I walk into a Borders today and what do I see? Hundreds of books by Dan Brown, all on sale...

Yeah I noticed the same on Monday walking past the bookshop on the way to work.

All stacked and racked out the front in prime view.

I just read The Da Vinci Code a week ago. I thought it started off pretty strong but died halfway. The main characters, Sophie and Langdon were more than a little boring. The story did have some interesting theories, though. The Sunday program did a feature story on the book months ago and they spoke to more than a few religious historians and even a Priest who believed that there was a possibility Jesus and Mary Magdalene were in a marital relationship. They showed alot of Da Vinci's art and some experts discussed the symbolism in it.It was quite interesting.
As somebody already mentioned, it would be surprising if the book wasn't made into a movie.

It is being into a movie, and it will be directed by Ron Howard. http://imdb.com/title/tt0382625/

A severely over rated book. I thought it was quite good early, but then after puzzle after puzzle it started to get on my ****. Had some interesting theories though (most of which are unlikely to be true).
Brown got most of his information from a book that came out about 15 years ago on the holy grail etc.. which basically is a well researched conspiracy theory that goes back through the middle ages with the knights templar as well that priory of sion.

Angels and Demons ain't bad either.
shocking ending, all his books lack an ending

reading the book now and about half way through it. A good read so far, fairly simplistic conspiracy therioes so if people were looking for something to alter their view of religion or anything then they were barking up the wrong tree. Rather easy to read and i'd say its aimed at an audience that likes conspiracy theories.

The actual Da Vinci story and his paintings are far more interesting though.

Well, while I didn't think it was that bad, I tend to agree with your sentiment.

No, it was *that bad*.

Umberto Eco's historical fiction is far, far, superior. But then, he was the best writer of the late 20th century.

Damn striaght - infact, The Da Vinci Code may as well be a moronic kindergartener's version of Foucault's Pendulum.

Neal Stephenson's latest series of historical fiction is also better, but it's still an overblown load of bollocks.

Yeah, but that's kind of the point, isn't it? All science fiction is overblown and bollocksy; everytime i read some SF from the 60's, i get ********ed off that i'm not flying to the moon on weekends and wearing my tin-foil jumpsuit. Stephenson is not writing *historical fiction* - he's writing *science fiction*, set in the past. But its not as good as The Diamond Life or The Cryptonomicon.

Back on topic, The Da Vinci Code is a monstrous load of poorly written, two-dimensional, colour-by-numbers, elephent w@nk.

Any sex scens in the book that might spice the movie up a bit? Won't bother reading or watching it otherwise.

Hold back on reading the book then. Pagan ritual sex scenes should satisfy your lust.

Holy Blood, holy grail.

I'm halfway through it. While it's mildly entertaining, Dan Brown is a wannabe Umberto Eco is what my impression is at the moment. The Name of the Rose - now there's a book.
