If the eagles are to develop into a strong side these are a few of the steps we need to take IMO:

1. Dean Cox must develop into a quality ruckman, allowing Gardiner to take up a post as a key forward.
2. We need to recruit another tall backman, my suggestion is Alistair Nicholson from Melbourne.
3. We need to pick up 2 or 3 small running players, who can play in the midfield or in the backline, ala, Daniel CHick and Shane Woewodin (except they don't neccesarily have to be as good)
4. We need to delist some of our crap older players - Wooden, Antoniwicz, Harding, Donnelly (trade), Jones (trade), Merenda (trade). I'm sure for those 3, we could get a resonable trade. Maybe a round 2 or round 3 pick for those 3.
5. Give Cummings 2002 to prove whether he can turn it around, otherwise drop him. If he goes **** next year, that will be 3 ordinary years in a row, and he is becoming a liability. Wilson can play at Full Forward for a couple of years while we try to recruit a full forward.

Thoughts??

1. Not necessarily Cox, but yes, there has to be someone capable of covering for Gardiner. It seems we immediately lose control whenever he moves out of the ruck. And preferably this other person should be capable of playing elsewhere - at the moment, ruckman-only Cox is taking up a space on the bench we can't afford while we are so stretched for players in key spots.

2. Sierakowski, injuries aside, would probably fill this role.

3. We just need midfielders who aren't constantly breaking down. Kemp should retire while he is ahead, his brain must be reverberating around his skull like a pinball. Braun is also a major problem if he is going to re-injure constantly. Thank God for Cousins/Kerr/Taylor.

4. Isn't this a given?

5. I would take Cummings over Wilson a) because he is 2 years younger, and b) simply cos he is a better kick. If we were giving decent delivery to the goal square then Fatty's season would be much better than what we have seen.

Re: Re: The Future

Maybe McDougall can be brought up to play as a tall defender

Wilson was good against StK but hasn't shown a damn thing since then, not a thing. Keep Cummings, and give Merenda another year as well. Flush the others, although Wooden had played well last week he was disappointing last night, and Donnelly has always been a favourite of mine but his time's probably run out

Once again we are faced with the question, give players a second chance or delist them and bring in more rookies.

Personally, i would delist/trade Donnelly, Jones, Wilson, Turnball and Antonovich. Kemp, Roo and McIntosh should all retire. I like Donnelly, Jones and Antonovich, but the eagles are a professional team that doesn't need inconsistent players.

Also, I don't believe getting more 23-27yr olds into the club is the solution. We don't need Woewodin, Gaspar and whoever else has been mentioned. We need to start fresh, forget '92+'94, forget the 10yrs of finals and get the current players to bring on a new era.

Ohh, and Cox isn't a one-dimensional Ruckman. From what i heard he is a very decent forward.

Older players?
Wooden 22, Antonowitz just turned 21 two weeks ago. Jones 21.

We got Merenda(25) for nothing, what makes him tradeable. The injury riddled Donnelly at 28 isn't going to get a trade and I doubt if 24 year old Harding would trade either.

Apart from Donelly these are not older players and I would not put Antonowitz, Jones or Wooden in the Crap basket at such young ages.

What Judge hasn't done with Gardy is to throw him into defence with Ash out injured. He should have tried that because since As has been out opposition midfielders have only needed to bomb akick into our defence to get a goal. We have needed someone to stand tall in defence. I know gardy can't do it all but it should have been tried out.

We already have a young Full Forward playing for East Perth, Dean Buszan. He's on our rookie list as most of you would know, and I have been watching him closely, and if he can play in the AFL like he does in the WAFL then he will be a real assett. He has a good strong mark, with hands the size of Stewart Loewe's, and a pretty good kick. One real good thing he has is he doesn't give up when the opposition has the ball, he gives all he has to chase them down and get the ball back. I reckon we should bring him on the list, since we have 3 out already, and give him a go.

Frodo:

what i meant was crap and older players.

We have to bite the bullet and face reality.
Wooden and Anotonwicz are ****. Jones isn't crap, but i feel we could get something more out of a trade.

I don't agree, Wooden is a 22 year old with 45 games under his belt. He played very well in our last home game and was okay yesterday despite playing in a back pocket which is not his position.
Antonowitz looked pretty good today and is clearly being groomed for FB. We have no other player capable of being groomed for this position. I think we need to let him develop and give him a chance.

Of those that haven't got a game so far this year which I think is:

Antonowicz, Beeck, Buszan, Donnelly, Green, McCarrey, McDougall and Miller.

Of those I can only see Antonowicz, Buszan and McDougall getting potential go's.

Green should also get a run. I was really impressed with his 5 games last year, and if anything he should be given a run to see if it is worth keeping him for next year. Whats the point of him being on the list if he can't even get a run in a team down to 26 fit players at one stage.

All players on our list should get a run this year. Even the rookies.
