY SWAMPRATS (Season 20)
13 wins 3 losses. Finished 1st of 12 teams
1744 points for. 1376 points against. 126.74%
FINALIST : Lost Qualifying Final. Won Semi Final. Lost Preliminary Final.

This Swamprats team recorded the best defensive performance of all time, when factoring in points given up in relation to the scores of Season 20. Part of this dominance was allowing 13 scores below the seasons average score of 100, allowing nine scores less than 86 points and seven scores less than 80. Their average losing margin - in their three losses - was just 8 points and they were also that seasons best scoring side too.
Their back line stumbled in their Qualifying final match where they gave up 114 points in a 16 points loss. They tightened up in their semi final win allowing 86 points, and scoring 123 points themselves, which put them in to a prelim final.
In the Preliminary final the Swamprats held a 28 point lead just after halftime while allowing just 32 points to that point. From then on they allowed 11 goals 4 while only scoring 5 goals 4 themselves (including a solitary goal in the last quarter) as they fell to an 8 point loss to end what was a very promising season.

This is the highest ranked team from Season 4.

EAST SIDE HAWKS (Season 9)
14 wins 4 losses. Finished 1st of 10 teams
1837 points for. 1497 points against. 122.71%
FINALIST : Won Semi Final. Lost Grand Final.

The Hawks start to Season 9 was nothing short of dominant. 150 points in Round 1 in a 66 point win, a 64 point win in Round 2, and 111 points scored in a Round 3 win. By Round 5 they were undefeated with a percentage of 153% and were averaging 118 points a game.
Round 6 saw them score a measly 38 points in their first loss of the season, which was also the seasons lowest score of the year.
A second loss followed despite scoring 100 points.
They then tied together a run of 5 wins before falling for a third time in Round 13. That loss was followed by another paltry score of 38! That saw the Hawks sitting at a 10-4 record.
They closed the season out with 4 wins to secure a double chance final, including a last round score of 150 points in an 83 point drubbing of the Bombers.
Their forward line was ready to play in the Semi Final as they scored a 9 goal win on the back of a 124 point score. That score was almost identical to the score they gave up in the Grand Final (123), but this time their forwards couldn't reach those heights as the Bombers avenged their last round embarrassment.

This is the highest ranked team from Season 9.

#2

EAST SIDE HAWKS (Season 12)
12 wins 2 losses. Finished 1st of 8 teams
1544 points for. 1250 points against. 123.52%
:trophy: PREMIER :trophy:

This Hawks side posted the best winning percentage of all time with only the two losses : A 2 point loss in a 102-104 Round 9 match against the Gumbies and a 12 point loss in a 130-142 result in the final round - against the last placed Furies.
They had claimed the minor premiership by the 10th round, of a 14 round season, such was their dominance.
Their forward line was far and away the seasons best scoring side and was ranked as the 2nd best scoring side in league history. Their average score was 16 points more per game than the 2nd best scoring team of Season 12.
Despite their dominance, they had to work hard to win their first finals match, a game they won by 8 points in a tight tussle against the Gumbies.
The week off didn't do the Hawks much good as they found the going hard in the first quarter of the Grand Final, trailing by as much as 23 points before going in to the first break with a 17 point deficit.
From that point onwards it was all Hawks, as they found their regular season form to come out 26 point victors.
Despite one of the better offensive performances, and their seasons win-loss record, they couldn't crack the #1 spot as their back line was outshone by a few other teams that season.

This is the highest ranked team from Season 12.

#1

MOUNT BULLER DEMONS (Season 3)
14 wins 4 losses. Finished 1st of 10 teams
1952 points for. 1501 points against. 130.05%
FINALIST : Won Semi Final. Lost Grand Final.

The number #1 ranked team of all time is the answer to the best team that never won a Sweet F.A. Premiership.
They ranked in the number 1 spot for a number of reasons : The Season 3 minor premiership, one of the best win-loss seasons in Sweet FA history, easily the best scoring team of Season 3 (and the 6th best scoring performance of all time), the best defending team of Season 3 (and the 5th best ranked defensive effort of all time), the best percentage and best points differential per game in Sweet F.A. history.
With that behind them, they came in to their Semi Final with a matchup against the 3rd placed West Coast Magic - a team they split their Home and Away games with. In a game they trailed for most of the match they hit the lead at the 20.79 mark of the 4th quarter and held on for a one point win to progress to the Grand Final with a 118-117 victory.
Two weeks later in the Grand Final they once more faced off against the West Coast Magic. The Demons led for most of the first half, but went in to the final quarter 4 points down, they could not peg that back and lost the game by 10 points, missing a chance to cap off one of the most impressive seasons in Sweet F.A. history.

This is the highest ranked team from Season 3.

This team was the best juggernaut ever assembled in SFA history. Criminal that it isn’t number 1

Going through this it felt a bit strange that the #1 team wasn't a premiership winner and that some premiers were ranked very low on the list, but such is the nature of this game that form, previous results, and the like don't have any bearing on finals matches and the like, throwing up results where a dominant team, like the Season 3 Demons can fall over in the finals and seasons where a team with a break even winning percentage can win the flag. Such is Qooty.

The amount of points they allowed in their respective season prevented them from ranking at #1. They were ranked #4 in their season for points allowed and historically were just average in that area. Apart from that they were awesome everywhere else.

14 points away from a perfect season, I don’t think the defence mattered :p

Subjectively that's certainly hard to disagree with.
In an effort to compare to other seasons - somewhat evenly - I needed to find some common ground, so defensive output compared to the overall season was one of the criteria, where this team ranked low.

This is the highest ranked team for the Alberton/Sin City Swamprats.

Excellent thread, Broken

Lots of research went into it, and you managed to finish, which some of these so-called media performers could learn from :thumbsu:

Appreciate it. Generally I try and finish what I start despite there being a few glaring contradictions, namely the Bears redux.

Also no surprise I was a part of 3 of the 10 most dominant SFA sides ever assembled.

How did you fare okeydoke7 ?
Unfortunately I was surrounded by muppets for most of my career.

Really it’s a miracle that I’ve kicked so many goals with such poor teams. You’ve just been the beneficiary of successful midfields and teammates and delivery.

You’re only 60-70 odd goals in front of me despite me having played out of position for many seasons and despite me playing about 437 less games than you.

Luckily I’m now a good player in a great team. We will prove it to you this week. The Wonders will take their first step towards being the #firsttosix
