Great hands on article of The Crew in current OPS Aus issue. Was on the fence but now it is well and truly on my radar.

I'm not a racing fan at all. But I like these open world games with stuff to grind, explore and unlock. The Crew will be kind of like Horizon with MMO and RPG elements I guess to describe it simply. Low level cars to begin with, complete races to earn parts and other stuff to upgrade cars, specs etc. Apparently the game performs well and isn't sterile. Expect to find wildlife and signs of human activity if heading off the beaten track.

Great story of the writer of the article watching two guys online doing doughies and t-boning each other then speeding off to chase down and smash up an ambulance that went screaming past.

Played it at PAX and it felt like there was some input lag on the controller. Got a guaranteed beta code from them too so will try it out and hopefully it's not as bad at home.

Isn't it out in a month? The term 'beta' has become quite bastardised hasn't it :\

When it is a month out from release it's a demo because they aren't changing anything before release at this stage.

But getting invited to a beta sounds more exclusive so gamers eat that shit up.

Just got a code that's meant to be for PS4 but it's 25 characters long, is that for pc or xbox because the ps4 codes should only be 12 characters long shouldn't they?

Had a quick go of it just before, just got past the intro. There's a lot of story for a racing game, don't really care about any of it though.

I think I'm gonna agree with your feel from PAX sacka. While it's not input lag, I think it's just a HUGE dead zone that's been placed on how you handle the cars. Basically it means that unless you're right at each edge of the analogue stick points, you aren't really affecting the cars movement. Which is a real pain in the arse, because other than that, this game is absolutely stellar.

The map is ridiculously huge, it's the whole of the USA and it doesn't seem to miss anything. It has your usual known cities in seemingly great detail, while every other city and important landmark/area in the US is also present in smaller detail. The way you can view everything going on in the world via the map too is a neat little feature, although the navigation of the map could do with being a little smoother. Both the zoom in and out are a little wonky and the cursor movement is a little heavy handed.

As for the racing and events, bar the lack of decent control, it seems to all be really well layed out. I can only really compare it to Burnout Paradise in its design, which is exactly what I wanted to see. There's tons of missions, side missions and pop up missions scattered across the map with a real feel for 'do whatever you want' as a big focus.

But again, I have to comback to the controls/handling of the cars. Initially I thought it may be due to the car you start the game in being a big car, so the handling wasn't going to be great regardless. But then I got given a Dodge Charger and it basically controlled the exact same as the big tank of a car.

So, while I'll still give this beta a bit more of a go to check it out (I really just want to explore this awesome world they've created from the USA), it's very disappointing to see the handling of the cars taken in the direction they have. If they could just tighten it up and basically point it in the direction of Burnout Paradise's handling. This is a game I will play for a very long time. As of right now, this game will probably be a miss from me however.
