Well not much positive that can be taken out of tonight’s game. Here’s the way I saw it:

I was sitting with a mate behind the goals near the cheer squad, and I noticed from the start there weren’t anywhere near as many Melbourne supporters as St. Kilda ones.. From the first “play” of the day it was signs of things to come, and if it hadn’t been from wasteful St. Kilda kicking, we could have lost by much more.

The main problem seemed to be defense, we where getting out marked on almost every occasion, I feel Lamb really struggled for most of the night, Bizzel and Ellis did OK, but nothing to write home about.

The ruck was a weird one, Jeff seemed to be winning a fair share of the taps, but they would go straight to a St. Kilda player or there would be an easy Melbourne turnover. White then played as a loose player in defense, and I feel he saved Lamb a bit by chopping of some passes that would have been taken against Lamb’s opponent.

The forwards didn’t really get much of the ball, I didn’t notice Neitz much, and Robbo was quiet. Bruce did OK but hitting the post from 15 meters out while running into an open goal????

The main new players I noticed where Bizzel, Ellis and Lamb, mainly because the ball was in our back line a heck of allot.

In the positives I thought Chelli played well, and TJ got a fair bit of the ball across half back, although his disposal was a wayward at times.

What can you say about the game… We played poorly, had waste full disposals, gave it away in the middle all too often, and gave away too many free’s inside our 50 (some where questionable)

Sure it’s only pre-season; but the poor performance must be noted, maybe it will give the Dee’s the wakeup they need, or maybe it’s showing of a poor year to come...

Although there where many other things I noticed in the game, I can’t really be bothered writing anymore, so I’ll just stop now :) Lets hope for a better effort next week!!

(BTW – I think this may be my first footy post... lol)

Just to make it clear, I havn't given up on Melbourne's season yet. :D I'll never give up on a season until it is no longer mathematically possible to make the eight, after all it's still pre season :)

I dont know about everyone else, but losing to StKilda(even in the Ansett Cup) by 70pts is just embarrassing. Its even worse when you have a reasonable team on the park and look to be taking the game seriously. You can say its just the Ansett Cup and its not full on, but then where were Jamar, Armstrong, Miller, Molan, rogers and the other rookies? I know we were missing some big names - Nicholson, who wouldve helped in restricting Spider and maybe freed up Ellis/Broady, Schwarta, Powell, Rigoni, Vardy and Ward but we probably had 16 of our best 22 on the field.

Watching Woewodin, Yze, Leoncelli, Nietz, Robertson, Bruce etc getting clearly beaten by players who they are capable of beating is just unacceptable. It looked like they were uninterested.

Personally, I think were rat**** without David Schwarz. He's the only one in the team that can take a game(or even better, an opposition player) by the scruff of the neck and lift the team by showing some leadership. Nietz was hopeless tonight, Robbo was worse and Im starting to question Danihers coaching. Why the hell would you keep Nietz at FF for so long when the ball is hardly ever up there? Why not move him into the middle to get him into the action or even CHB or CHF where he can get into the play?

Travis Johnstone was probably the only positive to come out of the game. He's finally showing something, hopefully he can keep it up. Bizzell was OK, he looked better on the replay than at the ground. Got a reasonable amount of the ball, but dodged a few hard contests that you probably couldnt notice from the replay. Ellis looked good at times and lost other times. Robbins didnt get much of it, when he did he seemed to just lob it up in the air. White looked good. Took some strong marks which is a good sign. Williams, Funcke, McDonald and Godfrey just arent upto it. Tom Marshall was moved down to Full Forward with seconds to go in the last qtr - top move:rolleyes: and to top it off it looks like Febeys torn some muscle in his arm and could miss 3-4 weeks.

What a night! :D

seemed to me (although i didn't watch ALL of it) that St Kilda just played better. had mroe of the ball and used it better.
they put more pressure on and won most one-on-one marks...
you guys jsut had no spark...
wasn't impressed by too many of 'em... and woey's hair

Its not very often when I will crack the sh it at Melbourne after one game but last night was an exception!!
Put aside the fact that we lost, but why did we have to get thrashed?? Why is it that Melbourne automatically just switch off when things are not going their way and let the other teams thrash them!!! It annoys the hell out of me when I'm sitting at CS and I see a bunch of very talented players stand on the ground and do sh it all, let young players get the best of them and generally do nothing!

Lamb was shocking, could have been the fact that our very smart coach decided he should play on Spider first up (cleary a much better player than Lamb), but it could also be the fact that Lamb kept losing him, he didn't go hard enough at the ball... he was taken off the ground after the first quarter and rightfully so.
Ellis did nothing. The guy fraustrated me so much that half way through the match I just started calling him "tan boy" coz it looked to me as if he cared more about his fake tan then his game! . How is it that an experienced player like him can't keep on his player? and why on earth does he not get in there and try and pick up the ball??
For the first half Bizzell was pretty crap as well but he picked up and got better as the game progressed. You gotta give him something for trying but if you ask me, he is much better up forward... you could see that he didn't fit in defence and it might be wise bringing him back to the forward line.
Our accuracy was shocking... Neita kicked 3 behinds yet again, which bags the question if he wants to be a forward so much can he at least work on his accuracy?? And what was that from Brucey? how could he have seriously missed that?? And don't even get me started on Robbo who should not have been playing coz his knee clearly bugged him and he just didn't get into the action.
I'm so sick of Neale Daniher telling us that things will get better and not do anything about it. I respect him and all but seriously when he makes stupid decisions like playing our oldest player instead of one of the rookies than he should blame only himself when his injury list grows!!

Ok now to the positives....
Jeff White was brilliant, he took a few good marks, did very well in the ruck and was generally fantastic all around. Travis Johnstone was brilliant too (his kicking can be a bit off at times), finally he got out there and showed us all why he was the number 1 draft pick. He did a lot of ground work and was almost everywhere. The highlight for me was watching Chelli play well, he generally got almost every ball he went for, he got in there and had a good run. Yze as always was good... but I guess thats not a surprise. Seems like Woey got a bit of his bounce back and Walshy and Brown were also good.
A special mention to Broady who actually got knocked very hard in the back and instead of lying on the ground he got up and went to tackle straight away although he was in a bit of pain. He has guts and I like that about him, he is gonna have a fantastic season.

Well thats all I think... I just hope we get better coz if this is a sign of things to come.... than this will be a very short season! :(

p.s.- what was the deal with the new boy? his first kick in AFL footy was out on the full? :D (WHERE WAS CLARKY!?!?! )

i'm not going to comment in depth but i have to say that i dont' think we played AS BAD as everyone is saying, St Kilda played an awesome game and they deserved the win! i think Johnstone was BOG for us by far and that Neitz was the worst of us! he just didn't seem to do anything at all! and when he did it was bad.

ok we got thrashes, but geez, it was st kilda. come on guys. put in a bit of effort. ok here is my view on it all

Lamb on Everitt. I MEAN SERIOUSLY come on that was a bad thing from the start.

Neitz - should have been benched after the third quarter. he was doing nothing. This is his year to show EVERYONE what he is capable of, and yeah he has a lot of work to do.

Midfield - not enough run. we didnt create space

we turned the ball over way too much,

our set ups didnt have structure

we didnt stick to our game plan (which ties in with the previous point)

and yeah we werent mentally right. and we didnt give the saints the respect they deserved. they just walked all over us.

and yeah dont even get me started on the commentary  God damn Eddie Broady and Walshy look nothing alike, and yeah u could at least corect your mistakes.

ok NOW im going.

It sounds just as bad at the game as it was on TV. It was terrible to watch but at least I had the option of turning it off, which I did. To really make my night as I was channel surfing I came across Jeff Farmer kicking goals, playing to the crowd. It made me sick:mad:

I could not agree more!! The best statement on this web site sincr I can remember!

He would not have made 68 points difference though.

I never said he would, I just agreed with what he said. We would have not fallen down across half forward as much if he was there.

Exactly, without him we miss so much strength and command in the forward line, he should always have been captain instead of Neitz, but no point replacing a 27 year old with a 28 nearing 29 year old with only afew seasons left.

Well thats a bit of a concern. This is most likely his last season and than what? who is gonna take charge and lead the way than? we need to start developing options right now so that come his retierment :(, we are ready!
