True, but some decent contested marking talls would also nullify the press by being able to get out long to a contest.

But if you're good enough to hold onto and distribute the ball then the press doesn't work as ultimately it's 18 on 18.

You can't beat the press by using a game plan which relies on contested marking. It's too unreliable. It works fine as a fall back plan in conjunction with the long kick to the boundary to create a stoppage. That's about it. That isn't breaking the forward press down though. Sure, the press will no longer be in place, but you won't have possession of the ball any more either...

In order to score you need possession of the ball. The easiest way to maintain possession is to create space. Space gives you time, time gives you options and options give defenders problems. That's what you want, the ball in your possession and defenders scrambling to cover what's further up field.

Ball movement is the best way create space and/or break down a zone. Whether that is through run and carry or fast accurate kicking doesn't really matter. In Fremantle's case we can probably apply a bit of both. Though a predominant use of run and carry would make the most sense.

Maintain possession, whilst creating space and the zone will break down.

What if you set up a huddle say 50-60m out from goal?

You then have the kicker playing on as the huddle breaks and then kicking to space that gets occupied by someone in the huddle.

Once that target gets hit, they play on quickly and get the ball to someone else who breaks forward and with quick, precise movement, get a shot at goal and beat the press

That would still be easy to defend. Still setup in the zone and then just cover the player as they run in to the "non existent" space. The huddle relies on the opposing team playing man to man and being in the huddle as well.

If the opposition deploys a zone defence against a huddle there is a big cluster of our players massively out numbering their opponents in the middle of the ground.

We should be able to block for a team mate taking the uncontested mark.

I prefer to watch man on man football, when it's a close game it can be a real arm wrestle such as the Freo/ West Bulldogs game at subi. The atmosphere at the game was great too.

Be that as it may if Lyon's press is more effective and we win more games that way i'll be stoked.
