It might just be me but AFL commentary has become terrible. They are trying to push the game to the world, yet what was broadcast yesterday (and every other prime time game) was absolute rubbish. Here are some classics from the first half alone before the real junk started:

Miochek takes a great mark. BT instead bangs on about how good it was that his opponent drove him into the ground after.

"Nick Daicos gives it to Josh Daicos. Both the Daicos' are involved in that play"

The ump says Miochek dropped the ball. The commentators argue that he didn't. Replay shows he clearly did.

I'm sure there are plenty more that I've bleached from my memory. Is it too much to ask that the play by play commentators just call the play, without adding their own club bias, opinions and making it all about themselves? Get excited, hype it up but keep the rot out of it.

Any commentary with BT involved just goes off the rails.

I quite like the style of that bloke who does the VFL commentary - doesn’t carry on like the others.
BT and his crew have leant so far into his own absurdity that he doesn't realise it shits the living daylights out of most watchers.

The first example is embarrassingly bad but I’m not sure the other two worth a mention.

I wish it was commentated dryly like premier league or cricket
There can be a happy medium. Huddo seems to have the balance of hype and professionalism.

I've been watching with the sound off all year except yesterday and a small portion of the previous game.

It's improved my viewing experience significantly. [emoji846]

Winning doesn't hurt either.
I would've done this, but being interstate, I like to experience it as close to the action as possible with the crowd noise.

Bugs me when commentators attempt to keep the game alive…(don’t change this channel).
19 points down & 3 minutes to go…well, another score here & that would probably do it…
Obvious attempts to pump life into a game that is already gone…
If team x can pile on a few quick goals…they may be a chance…

Sadly over the last 20 years, we have quickly diminishing standards in Australian commentary.

Where we used to have professional hosts and commentators supplemented with insightful former player special comments, we now have far too many ex-players, many of whom are simply not up to the job and seem to be included because they represented certain teams (and inherently harbour biases) or to provide unwanted comedy.

Can’t wait for Aussie Football World Cup Commentator to say “All we need to do is progress through to the 2nd round, then win the next 4 matches…we’ll be World Cup Champions !
It‘s bloody easy…

I have the sound turned off for 95% of the game. Brian Taylor is the primary reason for it.

Even within that 5% he found a couple of ways to get under my skin.

Dwayne Russell is simply dim. Luke Darcy is grating. Brian Taylor is a master of self-indulgent nonsense, happy to use the game as a vehicle for his tired obscurities.

But enough people disagree to keep him around.

I liked Peter Booth

Eddie Betts is the current one. Great guy. Great player. Poor commentator. They should at least let them home their craft in the lower leagues or North Melbourne games before sticking them in prime time.

Dunstall embarrassed himself by downplaying Ginnivan's goal of the year contender with his comment "he just danced through 3 insipid tackles" That really sums up Dunstall.
Yesterday Pre game - Dunstall…“It’s time for Weideman to stand up…take ownership of that position…today is his big chance to stake his claim”.
Kingy “Ahh Chief…he’s not playing today”.

That was utterly brilliant because I’d just watched him play at Casey the day prior. Could only laugh at Dunstall.

The worst call was Ling banging on about some supposed infringement he conflated when Crisp kicked the sealer. Literally the biggest and most exciting moment in the match and instead of reading the moment tried to fashion some imaginary free kick and bring the whole mood down.
