I must admit my surprise when hearing that Ross said that we're in the early stages of a 4 year rebuild. Many on here including me, are very happy with the quality of the list and some have even stated its the best list we've ever had! Most see us winning enough games to challenge for top 8.

Sorry Ross but that sounds like an excuse. And as E Shed says, if we are in fact in a rebuild, then play the bloody kids!

The next month will be very interesting. Hopefully we'll see some creative selection and an improvement in effort.

Yes I agree this is a bad thing to be saying. It's almost as if he is saying" don't be surprised if we any have no success for the duration of my coaching contract. It's all part of the grand plan so I shouldn't have much performance judged until then" Good luck with that!

I distinctly remember when he came to the club he said "We are a club in a hurry". At the time that was a concern to me because success usually
doesn't come in a rushed manner. Now we are being told this is going to be a slow process. Fans do not want to hear they are potentially going to be watching shithouse performances for several years. Least of all a Freo fan.

Sydney , Geelong and Hawthorn have managed to have periods of sustained top level performance. This can only be through good management.
Lyon has become coach at 2 clubs that already had good lists - both fleeting with triumph but failing and crashing to earth. Sometimes success by being in the right place at the right time can give an inflated perception of actual ability. He has been in charge for 5 years - if this was the EPL he would have been sacked after last season.

I am sick of hearing all the platitudes he comes out with. They are just used as deflections against pertinent questions.

If this was the EPL Alastair Clarkson would have been sacked after his second season. He was brought in during the 2nd year year of a rebuild and all he did was take the Hawks from bottom 2 to bottom 3. Then in the 3rd year of their rebuild, he failed to make the finals, finishing 11th. Why people insist on deluding themselves that we are not in the 2nd year of a 4 year rebuild is beyond me. A good chunk of our list still remains to be turned over next year (year 3).

So I suppose you think it is a wise move for the club coach to indicate no success for 4 years to the membership base , potential members , to current and potential sponsers? Perhaps you could refer me to the holy book of rebuilds that guarantee success after 4 years to the faithful . Clearly Brisbane could use a copy too.

I believe when posters include perjoratives directed at others and ad hominems in critiques - it is a direct indication emotional rather than a rational decision making process. You know things that indicate or imply character flaws or intellectual deficiencies in people expressing opinions that are counter to their own. Of course this is commonplace of Big Footy - emotions run high

I think it's a wise move for the club coach to indicate that "we aim to play finals, but we also understand we’re transitioning which started last year and we’ll be continuing. We’re aiming high. I said to the players, do any of our meetings and training sessions suggest we’re aiming anything but high and they said no." (10 Feb 2017)

Our membership is strong, so it seems members and prospective members are not put off.

Read the boards of any club other than the reigning premiers and you will find some people unhappy about what their club or coach is doing. Ours us no different.

Not a sponsor of the Dockers - I was a major sponsor of the Western Reds rugby league club before they folded. Trust me, the prospect of a premiership was never on the table, but there are a whole bunch of reasons people sponsor sporting clubs.

If sponsors were only in it for the premierships then about 14 clubs would not have had a sponsor in the last ten years!

This is the year IMO otherwise it'll be a long, long time before we get another shot at it. Our list is as good as the Bullies was last year, we just need some belief, some quality coaching and a heap of luck (like the Bullies had).

I'm actually really surprised this thread has got going this early before we've even played a proper match.

You may not like our recruiting. Fair enough. I think it could be improved but it's far from the worst in the league over recent history.

You may not like our coach/gameplan. That's fair enough as well but IMO our coach has taken three GF sides vastly inferior to their opposition and taken them so close that some say they should've won.

Do I think this pre season match means anything? Not at all. We have a few problems that need fixing - no doubt about that. Two to three years outside the eight should give us the resources needed to set the foundations of new top four/flag window era. We knew that before last weekend. We'll still be continuing with the rebuild even if we finish well above expectations this year. I'm not sure why a glorified scratch match sets off a blaze of negative comments on here, some of which could be correct but many of which are just irrelevant and/or incorrect.
