Guys and gals i am getting sick of other teams supporters slagging off our midfield.Just read through all these other threads, and a lot of peoples (who aren't collingwood supporters) views are that we will end up bottom 4 this year.Well i have news for all the detractors. The reason why the pies didn't recruit midfielders in the superdraft, and went for talls is that we are shaping up our future spine.....Brown,cloke,dawes,reid.These guys will shape the club in years to come.
Our speedy midfield will come from 2004/2005/2006 crop.
Players like cook, stanley, nicholls, thomas, pendelbury, brad d..ck,goldsac,illes,wellingham, heath shaw.Couple these rotations i think the average age for most of these kids is around 18.Now add in Swan, davis,,holland, reece shaw---theres your in and unders with experience and watch what happens if malthouse rotates them evenly so then try and catch us.

Cook, Stanley, Nicholls, D|ck, Goldsack and Wellingham have never played a senior game.
Illes isn't a midfielder.
Davis and Swan will never be full-time midfielders.
Holland is hitting the ugly end of his 20s.
That leaves the Shaws.
One, I wouldnt think can ever be a star midfielder in the AFL.
The other definitely has the potential. - Potential is an ugly word.

We aren't as bad as people are making us out to be, but we aren't as good as alot of people are saying either, Im sick and tired of people naming players who havent even played a game. SETTLE!!

Same goes for the likes who think Stanley should be delisted. RELAX, he is only 18-19 and hasnt even played a single game yet!

I should have added this in but didn't have enough room.Really when you think about it,it only takes 2-3 players taken out of any team,and you can kiss the season good bye.here we go if ;
Freo lost-pav and farmer for the season it's bye bye
collingwood lost-rocca and fraser and clement
tigers lose-richo and nathan brown bye bye
west coast-cousins,judd,kerr
essendon lose Lloyd,hird,lucas
adelaide-richutto,macleod,biglands
stkilda-gehrig,riewoldt,ball,hayes
geelong-ablett,king,ottens
Brisbane-brown,bradshaw
melbourne-bruce,white,Neitz
hawthorn-franklin,hodge,roughhead
carlton-fevola,whitnall,stevens
port adelaide-chad cornes,tredrea,bourgoune bros
Bulldogs-grant,johnson,mcmahon,cross
Kangas-hale,grant,thompson
Sydney-hall,kirk,goodes
So there you go detractors all it takes is only a few players to be missing and anyone can end up down the gurgler......

Stanley-kicks worse than licuria,no thanks.
Goldsack-hawthorn reject.
Iles-Lockyer mark ii.
Davis-7 years on the list still can`t find a spot.
R,Shaw-Mr panic,i got the ball, what do i do.
The rest may have something.

Please explain?

One for the uninformed...we were the highest goalscoring side last year...2345 pts...i wonder what u could attribute that???!!...mmm le tm e see our massive strike power up forward ..cough cough...or how quickly we were able to move the ball when we were on song....give the man a chocolate??? Rocca kicked all our goals last year as a perm forward he kicked 40 odd to midway, about 50 plus for the yr...so ....Taz was useless..or at least Taz...and Dids was brilliant but hardly a marking option. Our tall forwards basically failed and our mids and smaller forwards, however maligned were a benchmarfk of sorts which can only improve this year. Our midfield was extremely effective and our heavy scoring history if continued this year should hold us in good stead.
Rodney Eade stated clearly after we flogged them in Rdn 8or 9 last year that this midfield was the quickest he had played against...surely our pace is underestimated!!!You dont lose pace that quick....

Johnno...Quick/ hard running
Swan...Hard Runner...decptively quick
Holland..Quick
Pendles...quicl
Thomas...quick
Shaw(s)...quick
Lonie...Quick hard runner...
Davis...quick
Dids...knee jury out...but can sell candy as good as anyone..
Medhurst...jury out
Egan..not super quick but can run...

Obree...slow ok
Licca....slow ok...should not be in team for me..
lockyer...Ballerina but nimble..
Burns ...hard but slowish..
Bucks...age shall not weary..

its a fairly complimentary mix....

So a fair mix...now if u throw in some of the unitiated...
Cook will play this year and he is damn quick...
Iles is quick and certainly not in the Lockyer mould...
****...super quick...
Nicholls...hard runner and quick..should be elevated..

We are not slow..what will hurt is us is development and i totally abide to Malthouse theory keep turning them over until they prove they can play....

Please dont bad Stanley.....he will be still has some development to go in him and i dont think he was drafted to speed out of packs i think he was drafted to break them open with his size...lets keep it in perspective...

goldsack trained at hawthorn but anyone could have drafted him so he was an everone reject for that year

Correctemundo about turning them over. IMHO the only drawback with turning them over is that certain players may not get footy week in week out because of the rotation in and out, of course this has to be balanced against them taking chances when they are presented, alah Dale Thomas who stood up to be counted 1st quarter of the 1st game last year. Admittedly (unfortunately) he is probably a once in 5 year player, but still illustrates the point. The team could just recruit sprinters but then they need to be retrofitted with footy brains. It is a fine line, but I generally agree that they could be worse off in the midfield, on song can match it with the fastest but need just a little more depth, which requires the committment to blooding young players. Catch 22. Same with every club.

Boo hoo. We cop the same thing and we've got AA players in ours. The idea is to realise its BigFooty and most of what people talk here is sh*t. :thumbsu:

compared to most teams our midfield is ordinary, no real big names

adel - goodwin, edwards
bris - lappin
carl - stevens
coll -
ess -
freo - bell, j.carr
geel - j.corey, bartel
haw - mitchell, crawf, hodge
kang - harvey, simpson
port - burgoyne
melb - bruce, t.johnstone, mcdonald
rich -
st.kil - ball, dal santo, hayes, harvey
sydney - bolton, goodes, kirk
west coast - judd, cousins, kerr, fletcher
west bull - west, aker

our best claims as top line midfielders would be b.johnson and s.o'bree

dont really compare to the good midfields

and all sides have young blokes who they would rate at the equivalent of h.shaw, swan, pendles, thomas etc. who they hope turn into a-graders

back in 02-03 when we were making the GF we had 3 A-graders buckley, burns and licca.......now we have none IMO

All the finances and greatest resources for our recruiting guru`s and they go for Richard Cole instead of Dal Santo, what a shambles.
Absolute gun`s those recruiters of ours,i suppose when you have the loyal followers such as us year in year out, accountability doesn`t come into the equation.

There is a big difference between being quick and being evasive. Pendlebury can run, but he isn't quick - he is evasive. The same goes for Leon Davis.

If you work your way through the midfield some players have got question marks over their name, and others are past their best. We will have to rely on the same old, such as Burns and Licuria...again, this year, not unless Davis and Shaw/s can step up and fill their shoes - hope for the best, I spose! :thumbsu:

It is silly to think we can make a killer midfield from what we now have. We haven’t had a top notch midfield since 2003 and even then it was working class. The sort of working class that has seen us not win premierships for nearly 5 decades. Since 2003 injury has been one restriction, poor drafting another and poor trading yet another. We have some players that can form the basis but they need to surround some real cream. That is our challenge. Well one of them. The ruck is another and it can impact the midfield. They are our list structure issues and have been for some time.

Stevens is overated and only slightly more productive than Scotland, and if we did have him we wouldn't have Didak:eek:.

I'll rather have O'Bree and H.Shaw than Corey and Bartel.

Crawford mostly plays at half-back, sweeping.

Bell and Harvey are 35!

Fletcher is not a top-line midfielder, he's just got talented mates.

I believe we are about middle of the table.

Just like Mckee ,what did we give up for him! thats right a guy by the name of pavlich.incompetency reigns supreme,at least get a ruckman that can tap to advantage to our midfielders if we are going to pass on the PAV.

Cole was rated just as highly, in fact higher than Dal Santo by most judges. Even St.Kilda picked Xavier Clarke before Dal Santo, WCE picked Sampi, Bulldogs S.Power. Just be thankfull we didn't pick Ashley watson the pick after Dal Santo or Luke Molan at pick 9.

He trained with the club, showed them what he had to offer and they passed.while he was on their rookie list.
he was never on their rookie list, he trained as a bottom age player with a view to going on the rookie list but was passed,so he went back to the under 18's and played some good footy

that's why judkins is no longer running the show. from 2001 draft swan remains from 2002 draft no one remains from 2003 draft heath shaw remains which was a father son we might not have even turned up in those drafts.(stats do not include rookie list players)
