Bumped him outside at the reunion day and said hello. He was quite shy.One of mine too Ticky. Loved the way he played and seemed such a nice bloke off the field and obviously, from that comment, VERY intelligent!

And Naismith absolutely has the talent and drive to be playing AFL. If only his body let himPAST PLAYERS OVER THE WEEKEND
James Bell and Topy Pink only 11 each for Glenelg
Jesse White 10 and 1 goal for North Adelaide
Ryley Stoddart 22 for Frankston
Sam Naismith 14 and 61 hit outs for Port Melbourne.
Disappointing for Bell 1st up
Naismith will get picked up mid season and that's his goal
He looked pretty mobile last night and rucked for most of the game. One quibble is his lack of marking around the ground- always a bit of a knock on him. Some of his tapwork was great.And Naismith absolutely has the talent and drive to be playing AFL. If only his body let him

Neil Cordy article on Sam Naismith.
Some snippets;
Naismith says he fell out of love for the game, after his sister's death, and the toll of the injuries.
āI havenāt enjoyed the game over the last couple of years. I didnāt go to āBuddyās 1,000ā, I watched it on the couch at home.
āThere were a lot of Swans games I didnāt want to watch at all. I felt like I didnāt want to be around footy anymore.ā
āIāve reconnected with why I played footy to begin with. Iāve found that at Port Melbourne, Iāve had so much fun. I grew up loving the social aspect of footy, being around the playing group and having fun.
āI still want to play at the highest level,ā Naismith told CODE Sports.
āAs much as anything itās a way of thanking those people who have supported me through this journey.ā
JPK on Sam;
āBeing a midfielder when Sam was up and going in the ruck was a special place to be,ā
āHe was dominant. He had amazing hands and a really soft touch. There was a huge amount of upside to him because there were other parts of his game which could develop.
āWhen I played with him, he had the ability to get his hand on the ball first and put it where you wanted as a midfielder. He was gifted athletically as well, he could cover the ground and was quick. He also physically protected his teammates, which is what you want.ā
āHis resilience and positive attitude to life is something to admire. I canāt help but respect his perseverance in not giving up on his dream.ā
(ex ruck coach) Steve Taubert;
āHe is one of the tragic stories of the AFL,ā Taubert said.
āHe was another Max Gawn before the injuries hit. He was mobile and athletic and had a great feel for the ball at stoppages.
āBlokes around him, like Josh Kennedy and Luke Parker, said they had never seen anybody who could deliver the ball on a plate like Sam did.
āIf he doesnāt break down, AFL teams will take a look at him ā including the Swans,ā Taubert said.
āRuckmen are such a valued commodity that he will be considered, but he has to stand up for a year and show clubs he can play. He has to play a full season in the VFL and play well.
āWhen the Swans finished him up it was the right decision. One thing in his favour is his body hasnāt been battered around and if his knees are alright, he has the body of a 24-year-old.ā
FWIW we currently have no spare spots on our list.
Sam turns 31 in July.
