The Jesse White Question

I thought your description was more like "The best small forward who should play as a defender!" :p

It was more like "a 196 cm, 105 kilo small forward who is handy but won't be able to carve out a future in this role; however, his size, speed and athleticism may make him a very effective key defender and part-time rebounder".

:p

And why is Grundy automatically back in?

You know he wasn't dropped last night don't you. It was illness that pulled him out

Did you see Carlton expose space in our back line last night. Grundy would only possibly be removed from our team if LRT was back and even than I doubt it. Still matches up well and attacks the ball well even if his kicking off.

Didn't know that actually, the ground's PA is hard to understand at times, and I barely even heard that it was Grundy out.

Carlton used pace though, I actually thought Grundy would be a liability last night which is why I thought he was dropped.

Dogs aren't exactly overflowing with tall forwards either, especially with that bloke, whatshisname, Hall, out on the sideline.

You can't drop somebody before a game if he's been named. Injury is the only reason you can switch a player.

Of course, I'm sure often players aren't actually injured and are just dropped, but the official reason is always injury.

That's what I meant, I mean its pretty easy to just say "Oh yeah he had a stomach bug" instead of just saying he's been dropped.

Reid would have played forward if Grundy had been available I would have thought.

Note on Reid, is his best spot forward or back? Showed plenty of nous as a defender last night as well. A gem.

Definitely a forward. He was pretty good down back, but I think everyone is going a little over the top about how well he did down there. Maybe I had a crap view and couldn't see what he did though ...

But I think that having that defensive nous is really important to develop skills as a forward, so I'm not against him being swapped around a bit as a chance to learn.

I was impressed with how he kept check of his man, and was always in close proximity (I was likewise impressed with Johnson in this capacity too). Has plenty to improve composure wise, but it is a promising sign, especially in a game that is requiring players to be more versatile. I like him up forward too.

I've actually always thought Jesse is a better backman and Reg should play forward. Just hasn't worked out that way, our needs don't always allow for players to play/develop in their prime position (as we're ironically seeing with Jesse now...)

I think Jesse's prime position might be posting up at the bottom of the key.

I'm not sure what we do with him. Since he broke into the side, I've been a big fan of his potential, but he's just not impacting games at all....I'm really not sure now if he's going to be a part of our future.

Jesse needs a teaspoon of concrete powder. Maybe a tablespoon. Needs to HTFU and present himself instead of just trying to use his size to dominate. It's not exactly working for him. He could be a huge asset for us but, as we all know so well, potential means nothing.

Article in the SMH/Age with Longmire talking about the issue of whether to keep him as the 2nd ruck or keep him up forward. Talks about developing him as a tall forward etc. The underlying tone is that Longmire wants him in the side somewhere and is considering keeping Pyke in or bringing Seaby into the 22.

He should be forced to watch Kurt Tippet's game on the weekend.

They need to strap a GPS tracker to him and tell him if he doesn't hit a certain target, he'll be dropped. That's all they need to worry about. Get him leading. I don't understand why he doesn't lead. The coaches must be telling him to do that, right? But if they were, he would have been dropped after the first game because he's clearly not being told what to do.

i think you make an interesting point, we dont actually know what white is asked to do, perhaps he is told not to go past a certain point in terms of leading up the ground trying to keep an opposition backman down there or i dont know why, but when as fans we do have a go at players it can be difficult as we dont know exactly what the role they are being asked to play is.

If white is following instructions though the coaches need to wake up.

This might seem like a stupid suggestion...but surely there'd have to be someone contactable within the Swans who'd have an answer about his lack of leading and who knows maybe the question would get back to jesselenko himself and prove to be a kick up the ass for him turning him into the T1000 terminator of AFL players.

inb4 "like they'd tell us anything about how they want to use their players" its not as if they would be revealing the basis of their game plan by saying "we just want jesse to do X"

you probably have to fill in a bunch of blood brothers paperwork and applications to get into a position to ask a question like that

If a coach was to instruct big Jesse to lead hard at the ball, flat knacker like youre supposed to, and mark it one clean grab in front of your face arms stretched forward like youre taught as a kid, like a leading forward MUST, how do you think he will go?

Mentioned it in another thread. Absolutely ridiculous comments by Longmire along the lines of 'He kicked 2 goals in the first 5 minutes against the Eagles, then we moved him into the ruck and his impact was diminished. Raises the question of whether putting him in the ruck is hampering his development.'

Duhhhh really Horse?

How would I know? I just was agreeing that from the outside we don't always understand the role a player has or the KPIs they tick off to have a good game, if white is ticking boxes for performance there is something wrong but there is a fine line between developing a player and maintaining their confidence and giving them a kick up the rear. Personally I think white has had enough Molly coddling and should go to the 2s

I asked how do you 'think' he would go.. Your answer 'may' be the reason, I dont know either.

(i was guessing that you would say he would knock the incoming ball back to the centre)

I think white probably stuggles with instruction he doesn't appear to have a footy brain and understand where he needs to be so the instruction would prolly make little difference at times. He probably is missing a hall or a Bradshaw beside him teaching him

Hall wasnt that good on the lead with his hands, he was better at protecting the ball and taking on the chest, Bradshaw is though, Reid is too, Im just trying to give a possible answer to why he 'apparently' doesnt lead. (I thought he did)
