I posted this in the vs Carlton thread. I'd still be going with the 5 forward setup (brackets for the interchangeable mid / smalls) - x is the position:

Vickery x

X King/Edwards/Nahas/Resting Mid King/Edwards/Nahas/Resting Mid x

Riewoldt x

McGuane x

i I I i

Vickery: Roam CHF. The entire arc across between distances of 45-55 metres out from goal. He can kick 50 easy and generally accurate. He can also spot up a kick inside the 50. (Ideally I would like Griffiths to play this role).

Reiwoldt: Roam central 50 from 20 metres to 40 metres out from goal. Do not lead too far into pockets. We all know he is a great mark and kick but you have to remember he is extremely clever at setting up players. He is not our number one assist man for nothing. With Mid / Edwards / King / Nahas all going to be forward at some stage he will no doubt setup some handball goals.

McG: Roam deep pockets, goal square and lead up maximum of 20 metres out. Reasons for this are he is not a great kick at goal, the closer the better. His strengths are also his marking and bringing the ball to ground to Nahas and the small brigade to finish the work.

Whoever are playing small- medium forwards (Nahas /Edwards / King/ Mid) need to lead the opposite direction to the bigger guys to not get in there way - or even just drag their men out to the boundary lines on 50 to create space for the bigger guys to lead into from McGuanes area to the top of Riewoldts area. This also allows them to be in good positions to crumb if a big boy goes up in a pack and get the forward pressure going to lock it in / defend rebounds.

Reiwoldt and Vickerys roles are almost Interchangable.

This sort of setup will stop players leading for the same ball like we have seen sometimes this preseason and I think declutter the F50 creating more space.

Thanks RFC. I accept payment by EFT or cheque ;)

The only thing I saw last night any different to last season, was a fit Vickery and some decent kicking to leads from our mids. The structure hadnt changed.
A strong marking Vickery just makes our forward line work.
McGuane needs to know which packs to crash and which to just hold his man out of the contest for Jack or Vicks to take the mark, which he did perfectly last night.
The three of them seem to work the structure quite well together.
Was that the first game McGuane and Vickery have been in the same forwardline?

Spot on.

Now we have space and options.

The next step is to adapt to defences dropping an extra man back (as Carlton did to us in the last quarter).

There are different approaches to this.

But my preferred one is create a wall across HF from five forwards (including our best long kicks) and play the sixth in the goal square (our quickest tall forward preferrably).

Play Griffiths at CHF 55mtrs out from goal and they can flood as much as they like - He will just kick over their flood then all of a sudden they need to expand their flood to 60mtrs out which will give tyrone & Jack the space they require

The three talls worked well, worked brilliantly!
Vickery was the main threat with Jack subdued so we always had somebody to lead and kick to, and Mcguane crashed the packs, chased, made a contest and generally competed in the air and along the ground like a maniac, and helped himself to 2 goals (should of been 3) while being the match winner.
Then the smalls and resting mids always are going to be zippy and give a contest :)
Only thing that needs work is goal-kicking, 14.22 should have been 19.17 and the contest dead by half time

Was by far the best has operated since 2010, still had the 3 of them competing against each other on occasions but a remarkable improvement .
Massive step in the right direction. The pleasing thing for was we had 3 different options, Vickery was the leading target Jack was the up the ground option and McGuane was the deep get out option.

took us a while to get it right but..... this is exactly what I was saying we were doing.

These entry patterns decrease their chance of direct scores but increase opportunities to set the ground up to limit the opposition from an effective counter-attack.
Richmond's ability to lock the ball in its forward half and build pressure on the opposition has been clearly evident in the back half of the season. Since Round 10 the Tigers have created the third-most forward-50 stoppages of any team and rank fourth in time in forward half.

Which is another reason why jack doesn't lead as much. I still think sometimes you do need a lead up the centre corridor of the 50 even to break it up a tad.

yeah, but as R Hart put it, he lacks a touch of pace to be consistently effective by continuous leading like your typical leading forward IMO.

he could change his style, but would it be effective? I tend to think he is effective now, we just need a bit more leading support from player(s) with pace in the forward line to help JR be even more effective:thumbsu:

Yep that's what do can do when you have the team by the balls.... start increasing the attacking side of the game. Its what the cats do well.

I really feel confident our style stacks up well against the Hawks and the Cats. The Swans is the side the bookies think we cant beat.

The one thing I would like all our fwds to do preseason is a shed load of 30m sprint training.
