Considering the recent talk on old players, this is my team of "nearlys", ones who were on the WC list at some time and never became fully fledged Eagles.

Backs: Begovich Ellis Bartlett
H-Backs: Browning Rance Mifka
Centers: S. King Cormack Caton
H-Forw: Barich Spinks Godden
Forwards: Nichols Bennett Ugle

Ruck: Jackson Peos W.Matera

Int: Downsborough, Mann, Dargie, Kickett

Ellis and Browning were drafted by Todd when they were once on other AFL clubs lists. Both played a handful of games during the dark days under Todd but never really achieved much with the club.

Bartlett tried to sue the clubs for damages after he was sliced from the clubs list at the end of the first season.

Rance was a former club captain who played under Malthouse at Footscray, he was not a great player to watch, but play some admirable games, one being the last round in 1988 against the doggies, and he played against Peter Foster. Rance was a bit of a shy one from hard contests but probably played his best game then.

Begovich, Mifka, King, Caton and Cormack were decent WAFL players who could not get it right at the next level. The latter two were basically drafted under Todd when he was tossing in a Swan districts flavour into the Eagles under his reign. Caton played one game and broke his thumb after a few minutes onto the ground, and Cormack went on the play with Claremont to get back in again. Neither played again. King played the last game of 1987 against the Saints and never played again. Mifka went on to taste Premiership glory back at West perth.

Barich, well, no explanation for that. Should have stayed at Perth.
Spinks and Godden both played a handful of games, Spinks being a bit boofy went on to Geelong and faded while Godden did the same at Fremantle.

Nichols, played for the club twice after the former Richmond player was drafted. Both games only against his old club and never played again. Bennett as we know went onto Melbourne and was sucessful as a forward for them. He now makes a living in the USA at grid iron. Ugle was good for the club as a forward and back, but who can forget the night against the Saints in 1990 when he kicked 6 to help win the game after being thrashed when in the backline. Tragedy did not help his cause.

Jackson was a crab through and through. Another boofy player with 2 left feet. Peos unlucky to leave the club, only to come back after WC won 2 flags and missed out. Would have been a handy player on the bench for both flags. Wally matera was a little unlucky because of his small frame.

The bench are players who are notable. Downsborough I thought was unlucky to be cut, Dargie won a sandover wwith Subiaco while on the WC list, but played one game. Mann did Ok with North after refusing to play for WC and was a captain of the Shockers, while Kickett we all know what he is famous for.....:D

GB - how about a spot on the extended, pre-season, in hot weather, interchange bench for two one game wonders:

Shane Cable (Barry's son, so he had the pedigree, and subsequent coach of the Peel Thunder)

Scott Bennett (in the top 1% of AFL players for aerobic capacity, played one game at Colonial, spoke at the after match and was never heard of again outside of East Fremantle Oval).

Good effort BTW - I think Paul Peos is a real Eagle though (if not a great financial adviser).

Thanks! :)

I feel for Pudu a touch missing out on the feel of a grand final atmosphere with the club both times.

He nearly had a grand final medallion.

I will never forget his game back kicking his first goal again and watching the players congratulate him.

The coffee shop downstairs (which has a few pieces of sporting memorabilia) had Peos' GF (92?) jumper hanging up on the wall at one stage. Apparently he was issued with the jumper but didn't play.

Others that come to mind:

Todd Breman - kicked a ton in the WAFL, sunk without trace in the 1989 Eagles
Brendan Retzlaff - atrocious kick
Dizzy David O'Connell - an early favourite. Remember him kicking the wrong way one day.

On Barich: watched a tape of the 1989 WCE-Footscray game at the WACA last summer. Aside from seeing Malthouse in the enemy camp and Plough Wallace running around as a player, the highlight was Barich getting flattened. Memories.

Think Mann was drafted at the same time as Tony Evans. Glad we kept Barney and not that squib.

Glen Bartlett is now a lawyer and specialises in industrial relations. Nice bloke. Read his case against the Eagles in the WAIRC a couple of years ago. By the way, if you're into Eagles-related court cases, the Hawthorn lawsuit to stop Paul Harding from going to the Eagles is in the Victoria Reports. But I digress.

This thread is great.

I remember a firey young bloke by the name of Cory Young.

Played 1 game against Richmond over there where he wasnt scared to back away from a couple of skirmishes (which is why I remember him ;) ). Anyways the reason he only played that one game because in his infinite wisdom he was fit to interrupt Malthouse during one of his addresses during the break :P

Not bad, but maybe there should be room for Matthew and Travis Burton, Peter Melesso, both the O'Connells and more recently Neil Marshall, Shane Sikora, David Antonowicz, Jaxon Crabb etc etc etc. Maybe there should be spots for Matt Clape and Brendan Krummel. Possibly Laurie Keene should be thrown in due to all his injuries:( although he could have been a champion.

You should only play Troy Ugle if the game can be scheduled at the WACA ground:D .

Tim Watson, on the eagles list in 1992, but never played a game for them due to a knee injury and general having a cry about moving west.

I remember another guy, Damian Hampson I think his name was, played a few games then broke his leg, never saw him again.

Laurie Belotti, thought this guy would be good, just dropped off the face of the earth.

Hampson was quite a good player until his leg injury - I think he was in the side for a while in 94 so would have come close to a Premiership.

Belotti played for West Perth in the WAFL last year, which is not off the face of the Earth.

And, it was Symmons, not Symmonds. 99 games makes you a real Eagle I think.

Matt Connell (who went on to be ok at Adelaide) could qualify as a hack for us.

Matthew Burton seemed to be on our list for a long time in the early 90's but never got a game, I went to Eagles training 3 times in the early 90s and each time he must of signed my autograph book, tragic since I've got Dean Kemp, Roo Matera and Peter Sumich's on the next page.

Other 'What The?' names that have come and passed with the Eagles have been: Shane Porter, Ian Dargie, Steven Davies, Kane Morphett, David Regan, Rhys Croxford, David Muir, Damian Hampson, Travis Burton, Craig Smoker, Jonson Clifton, Luke Trew, Shane Sikora, Paul Whitelaw

Whatshisname = John Gastev

Darren Bewick was nearly an Eagle, allegedly.

I thought Gastev was another unlucky player at WC. I thought he was a very good player for the club and did well with the Bears. I think the Todd era stuffed up the club and we lost some good players.

Frodo, my thoughts on Rance was he played well in the WAFL, but was shy of hard contests and was a bit of a (forgive me ladies) girl.

The captaincy placed upon him was a farce and I think he only played a handful of "good, but not great" games...

I agree with Goldenblue on Rance, the guy was soft as. The thing that irked me about him most was the number of times he chose to punch the ball around CHB when he was the only player in the contest. I dont know if he was told by the coaching staff that as a backman his job was to spoil everytime ,but someone shoulda told the guy when theres no contest you can take the mark.

I'd probably count Peos as a genuine Eagle.

Anyone remember the book "The Magnificent Seven" ?
