What do yous think our draft strategy will be this year?

Our first two picks are 9 and 25.

Given from all reports the top 4 or 5 draft candidates (Deledio, Griffin, Tambling, Franklin, Roughhead) all but pick themselves, I think that unless somehow one of them slips thru to 9 (highly unlikely) we should look at picking one of the top ruckmen available - eg. Deluca, Meesen. Then with 25 look for the best available defender or midfielder maybe?

This would mean:

#9 Ruckman
#25 Defender?
#41 Luke Blackwell (father-son)
#57 C.Chambers (trade)
#73 T.Longmuir (trade)
#89, #105 We may or may not use, it wouldn't surprise me if we picked up someone late, given in the last couple of years we've had some roughies up our sleeve, we probably do again this year, but may elect to use rookie draft instead.

With a crop like this we obviously won't get the immediate impact of last years newcomers but should be in pretty good stead for the long term.

pick 9 is really going to be a tough call I think, because as you said, after the top 4 or 5 players, it really is a lottery.

I'd like to see pick 25 used on Matthew Bate if he is still around.

I'd also like to get Eddie Betts with one of our late picks if he's still around.

We need to get one ruckman with either pick 9 or 25.

Deluca, Woods and Maeson fit the bill and atleast one will be available at pick 9. However, maybe we should draft a midfielder at pick 9 and hope that one of the ruckman last to pick 25.

The problem you have is the Crows desperately need a ruckman as well and they have pick 24.

Wood, DeLuca and Meeson will probably all be gone by then but Maric might be available - except if he was the Crows would probably take him (I'm assuming the Crows take Monfries, Eckerman or Meyer at 8).

I think unless you take a ruckman with pick 9, all the clubs b4 you need a ruckman, and certainly the Crows would take a ruckman with pick 24, leaving you short.

We need a ruckman big time at Carlton, whether we nab one with or pick 9 or pick 25, one of those picks has to be a big bloke. With Blackwell father and son (pick 41) we have a midfielder.

The question is there are 2-3 good big blokes, will they be around at pick 25?? You're gaurenteed to pick a midfielder but good big blokes go early.

i agree with the pick 9 ruckman as deluca is struggling in the ruck.
Pick 25 a defender? wouldn't you rather a strong centre half forward.
Where can blackwell, chambers and longmuir play??

I think Carlton have shown their hand as to the possible drafting of Eddie Betts by picking up Chambers and especially Longmuir. I don't see us picking up any more zippy forward crumbers.

Anyone consider the possibility that Sentanta may play ruck next year. 203 cm and 100+kgs with athleticism and pace to burn not to mention a lot of mongrel in him. Dont be suprised.

Wood is the best out of the three, he has the best tap work of a ruckman his age and has been coached by Shaun Rehn for the past year, further adding to his knowledge. DeLuca hasn't proven anything, and while he has all the tools to 'become' an AFL player, he hasn't shown enough to be picked up at number 9! If I was Shane O'Sullivan, my option would be to draft Wood, followed by Meesan, then DeLuca, but if Carlton opt to take a midfielder with pick 9, Ivan Maric would be a good selection at pick 25!

Best of luck to Carlton in the year 2005, I was fortunate enough to do work experience at the Football Department at Carlton, and I have an enormous amount of respect for Craig, Sharon, Darren and Laurie! So good luck fellas.. And put Luke Livingston at full back, shift Thornton to CHB!

yeah either/or. A CHF, a key defender, all depends who's available at #25. We may just get a midfielder but I dunno, would prefer another key prospect if any on our hitlist are still there.

Blackwell's a midfielder, Chambers is a pacy winger/midfielder and Longmuir's a crumbing forward.
