I think Melbourne are on to a winner with Neeld. Very good acquisition for that club. I've always been very impressed whenever i've heard Neeld interviewed. Freo with Lyon, Dees with Neeld > change is always interesting and I think both clubs have made good calls and have scope to be competitors over the next few years. If Adelaide get Burns that'd finish the picture.

This is a good point. Anyone have any idea who has been released early? They did it last year with a finals squad of 31 iirc.

I was just going off one of the coaches (MM or assistant??) mentioned during the week that 31 were in the final training squad (we played 33 this year which includes Dick, hence someone else missed out...Young?)

It would be between him and Sinclair. Young is in the more highly contested position as a medium defender. Who knows though. One of those two at a guess.

According to JB live training blog last Friday (CFC website), besides the 22 (from WC match) plus Reid & Thomas, also there was Woods, Keeffe, Buckley, Sinclair, Rounds, McCarthy & Caff. Thats 31 no mention of Young, so maybe he is slightly injured?

I think it's hilarious Ross turned his back on the Saints. The supporters are really hurt and I love it. Hated the arrogance of this club in 2009 and 2010. Even Hawthorn in 08 wasn't as arrogant as the Saints were.

Just a quick look at their board:

As long as Collingfilth get heaps of interstates games, 3 games against Geelong, only 1 game against Gold Coast and GWS and 6 day breaks every week or so, I'll be happy Karma

I heard that Freo offered St.Kilda pick 30 + a player for Ross Lyon, but St.Kilda said "no"...they wanted much more...so Ross walked

Congratulations to Mark Neeld, served us well for four years and will no doubt serve Melbourne well also.

Of course he has to leave, as Malthouse said today, you can't have the Melbourne coach sitting in our coaches box, it's a ludicrous thought, and his mind would probably be millions of miles away anyway. As I said yesterday though, it does suck that we keep losing our best staff during finals campaigns.

Malthouse also said today he wants to fill his position for the next 2 weeks with as little disruption to other areas as possible. To me that means that no other assistants role will change. Either Mick will take control of the midfield himself, or more likely, someone like Lockyer whose primary duties have wound up for the year will step up. He said that as not every player is required from here on, they likewise have some free and available coaches kicking around. I'd say it's Lockyer.

true but it is a back handed compliment. No one chases the coaching staff from non-finalists.
Shows MM's legacy when you consider Laidley, McKenna, Scott and now Neeld as senior coaches who benefited from his mentorship. Not to mention other assistant coaches around the traps like Caracella, Monty Burns.

I think if we thought losing assistants during finals would be a major problem, we'd have prevented clubs talking to our coaches until the season ended.

I am a bit concerned, particularly if Watters goes to the Saints as well.

We'll lose our two senior assistants, but still confident with MM at the helm.
